Topic: Emergency kits....do you have one? Posted: 23 February 2011 at 8:54am |
I am in the process of putting together a proper kit for our place, we have most of the bits such as torches and candles etc but they are all over the place and as for whether we have spare batteries or not.....slack I know!! Do you have an emergency kit? Where do you keep it stored and what is in it?

Yep, I did ours after the Sept earthquake but will be checking it again today.
It is in one of those plastic storage boxes and it is in the cupboard in the hall (our linen cupboard). We also have a lot of spare food in the kitchen (tins and long life stuff). One thing I made sure to add was a small bag of dog food - have you got that covered Char?
Also when I bought a medical kit I decided to get 2 - one is in the box and the other is in the car as you never know where you will be.

I had one after the sept quake but disasembled it when i moved...a bit confused as to what to include now i have a baby to take care off. Lucky his food his sorted .
I had a set of thermals + change of clothes, a ton of water, water purification tablets, dry ration packs (army issue, i guess not everyone has access to those) and a big key for the gunsafe (living rural at the time rabbits = food) matches in old plastic film cannister to keep them dry, pet food, a leash for said pet, a couple of tarps, first aid kit for car and house, spare charged battery for cellphone (have to keep checking as they do charge down over time). Medication/medical documents if anyone has conditions.
Also had in the same spot in case i had time to grab more a tent, sleeping bags, more bags of clothes.
In the garage a couple of canisters of gas in case i need to make a getaway. Breakdown/mechanical kit in the car too.

the other thing i learnt while going into the house i was staying at in CHCH was have two kits if you have a 2 story house!
we coulnt go into half the house as it had detched and thats where the kit was stored really defeated the purpose of having one.
as myself and DP dont live in chch we left (like ALOT of other people) am so pleased to be home but so sad for those that I had to leave up there

I like that Nzpiper!
We've got ours in the hall cupboard too - spare clothes (which im useless at updating with changing seasons and as DD grows), sleeping bags, torches etc also have sleeping bags. We keep a store cupboard of food but its in our pantry and water in there too. Hadnt thought of pet food though
What kind of water purification tablets do people have? I have no idea where to get them from so have saved water with 2 drops of janola in it (thats how my MIL told me to do it), have bought bottled water for drinking though

Ours are all over the place too so today the plan is to get what bits and pieces I can together plus some sort of storage thing for it all and going to get s separate one for DPs car should he be out and about... Am thinking sleeping bag, torch, batteries, radio, tinned food... Baked beans, spaghetti, soups, maybe crackers?, sleeping bags, nappies for DD but that's tricky because she's growing so quick, what size?! Maybe just old school flats! Spare clothes maybe x3, water bottles, not sure what to use for cooking - can't use electrics if power is off (esp if it's for safety reasons) gotta be careful with matches/gas...
Will have to get more pet food as we got a new dog, and will probably pack our tent near by too (it needs a good clean)...
Feels like packing for going camping...
ETA: Adding in those metal bowls and utensils that Kathmandu sell + tin opener...

You might want to think about hand sanitizing gel and wet wipes to conserve water, we have a crow bar and lump hammer in the middle area of the house in case of collapse. Also any medcations you need, we keep some vials of insulin and glucose tabs in our box enough to last several days in case DH can't cant to his supply.
Plastic bags for rubbish and lining latrine holes if you are worries about contaminating the nearby area over a longterm. We have plans to be self sufficinet for at least 3-5 days, bit academic really as we both have jobs where we would be on call back in the event of a big earth quake but you never know
As an office we also have 5 litres of water and supply of non perishable snacks under our desks
Might be over the top or we are just paranoid poms living in Wellington and have watched every surviving an earthquake programme there is to see

We need to do a proper one & maybe keep it in the sleepout/toy room. Then it is more accessible, if things cave in.
I also need to copy birth certs & passports & other papers so we have copies handy. A pkt of things for the kids like drawing & a couple of toys.
I think it is quite daunting trying to think of what you need, but if you have any camping gear that would be handy also.
DH & I were talking about a plan last night of what to do & where to met up & who goes for the kids, you really don't want to think about it but you have to. Yesterday was a big wake up call.

With water purifying stuff, go to a hunting and fishing store. They have all that kinda stuff and little cookers, water storage containers, camping meals that are compact, those thermal blankets, first aid kits etc and its all good quality stuff.

Oh I forgot to say earlier - make sure you put some cash in it. The banks and ATMs are all closed/off line. It was a real problem for people in September when they were trying to buy water and supplies - no eftpos.

Don't forget to pack the tampons ladies
Also given that we've no immediate family in NZ, I know I'll be keeping my passport at an accessible place too.
Ours it all over the place but will be assembling one this week properly. We do have 30L of water in the garage.

We have one - well a couple, of survival packs. One is in a huge bag that is in the garage for if we need to leave the house i.e. tsunami. The rest is in the hallway cupboard. DH put it together so I have peace of mind that he would think of everything possible needed for an emergency. Need to get some cash though to store away in it.
There are a few websites you can look up to find out what you need for a survival kit. Can't think of the names of them, but civil defence website would have a list at least.

My hubby has a lot of it in the garage or in the house as he is army. But we really needa get on to getting the other bits and pieces and making sure it's all together and easy to find. Thought about a can opener, but didn't think about food for the cats (stink!) and having a med kit in the car as well is a good idea..
Keep tryna convince my family to get something organised coz theyre in the hutt, but they're pretty complacent.

You should also keep a small kit in your car and they even recommend to keep a small kit at your workplace too. i.e some water, torch and some snack foods which might help you get through whilst waiting to be rescued. As yesterdays events have showed so cleary you are not always at home when it hits, I wasn't. We also after Sept split our water across two parts of the house, some in the garage and some in the kitchen in case our supply ended up under rubble in one area. With the water you need to stock pile enough to drink, wash, clean teeth and cook with. Remember also to have enough drinking water for your pets. civil defence has rough guideline amounts for humans and pets per day. We have been stockpiling and have more than a weeks worth, so glad we did it, even though I was pretty sure chch wouldn't have another big one
Also very depressing but have pictures of love ones in your kit, in case you are trying to find them and need to show them to emergency workers, hospitals etc.
