We have a wee prem baby who has just reached her term date, who has just started to have what seems to be colic episodes. Always in the evening for about 3 hours, will start crying and you can't console her. She stops for about 10mins and you think you have it sorted, then she starts up again. had a really hard nite last nite, a big colicy episode from 10.30pm right thru to 2am, and both me and DH were so tired from not much sleep the nite before and DH has to work. So I tried to do the whole shift, but I am really ashamed to say I got so frustrated that I couldn't handle the crying by 12.30, i felt like how those people must feel when they want to shake a baby, not that I ever ever ever would, but it is so hard when all you want to do is make her feel better but nothing stops the crying. so DH ended up having to get up and take over. i even tried her on the breast and she made them so sore from beign frantic on them I have only just been able to tolerate 10min bfing before bottles now. Any of you already mums had a colicy baby and any coping tips? I have been crying my eyes out this morning cuz I feel so guilty and helpless and all I want to do is help her, it's so horrible not being able to comfort her... and get some sleep!

Hi CJsays, firstly big

There is nothing worse than a crying baby IMO. Not sure if DS (who is now a year old) had colic as such, but he cried A LOT. Reading your post reminded me of the first night we got him home. He cried pretty much non stop from about 6pm till 1am. In sheer desperation my DH took him for a drive to the north shore and on the way he FINALLY went to sleep (and so did I!)

I think it was a combination of being new to the world, and being overtired. Hindsight is 20/20! :-)

Once you have ruled out all the obvious (wet, cold, hungry etc), I think esp for a prem baby (not that I have experience) you could try recreating the womb as much as possible. Please stop me if you already do this

The 5 s's: shhing, swaddling, swinging, sucking and side/stomach (this one only when they are in your arms)

So we used a swinging hammock that you attached to the doorway (or maybe a bassinet you can jiggle), played white noise (you can download stuff for free on the internet), and swaddled him (I used a woombie, check out: www.comfortkids.co.nz). My DS was never much of a dummy sucker, but hey, it is worth a shot!

Good luck, you are doing a fantastic job

Ohh thx for the fast poists ladies, we'll try anything! We tried white noise, rocking in arms, walkign around, rocking in moses basket. Just got a rockign stand for the moses basket today so will see how that goes, otherwise a hammock might be a good idea! haven't tried the car ride yet, might be next! Abit worried how safe that will be with tired mummy or daddy at the wheel tho? We tried dummy too, sometimes it helps a little, but she usually spits it out after a while then starts up again. quite cute tho - sound slike Lisa Simpson, very noisy sucker!
Interested in wot that colic hold might be hmmm. Plunket aren't visiting me till 24 Feb cuz the NICU homecare team do the visits for now since she's not long been home.
She was born at 29 weeks but only came home 2 weeks ago (after 8 weeks in NICU), she never had one of these episodes in the NICU as far as I know. Makes me wonde rif it is the new environment/a dark quiet environment she is not used to (as lights always on in the NICU)?

I remember looking up baby stuff on you tube and finding a whole bunch of little clips of people with colicky babies and the little tricks they use to help during episode. Might be worth a little look?

DS didn't have colic but I found a combo of white noise, tight swaddling and the hammock were wonderful for him when he was overtired. Or what about in a stroller over a small bump eg between carpet and lino or over a cord.

CJsays. How lovely you have your wee girl home with you now.

I don't have any specific advice to offer you re the colic but I just wanted to say that I absolutely swear by the Natures Sway hammocks, they were the only way I could get my girls to sleep except on me. You can pick them up on TradeMe (Natures Sway also sell seconds on TradeMe).

I had my girls sleeping in the lounge during the day for the first few weeks cos I figured they were so used to the hustle and bustle of the hospital that it would be easier for them, than a quiet bedroom.

I also had a Moby Wrap and used to wear one of my girls in the evenings cos she was very unsettled. Even if she didn't sleep it seemed to keep her happy.

Has the homecare nurse given you any suggestions?

Hi CJsays.
We had a colicky baby too and I have also experienced the feeling of the whole shaking the baby thing.
We used the Weleda colic powder (before feeding her) and we also used alot of gripe water. I am not sure if the gripe water helped as much but she seems to love the taste of it and helped calm her.
I also had a mobywrap which worked sometimes as well.
Do you have a family member or friend who can come and sit with your wee one for an hour so you can have a break? That was the saving of us to have someone watch our baby as we went for a walk and didn't have to listen to her cry.
Our final solution was always to get in the shower with her as the water seemed to help her too.
Good luck

I have a friend who found KidsCalm really good - its a liquid based on chamomile liquid, completely natural. Not entirely sure if its fine with really little ones, but you could Google it to check. You can get it from health stores.

The hammocks are great, I think it was a real help with Tess and her reflux. We always bathed her before bed at night and gave her a massage, which I think helped her settle at night but we still had some horrible nights, and did resort to a couple of late night drives.
If it might be wind etc some rhugar might be worth a try, a nature remedy.
Hang in there it will get better!

My friend had a terribly colicky baby, though she had tried everything then discovered Rhuger drops, she swears the change in her was amazing. Could be worth a try? Rhuger drops

wow just checked out the link those drops sound great! last nite the bath worked again, so that's 2 nites in a row yay! WIll see how we go with that again, if no joy then I think those drops could very well be the answer. interesting on the site it says re premature babies and their guts not being properly mature, that could very well be the case for our wee one.
Thx so much! it really is tough when they happen! abit scared for when the first time is she gets sick too, cuz I imagine will be the same sort of crying not being able to settle. Oh the hard parts of being a mum (after all the really really great parts!)

Firstly hugs honey. I too had a premmie with colic, its so exhausting. Poor poppit and poor Mama x. It really is a lot of trial and error to see what works for you, but these are some of the things that worked for us.

Gripe water, infacol drops (but you can't use those til 4wks old), lactose reducing drops (you can get them at the pharmacy) - lactose made my boy really windy. Lots and lots of winding (baby whisperer suggests 10-15 times per feed!), elevating the bassinet so that baby's head is higher, tummy massage, deep warm baths (I used to put my wee boy in with his daddy), leg pumping (like pretending they are riding a bicycle?,and froggy legs). When I was breastfeeding almost everything made him windy, dairy, eggs, onions, garlic, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, tomatoes, corn, fizzy, acidic foods, oats. But when my supply ran out we went to S26 Lactose free, OMG, huge difference!

I hope you find something to help you soon hun. x

Hugs!!! Where abouts in nz are you? Dont feel bad for not feeling like you couldnt cope any parent with a colic baby understands and you have had the added stress of prem too.
Emily had terrible colic and reflux and spent alot of her time screaming we were also like you open to trying anything! we used to drive around with her at god knows what time then sleep in the car so we didnt wake her - it dose get easier though!
Rugher is a good idea, we brought a baby swing was good for giving your arms a rest, tilting the bed end up (more for the reflux but just incase), take any help you can get even if its just 10 min for a shower you will be amazed at how much that can help, would reccomend looking at the different holds there are a couple that were good. are her bowels ok? we found Emily would sometime need some help. we also had some other recomendations from the paedatrician like starting a tiny bit of baby rice quite early but i would deff talk to dr before doing that.

Hey all, well it seems just a nite time bath is all she needs, we've had 4 good nights in a row with a regular 8.30pm bath! sooo happy! but we will definitely keep these recommendations in mind in case we have another session... which hopefully they are all behind us now. i have heard some babies only get for days, some for months, so hopefully it was just days for us!
We live in Wgtn... and yip her bowels are fine, plenty of movements, no worries there hehe :)
