Topic: Carsick Help! Posted: 30 January 2011 at 6:37am |
omg its been a while, how is everyone!
okay, so I dont have time to search the whole site for anything else relating to this - I dont have much credit on my vodem.
We're on holiday in Wanaka at the moment and my car is currently FULL of puke in the back thanks to Thomas vomiting most of the way. What the hell do I do?!!?! Gingernuts didnt work, and we didnt have anything else.
Is there anything I can get from the chemist / supermarket thats safe for him to take? He's 2.5.

Peppermint is great when you're feeling nauseas. You could try some peppermint oil on a tissue tucked in his top or something.
Rescue remedy?

I know you really don't want to hear it - sorry!! - but my cousins were frightfully carsick growing up. My Auntie tried EVERYTHING to no avail, but got very good at pulling over in time. I hope that's not the case for you (but in case nothing works, thought you might at least like to know that you're not the only one )
Now he's older, one of my cousins finds those magnetic bands very helpful, they pretty much get rid of the problem (he's an ambulance officer, not a good place to get carsick). Worth a shot?

My oldest used to get carsick just on long trips so we started giving her phenergan the dose for tatavel sickness is 5ml for a 2yr old, you take it the night before you travel and then again6-8 hrs on the trip if needed,
The other thing we tried were the sea sick wrist bands.

Fresh air blowing onto the face works well too. Was the only thing that really helped me when I was younger. Annoying I know

I hope that helps, I didn't know you could use it for that but when I went to the chemist for help over what I could give her that is what they recommended.

Hey as an experienced car sick kid (and adult for that matter) I can tell you all the tricks.
Personally the bands never worked for me. As a kid I was on the sea legs pills, but I was always on a higher dose so after a while I think I got immune. But they worked really.
Ginger beer (pref flat) works really well but they need to drink it quite regularly. Ginger anything is great but you need to eat it every 1/2 hour or so.
As an adult I swear by the blackmores ginger tablets. You have to take them religously so many per hour (or whatever it says on the box) but I have been in 5m swells and not been sick. I usually get sick just waiting for the ferry to undock!!
Books reading is bad, but I've heard a DVD player is better as it forces the kids to look straight ahead.
BUT the best fix (and DH hates this) is the driver, they need to not drive so the kids get sick. I can make myself sick if I drive the wrong way!! DH is finally coming round to this, once me DS and the dog all threw up on the same stretch of road!!! Good luck

Oh no! :(
I would try the sea bands and also what floss said!
Also, I would wrap a big sheet round him(and take several with you!) and over the car seat and to the floor that way it will go on that and you can just stuff it in the bag and tie it up till you can deal with it,

I was so car sick as a kid and as an adult I have realised that most of my problems stem from my dads driving! I am mostly fine but if I go somewhere with my dad, watch out. So as HuMum said try driving a little slower.
My DS occasionally gets car sick (the crown range is particularly bad) and prefers so throw up into an old towel. It's pretty gross but it seems to contain things. Make sure that if you try this you also bring plastic bags to tie them up in too.

I get car sick and my 3 y/o used to too. I lined under thier seats with old towels and a rubbish bag under that so it didn't get through the seat cos once it does its very hard to get rid of the smell, also had one on the floor in front of her and sort of tied one round her like a bib as well. In the boot I carried a bucket, some empty 2l containers with disinfectant water, rags and some oust fabric spray as well as wet facecloths in bags and nappy wipes and towels. Also some old plastic bags and a rubbish bag to carry them home in (I hate the smell it makes me feel even sicker so go overborad to avoid it).
I don't feed her immediately before a trip but find if she has a good breakfast at LEAST an hour before going it stays put. No yoghurt or milk to drink either. She has cold water in a bottle and I try to encourage her to have a sleep. She is now big enough and uses and icecream container so no need for all the towels etc, but I still prepare with my sick kit in the back.
For myself I prefer to drive, but husband not keen so on long trips when I feel dodgy I turn air con up full blast on my face and concentrate on singing to take my mind off it, I find closing my eyes and listening to my ipod concentrating hard on music helps heaps, although it is very antisocial, lol.

ChCh to Wanaka is killer trip as is wanaka to queenstown.
My 3 year odl gets really sick and I swear by Naturopharm Travel spray. It works brilliantly and we have used it for at least a year now with no sickness. I started using it on our 1 year old this year as he was grizzling round the hills and it appeared to stop him grizzling.

ok we have just mastered the car sick thing but not sure if it will work for one so young. We travel with a kids beach bucket lined with a plastic bag. But since we started this trick we haven't had to use it.
Get them to hold a lemon and focus on it. Not sure why but it honestly works. They hold the lemon the whole way and on the windy bits we make them focus on it. My son has thrown up everytime going thru the karagahake gourge and the L n P bottle at Paeroa has seen more of his vomit that it really should. We live on one side and my sister on the other so it is a frequent trip. Since the lemon trick we haven't had one spew.
Hope this helps.

When we discovered Rhylz got carsick (on a longtrip like yourself) we got phenagen - it worked well! he felt a bit yuck but didn't vomit on the way home. we discussed seabands but as they have to stay in the same area it was no good for his age (he was arround 2 years)
We are going on a cruise this year so should be very interesting.... will be taking alot of phenagen and sickness tablets just incase!

im ridiculously carsick. when i was pregnant the sea bands helped. but not anymore. the sealegs pills were useless. ginger beer/ginger anything is useless. i have to stare STRAIGHT ahead with the window down. (if its raining i have the a/c on full blast on my face)
the only way im ever not carsick is if im driving.
ever seen someone ACTUALLY green with sickness? yeah thats me....
i have the blackmores ginger tablets that i will try - but im useless at swallowing pills so may need to do the sly chew and chase it with a half bottle of juice lol.
oh and eating helps - coz you are constantly swallowing it down. and also the fuller you are the easier it is to deal with.
no idea about kids though sorry! ive heard of rescue remedy - might try it myself.
good luck!

My son and husband who gets carsick didn't feel sick once on our cruise and we were sandwiched between hurrican gustav on the right of us and a tropical depression on the left. (one level short of hurricane status) We had to spend two extra days at sea due to the hurricane closing the port. So coming in it was rough and they were still fine.
ETA this was in the gulf of mexico so not sure about local waters and level of roughness.
