Hi all

What are your thoughts on caffeine consumption and TTC?

Do you try and stay away from it or keep it to a minimum?

In particular I drink a lot of diet coke and coke zero. Am I harming my chances further (I'm operating on one fallopian tube, but everything else is OK with me and also with DH)?

I look forward to hearing what you think.

Thanks!

I think its recommended that you limit caffeine intake to less than 200 mg per day. Dont for get that thats all caffeine so including chocolate too

I have my usual morning coffee and if I feel like it another one when I get to work. Sometimes I will have coke if I have nausea thats bothering me.

I recently heard that caffeine can affect your fertility, but I don't know by how much. I normally only have 1 cup of coffee in the morning anyway, but I just switched to a decaf plunger blend that actually tastes quite nice! I don't get my morning wakeup hit the same, but I reckon its worth it, if it does increase my chances of conceiving.

Yep it is best to try limit or cut out caffeine.

Also i would like to add that it would be best to try limit your dietcoke/zero consumption not so much to reduce your caffeine intake but to reduce your intake of the scary aspartame!!!!! <--- so not good for fertility or general health.

Im kinda lucky in a way coz Im allergic to artifical sweetners so they arent in my diet to begin with so super easy to cut out for fertility reasons. Plus I cant drink coffee either since it turns me into what i can only describe as a toddler on a week long sugar and p high! sooo not pretty lol

Yea, on Fertility Associates (strong!) advice, I cut caffeine out altogether. And then I didn't drink it while I was pregnant (figured since I'd stopped, why start again then) and once he was born didn't want to incase the shock to my system kept him awake forever (I had a diet coke the other day, and he didn't even notice. And boy, that tasted good!)

I'm not aware of any reasearch linking aspartame with a decrease in fertility, Jem? Where did you hear that?

I was advised by my naturopath to cut down my coffee consumption to one cup a day plus if I was going to have a cup to make it a decent one, ie no instant stuff.

After being a avid coffee drinker I totally cut it out cold turkey and havent had a cup of coffee for about 6 months now
I do however still have caffeine but wayyyyy less than I did with having numerous cups of coffee everyday
I have one cup of weak tea everyday (sometimes not) and the odd bit of chocolate/glass of coke but not all the time.
I have done it purely to help with my fertility, I also have a blocked tube
Everyday I want a nice cup of coffee but so far I have stuck to my plan

What caffeine level does a regular cup of tea have compared to coffee? I usually have a coffee in the morning and one or two teas during the day. I don't drink coke and have chocolate maybe 3 times a month and just a small piece at that. I might look at cutting down my coffee/tea intake since it sounds like it will help.

I switched to decaf when we started trying as I heard caffeine can affect fertility and also might have a part to play in early miscarriage. But then I read heard that they use so many chemicals to take the caffeine out of coffee that it freaked me out so I stopped that too. Now I drink a coffee substitute called Aromalt. Its fine, all I need is a hot drink in the morning and I'm happy. I had a cup of coffee last week as a treat and holy moly, I felt like I was on drugs! It took all day for it to wear off - hideous. Never again!

I have around two cups of tea and a cup of coffee daily. I've read conflicting things about caffeine and fertility so I just keep it to a minimum (for me anyway) rather than cut it out altogether.

As jem says I wouldn't be going anywhere near aspartame but more for health reasons than fertility ones.

I understood tea has just as much as coffee? Not sure the actual levels.

To be honest I dont think anything in moderation is bad for you. Stopping coffee certinily didn't help with my miscarriage problem. When we first started trying I fell pregnant on our 2nd try and had been drinking at least 2 cups of coffee up until then so clearly didn't affect my fertility. But I feel healthier for not drinking coffee. However, giving up wine is another story! Back to my non drinking self again this month. Sob. I miss wine!

I just did a quick google and this is what one site said

Other data on caffeine:

Cup of coffee        90-150 mg
Instant coffee        60-80 mg
Tea                         30-70 mg
Cola                        30-45 mg
Chocolate bar             30 mg
Stay-awake pill          100 mg
Cold relief tablet        30 mg

a bit variable, but guess it depends on the brand and cup size etc

TTC for 4 1/2 years
IVF #1 - April 2012 short BFP, no frosties
IVF #2 - August 2012, BFP!! 3 frosties!

Right through TTC I have had one cup of coffee, and maybe 2 cups of tea a day + a couple of cups of coke once or twice a week. Now that Im finally pg, Im going to try cut them down as much as possible but not sure what hot drinks Im going to have instead as I don't want to have too much hot choco cos of all the sugar and not a huge fan of herbal teas

TTC is a really hard journey, I believe you can't take all the enjoyment out of life so go what feels right to you!

I used to drink loads of coffee but when I got UTD with DD I went off coffee altogether and stayed away from all types of coke, when she was born I was still off coffee, think it might be the breast feeding? anyway am still BFing and off coffee and had a wee surprise, baby number 2 on the way!!! It might not be related at all but we put in a fair bit of effort to get baby number 1 (and had a mc along the way)and not for baby number 2 so I have been wondering is it because I have been caffeine and alcohol free for so long.....

Ok I might shock some of you here with my bad habits.

Before we concieved DS I was drinking 1-2 bottles of v a day, when I found out I was preg I stopped it completely and drunk other fizz instead, mainly coke zero bad I know. Im not a coffee drinker but hae a milo / hot chocolate most days.

Now that we have been trying to conceive number two for so long I am wondering if I should cut down on my almost daily redbull (switched from v)I go through fazes of drinking lots and then not much so maybe its time to stop altogether.

Hmmm, I am also on the moderation side. I guess I try and apply that to everything, emphasis on try as it doesn't always work with things like wine, chocolate and chips! But most days, I will have a coffee and maybe a cup of tea in the afternoon sometimes. I also drink green tea which has caffeine but I figure (hopefully) its benefits outweigh the caffeine! I also LOVE peppermint tea, and drink that a bit too. I agree that when TTC you still have to live, but aspartame is not good for us anyway, let alone TTC!
