Topic: Booking a Fiji holiday while TTC Posted: 01 February 2011 at 2:30pm |
Hi girls
I am really keen to take off on a mid winter hoilday this year, somewhere nice and hot like Fiji or Rarotonga...maybe Samoa. I'd love to take DH to the South Pacific, he has never been before. Our honeymoon in Nov 09 was tinged with sadness, I had our 1st m/c the week before we went so it would be nice to have a 2nd honeymoon! I'm guessing if we went to a resort the food would be ok? It would be ok to fly that distance? I'd be scared of miscarrying again - imagine going through that in Fiji! But I'm tired of putting my life on hold waiting to fall pregnant - the months are passing us by and its always 'what if' when we go to plan anything. I would feel so gutted if I got to the middle of the year and I was not UTD, I could've gone to some lovely resort in Fiji and drank pina colada's until the sun came up. Instead I'm freezing my butt off in Chch. Haha...
What are your thoughts on this? Would Fiji be ok for a mid winter holiday if I was UTD? Would you go if it was you?

Definitely! We went to Vanuatu last year and booked it knowing I could be UTD when we went. Just as long as you avoided raw fish etc, I love that marinated fish they do, YUM! I've never put my life on hold for TTC, it's better to keep busy and have things to look forward to. Book it, book it!!!!!

Yes I to say do it MrsH... I was thinking the same thing when I booked our cruise last July for this May. I thought, what if I get pg before then, they won't let me on the boat etc etc. We'll May isn't to far away and Im still not UTD so either way I'll be able to go now. If by some miracle I got pg before then I would just have to make the best food decisions I could. Its is a hard decision, but like you say we can't go on putting our lives on hold waiting for our precious wee bundles.

I went to Raro for my honeymoon. We'd been ttc for almost a year at that stage and it was nice to have a week of sleeping in, reading, swimming and eating good food and drinking cocktails. We are now almost at the three year mark, and have suffered two miscarriages and we are in desperate need of a holiday.

Hi mrsh!
Nice to see you, although I wish it was in a due thread!
I think going on a holiday is a wonderful idea. If you're not pregnant it's a great opportunity to enjoy cocktails and late nights, before you have your bundle of joy, and if you are, then it's a great idea to have a babymoon to enjoy time with your dh before baby comes along!
Just take snacks with you that are safe ( Vitawheet crackers/light tuna/raw nuts/baked beans/tinned fruit/cereal... etc) and ask for everything you eat out to be cooked thoroughlyand you'll be completely fine!
As you can see I'm pregnant again, very exciting ! However I'm a bundle of nerves and still somehow feel like I more belong in these threads.
Lots of baby dust hun

Def book your holiday, coz if you aren't UTD by then perhaps the relaxed mood of the holiday will help with that!

I know how you feel Mrs Hopeful - I miscarried on our honeymoon and am too scared to go anywhere!
At the same time, I have been to Rarotonga and I don't think that there would be any increased risk if you make sure you have the right sort of snacks with you - as Princess Bubs said.
Ah just think, clear blue water, warm air and sand between your toes...whether pregnant or TTC it would be bliss!!
Good luck!

Thanks girls!! I am so damn excited about this, I cant wait to get home and tell DH to get the credit card out - we are outta here! Fiji is hardly 3rd world is it, I'm sure I will be fine if I pack some of my own snacks. And if I am not pregnant then fantastic, bring on the pina colada's
I was having 'one of those days' today, now I feel so much better. It will be fun having something to look forward to.
PB!!!! Yes I knew you were UTD again, I did leave a message on one of the threads for you to read.....congrats hun, I'm so stoked for you. I'm reading your updates, I hope all goes well for you.

We had our honeymoon in Fiji and i was 8-10 weeks preg at the time we were there. I wasn't preggy when we booked.
I made sure i didn't eat any ice (didn't know what water it was made with) and only drank bottled water. I made sure i ate hot food only and asked for my steak (only thing i could keep down, lol) well done!

Yes definitely book a holiday, it will be so good for you !! We booked our Europe trip when we were TTC and a month later I fell pg with Jackson. I traveled when I was 20 weeks to London and return at 23 weeks. Everything was fine. I just avoided most things that could make me sick (within reason).

When you have been trying for awhile its so easy to fall into the pattern of putting everything on hold waiting to see if you are pregnant. Its puts even more pressure on I think. Its exciting you decided to book. It will be great to have something to look forward to and just use your common sense when it comes to food.

I went to Thailand for 2 weeks when I was 8 weeks pregnant, it was our honeymoon and after a year of TTC I never thought I would be UTD on my honeymoon. I would consider Thailand to be more risky than Fiji but I was fine and just made sure I avoided ice in any of my drinks, no salad and used bottled water to brush my teeth, i also avoided food from stalls and really only ate in the hotel or decent restaurants. I also avoided watermelon as apparently they inject water into them in some places to make them weigh more???
I think a holiday is a great idea when TTC it can be just what you need. ENJOY!

Yes, do it! Sounds like you could do with a lovely break. And who knows - it may make baby making more fun, and you could come back UTD!

I vote for doing it too!
We are in exactly the same situation been trying for ages and wanted to book a holiday, was a bit nervous about it and thought about putting ttc off - but after talking to Little Red (hi love)! and another friend thought what the hell, you can't plan these things so I just need to go with the flow.
We have booked to go to Thailand and if I get pregnant right now I'll be 28 weeks when we're there - but hey will deal with it if/when it happens!
Do it and let us know when you have booked :)
You never know - the holiday will take your mind off TTC and then bang it will happen!

Thanks Booboo! DH wants to book at the end of this month so I reckon we will do that. I'm thinking Castaway Island in Fiji, looks gorgeous. We will probably go the 1st week in July. Smack bang in the middle of winter, I'll be keen for some sun by then. Did a bit of an ovulation forcast on the internet and worked out that that will be a good week for some sun, sea and .....

MrsH, I went to Fiji when I was 8 weeks pregnant and it was totally fine. I even ate from the buffet but avoided any chicken, meat and seafood. My DH got aq bit of food poisoning on the first night but I'm sure that was from the seafood/chicken. Just make sensible food choices...you'll know what's not good to eat.
It's a bit of a bummer not being able to drink and I had 2 hours nap every day due to the exhaustion and nausea. But to be honest it was the rest that I needed - much better than being at work and wondering how the heck to get through each day!
