Topic: Jetlag 6 month old Posted: 11 April 2011 at 2:10pm |
I will be travelling to Germany with my then 6 month old baby and the time difference is 10 hours between here and there.
Has anybody got any tips from past experiences on how to deal with jetlag in babies? We will be arriving in Germany very early in the morning. Should I try and keep her awake more on the second leg of the flight then?

Sorry no experience here.......how long you gonna be there for?? I suppose it would depend on your baby and how she copes with being overtired......if your there for a few weeks then the few days to get her to adjust wouldnt be so bad, but if your not there long I wouldnt want to try and adjust her routine much as you will go through all that and then just when shes probably getting into the new routine and getting over the jetlag etc and then its time to go home and turn it all back around........
Good luck cos I dont imagine anything you do will be that easy with a 10hr difference.....I struggle to cope with the one hour that daylight savings issues brings I cant imagine trying to do a 10 adjustment!!

We traelled to the States so was about a 6 hour time difference when DD was about 5 months old. First I say let them sleep on the plane as much as possible - much easier on you! We were lucky though as we had an oer night flight. She didn't sleep well for the first couple of days/nights, but then she got into a nice routine - well as much of a routine as she had at that stage! We just made sure all the other parts of her bedtime routine remained the same - bathtime , feed bed. We had 5am starts pretty much eery morning but we just went with the flow.

We've only done <5hr time differences with our boys but have done it a few times now! I agree with the above - let them sleep as much as possible on the flight, you need to rest when you can to deal with the other end ;) Then, as much as you can, go with the flow when you arrive in terms of feed/nap times but when it's day try not to let your DD go too long between feeds (ie wake her up so she's napping rather than thinking it's night time).
IME the adjustment from West to East is harder so you will hopefully not have too hard a time of it when you're in Germany. Keeping nap/bed time routines familiar is important and try to remember to take anything that your DD can't do without at bedtime - sleeping bag, familiar bedding, comfort items etc.

I agree with Chickielou - if she sleeps on the plane it is much easier for you!
With DS we continued as we would (11 hours dif) according to the new time. So even though he thought it was night time we only put him down for naps because it was day time iykwim, and woke him if he started to sleep too long. It only took him a few days to fully adjust to the new time zone.
btw - DS did not sleep on the way home (DXB to AKL) and I was a wreck!

Des, I didn't need to know that last bit...
But I agree with the rest and will probably do something similar. We land early in the morning so I'm going to try and get straight back into it with the new time.
