Topic: TTC and alcohol? Posted: 12 March 2011 at 10:15pm |
Hi everyone. This may seem like a silly question. I'm off the pill now and TTC and my first period has arrived :(. Is it safe to have a drink during this period? I miss my glass of red wine now and then lol. But I wouldn't do it if there is any risk to future baby. What are your thoughts? And I was also wondering if you can ever bleed when you are pregnant ie thinking it's just your period when it's not?
Cheers.

Hey Waikatochic - personally i think you are fine to have your wine, but I don't drink after ovulation during the two week wait.
There are some ladies who do give up totally, but I don't think there is any proof that the odd glass before ovulation does any damage.
There are the odd cases of people getting what they think is AF (period) but are pregnant, however this is highly unlikely if your AF is your normal flow etc.
Good luck for TTC I hope you fall PG really quick :-)
Also if you look further down the TTC pages we are going to be having a Waikato/Bay of Plenty catch up at the end of April if you are keen.

Hi waikatochic - I gave everything up initlaly while we were TTC, but unlike what they tell you in high school you dont always get a BFP straight away - so a couple of months ago I resorted back to my normal habits (I dont drink regularly but like to have a blow out every couple of months)
I did feel a little stink though, we had a part on the 5th, i did a HPT & it was a BFN - so i got trashed..... on the following thurs I got a BFP. Though a friend had that happen with her first & the midwife basically said the firt week it lives off its own sack of goodness... takes nothing from you
Buts all in your preferece and what you feel comfortable doing

I would have a small glass of wine if I really felt like one when I had my period, but not during the TWW. It was a bit of an adjustment initially, especially not drinking when out with friends without arousing suspicion, but to me it just wasn't worth it. It's only a glass of wine! That just doesn't compare to my (potential) baby's future. But that's just me, you'll find your own comfort level.
Actually, I was also worried about what if it's not really a period, so the rare occassions I did have a glass of wine, it wasn't the first day or two - I waited until I was sure it was a normal period. Not that you ever can be, I guess.

At that time of the month I think that if I wanted a drink, I would have one. Personally I've chosen to all but cut out alcohol completely, but then I'm a minimal drinker anyway so it really didn't affect me.
Good luck with whatever decision you make :)

A work mate said to me there's no point putting your life on hold till you have a reason to. I'm with Little_Red...I'll keep having a glass of wine until I know otherwise.
In fact, recently I gave blood and the nurse said to me when you're trying to get pregnant, have a drink or two to relax before doing the funky blue monkey... Probably not the advice she should be giving (and she did say, of course, I do not condone drinking while pregnant) but I'm not a big drinker anyway, so I'll probably keep having a drink until I have a reason not to.
Each to their own, though...

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Im having a glass right this moment and it's quite nice to enjoy my favourite Merlot after 3 months of nothing! I decided I'll probably only drink during my period and a few days after to steer clear of ovulation and possible conception. And then it's just a waiting game! I'm not a heavy drinker, but I do enjoy a glass with a nice meal. And there have been way too many weddings and occasions this summer that I couldn't drink. The non-alcoholic drinks haven't been that great either!!! :)
