    Posted: 06 April 2011 at 7:50pm
DS3 will be 5 soon (end of May), his birthday is on a Thursday. My plan was for him to start school on the Thursday his b'day. Was taking to a couple of the mums at kindy who looked at me sideways as they are starting there children the week after b'days...it made me wonder if my plan is a good one or not.

DH was going to take off Thursday & Friday & we were going to go to those little things we can't...like going out for lunch, movies, coffee shop, shoping & so on. I am so looking forward to it & it is partly for me so I don't sit home & cry over my baby starting school.

I did not start the other 2 on their B'day. DS1 was in Feb & being my first I started him the following Monday. DS2 is Dec & a week before school finished so I started him the next yr. We have always made a fuss of them on their B'days.

The day before DS3 turns 5 they have school photos so I am taking him in his uniform to have them all done as this is the only yr I will have a pic of all 3 of them together at school. He is off kindy on the Wednesday so I would finish him there on Tuesday.

My options are..
Start school on his birthday...or Monday
Finish kindy on Tuesday...or his birthday (they do a graduation thing)

Not sure what to do..what d you think?

I agree with Bizzy

I have friends that didnt put their kids in the day of their bday and I looked at THEM sideways...lol.....some kids are chomping at the bit to get started and some arent....but the school visits should be enough to get him ready either way I would think

I actually personally think that him starting on a Thursday is a great idea as its soooo draining on the poor wee things when they first start school so he will at least get a two day break after only being there two days....be a nice way to ease him into his first week

I never thought about asking him. He wants to go now, says he does not want to go to kindy any more & wants to go to his big brothers school. One of his best friends at kindy has just started school (different school, most of them are going to a different one) & he misses him & end of term his little girl friend leaves so next term he has a few weeks without his besties before going to school.

I don't have a problem starting him on Thursday but being his birthday I like to fuss over him, lol but 2 days at school is better than 1 & starting on a Friday is a bit pointless.

I think this is best too. It isn't so overwhelming to have two days just getting used to things, then a couple of days rest and back into school properly the next week for a full week.

Start him on his birthday he'll be made a fuss over at school as well cause it's his birthday too. My Daughter started on the first day of the school year, which was the day after her birthday, she was gutted cause she wanted to go on her birthday.

start him on his birthday - 2 days at school will be exhausting enough - much better than a whole week.

I would say on his birthday too for the reason Chikielou said, but if you're the type/your school allows birthday boy can take cupcakes or something to hand out and instantly makes friends with the entire class. But thats not everyones thing.

Hmm DS1 starts school at the start of June and his birthday is also on a Thursday. I've enrolled him to start on the Monday, but reading through some of these posts, it kind of makes sense to start him on his birthday and have his first 'week' at school a short one.

Thanks ladies I am going to stick to my plan & start him on his b'day.

I am thinking of finishing kindy a bit earlier & having a few mummy & him days.

They do get quite tired after a couple of days so that will work well also. He is quite lucky that his classroom opens next term so all will be new to it & his teacher he knows her as she was DS2 new entrance teacher last yr & he loves her. So with his 2 big brothers there I should be able to go out & enjoy myself eh? boo hoo my baby's growing up

Does the school have any preference on it? When DD started school they wanted her on the Monday of the week following her birthday.

Have you asked the school what they prefer. Here is Palmy we have some schools that will only start at the beginning of the term, some beginning of the week and some that will start whenever. See what they say and if they say whenever you want then do what you want and start him on his birthday.

I never thought of asking them I better. I got a letter to say he was accepted & it did not have a start date on it, I don't think. Will ask next time I am in the office.

Hi!

I am a New Entrant teacher and I have most children start either on their birthday or the day after reguardless of what day of the week it is. Plus I agree with the shorter week being easier for them than a full week!

Thanks Flossie

A friend was saying her friend who lives in Oz could not start her son when he was 5yrs as they have only a few intakes a yr so he had to wait to get into school...glad its not the same here.

I have decided to pull him out of kindy early...maybe the end of this term & then I can spend one on one time with him before school
