Clumsey Baby

So, DS has been crawling for about 4 months now and pulling to stand up for almost as long he's confident etc and we've nver had trouble but lately he's been really clumsey and falls over all the time. He can go from sitting to flat on his back just out of nowhere. He cruises the furniture and when the end of the couch comes he doesn't stop and falls over at the end. He will be crawling along and just trip on his own arms..

I got a bit worried thinking maybe he can't see properly, but he can recognise people from far away when walking towards him

Is he just being a normal clumsey bubba?

My girl was a clumsey wee thing too - until she got her ear problems fixed - her balance was all out.

I'd pay close attention to whether it seems to get better or worse and what conditions seem to aggravate it?

But yeah, can't hurt to have a doctor look at him if you are worried.

Actually, have you had much chance to observe other babies of similar skill level? I used to observe other babies at daycare while I was BF DD, and it became really clear that she was getting left behind by babies she'd been really similar too, and even overtaken by ones that previously hadn't been anywhere near her skill level, and it wasn't for lack of trying, she just couldn't seem to master the balance part.

But that can be a really useful measuring stick for if he's *normal* or not.

Could be ears maybe... but also could just be a growth spurt, that can put out their sense of balance a bit as well.

That does sound a bit odd and would be worth getting checked out by dr in case it is ears. If its enough to worry you then it's probably more than just clumsiness.

I'm probably not much help as my little guy is 6 months old and not mobile yet (other than being a speedy little roller!!), but wondered has your little man always sat like he does in the photo? I ask as we see a paediatric physio and that sitting position is called w-sitting and they generally try to encourage babies/kids to learn not to sit like that. Often little ones with muscle tone issues/abdominal strength issues will sit like that as it is easier than sitting in the conventional manner (with legs out the front)?

DD also loves to sit like that lol

She also has quite flexibility in her legs, and seems to do a semi splits when she wants to get from normal sitting to her tummy quick

Good suggestions to get ears checked. Although I can say, sometimes they're just clumsy.

My boy still falls over constantly. He's got so many scars and is constantly banging himself, falling, stubbing toes. His problem is that he is just too fast and too careless. And he thinks it is hilarious when he face plants.

A friend met him the other day and the conversation went something like this:

Friend: (Sounding perplexed) "How long has he been walking for?"
Me: "About a year and a half! Why?"
Friend: "He's not very good at it, is he?"

I sat like that all through my childhood, and can actually still sit like that now. I was a teeny, tiny little thing and it could well have been from a lack of strength.

Same I can still sit like that too but a couple of people have told me not to because its stretching ligaments too much so possible knee cap could get dislocated. But I don't know if that true or not. Am not or have never been a wee thing though

PF agree you should get T checked esp ears just to be on the safe side. So good it doesn't cost anything to take them to the Dr isn't it.

Cool glad that hes alright. Is he still biting when BF?

M has been biting quite alot the last couple of days his bottle, his sister and my arm, jeans etc. Its like he does it to see what will happen. I say no in a growly voice. Today he looks at me half smiling cos he thinks its a joke then sees my stern face and burst into tears... oh well hes got to learn its not nice to bite.
