Topic: Drinking water Posted: 11 April 2011 at 12:19pm |
How do I get DD to drink water?
After 1 week of solids and only 2 #2s I need to get more water into her, I've tried the sippy cup and the bottle which she will drink from but she screws up her face at the water and tries to spit it out.
She happily drank sugar water to make her go but I can't give her that every day.
How can I ensure she gets enough fluids so she doesn't get constipated?

Jacob was the same, wouldn't have a bar of it, and was quite constipated too. I just made sure I was giving him lots of foods good for preventing constipation (he had pears with everything) and prune juice every so often (which he quite liked). He's starting to drink more water now, I think he just wasn't ready. He seemed to get all the liquid he needed from breastmilk.
Unless she's bottle-fed? I guess then you'd probably need to make sure she has some, but I don't have any suggestions sorry

She's breastfed and yup she's been quite bunged up this week.
A gave her apples with prune juice on the weekend she loves apple, she loves everything I give her.
Did you offer Jacob water at every meal?

Just keep trying the sippy cup or bottle. Perhaps you can put in a squeeze of lemon or lime juice to make it flavoured water. Hmmmm not sure what age you can do that though
If she is BF i wouldnt be to concerned.
There is not much you can do but offer it. Just offer it with every meal.

I would add a few drops of fresh lemon juice (maybe a slice of lemon in the sippy cup) or fresh orange, etc.
As she's so young - with Lily I'd BF her either before or after a 'meal'.
Re the sippy cup - I found I had to trial a few and in the end we went with a straw sippy cup (even though it was '9mo+) and that was the only cup she'd drink water from.
She also didn't drink much water until maybe 7mo.

She likes the sippy cup seems to be ok with it, not its watery contents.
Atm I'm bf before her 'meal'.

Breast milk should be fine if she really isn't tolerating water. As long as you keep trying so she gets used to it!
I would just try and avoid giving her things that are known to cause constipation (e.g. bananas). And remember, frequency alone doesn't indicate constipation. Her system might still be getting used to solids, and I think it only really counts as constipation if the poos are like hard pellets (and babies strain sometimes even when they have soft poos, so that alone isn't a sign either). Two poos in a week is not bad, as long as they're soft. Chloe used to poo like five times a day, but now that she's on solids she goes every couple of days or so.
It's pretty normal, so I wouldn't stress too much about it. Just keep trying with the water.

Just stick with it :) My two hated water until they were around one but I was persistant and now it's all they drink. I found warming the water up a wee bit used to work when they were little. Tricked them into thinking they were getting formula lol. Well until they realised it didn't taste like formula

Yea, I offered it every meal (and sometimes used the syringe to squirt in a little just so that he got some - I didn't do that much, though). Usually he just chucked it everywhere.
On the apples - my Dr actually said they weren't great, because they have a lot of pectin, which can help bung things up. Apparently pears are better (although they should be skinned, because pear skins have a bit of pectin too). YMMV, though, I always imagined apples would be great (given the upset tummies I'd get as a kid from gorging on them!)
Jacob went 18 days with only one teeny poo, and even then although they prescribed him medicine the Dr wasn't too worried or anything.

I peel everything I've made so far. Will see how long it takes before the next one.

I also offered it every meal and left it out when she was on the floor playing etc too.

Stewed apple really bungs them up!! Raw apple does not, found that out hard way. Annoys me that so many baby foods have stewed apple in, pear is much better

That is kinda daft as I was giving her apple with prune juice to get the opposite effect. Would be better if they put the prune juice with pear.

Apples definitely bunged up my DD, so I did prune juice and a little of the soft prunes (stewed prunes in boiled water) mixed with her veges or other fruit just not apple.
Also maybe you could try putting some EBM into the sippy cup for awhile to get her used to drinking its contents, I found the mag mag sippy cup with the soft white spout thing the best to get DD to drink, also if she likes sugary water why not add some of the diluted prune juice from the stewed prunes to the water and slowly reduce it once she starts drinking it.

I agree with everything BeLoved said. I'd go for the prune juice in the water. Dont worry though, she will start liking water soon, its soooo different than her usual milk that she's like What is this mum? lol

Are you doing BLW? THe only issues weve had with constapation is when DD has realised what food is and has been eating too much of it too quickly (for her tummy to handle) I cut back on the solids a bit, upped her milk and she was fine. Gradually increased her solids a bit more slowly.
DD has only started having water recently (within the last month?) but she still goes days with out it

I'm curious, I didn't think breastfed babies needed to have water so young?

It is something they suggest you try if they're constipated, AandCsmum. In saying that, they don't need it, it's just another tool to get things moving through a bit better.

It takes a while for their wee bodies to get used to solids, so they get bunged up quite easily.
Both of mine would happily go 10+ days at times between poos. I'd just up the BFs to keep fluids up.
If I needed to get extra into them I'd feed them still warm water from a previously boiled jug with a syringe.
If she's not grumbly or in obvious pain then I wouldn't be too concerned
