I'm sure a lot of people have this problem - it's drivnig me nuts.

I've just realised that DS' toys have taken over the house and there is no spare space anywhere. I've actually stored a lot of his toys away since xmas, but they still seem to be taking over. We have a average sized 3 bedroom house with 1 living area and at the moment his stuff is taking up 2 of the bedrooms and the living room. We have our second baby due in 6 mths and I'm really worried about having even more stuff. We are seriously looking at moving to a bigger house, but of course that comes with a bigger price, which we can't really afford.

In the short term and incase we don't end up moving does anyone have any tips on managing the toys aka clutter! At the moment I feel like chucking the whole lot in the bin!

Get rid of some? Do the thing with three seperate boxes of toys and rotate instead of having a buttload avaliable all the time? Pends on how old he is i guess. If he's old enough give him a box and ask him to put his least favourite toys in it and you can donate them or something so he can chose what goes and learns some...giving spirit? at the same time?

Sez, I am having almost exactly the same dilemma! Baby due in 10weeks, 3brm, one living area, toys galore! and DH clutter
I have packed all the toys up in plastic storage boxes and just chucked them in a tall tower in DS's room, I packed them in age appropriate boxes, so when the baby comes, I'll get the baby box out, and then in a few months i'll get the older box out.

Now I have the problem of getting all the husbands clutter out of the 3rd bedroom! I have got some cardboard boxes, and he has til the end of Monday to sort it out, otherwise I am going to pack it up and put it in a big tower in the lounge. haha

DH is actually going to buy a garden shed this weekend (I'm not holding my breath) and going to store a whole lot of boxes out there. He has been going to buy a shed for the last 20 weekends! But I still love him

We have large boxes that go under the bed in one bedroom for some toys, and a toy barrel in the lounge for a selected few toys, plus a bookshelf in the kids room and lounge. We stopped buying toys for the kids as they tend to get enough from friends/family for xmas/birthday, and now that I'm 'de-cluttering' again to make room for new baby in 3rd bedroom, I'm amazed at how little they have, compared to when it was just DS and me I would suggest putting toys he rarely plays with in a box and store in garage if possible, and bring a couple of toys out from that box on rainy days, or when you are busy with new baby, he'll think its a new toy all over again!

no advise really I have 4 children worth of toys so its toys galore - I have however been very ruthless in the past and gotten rid of (or given away) toys.

I have just brought a shelve that has 3 boxes in it (second hand off trademe) for DS 4yr room - his room is the littlest in the house (4 bedrm house) and he doesn't have alot of room even though he has lots of toys (some his - some hand me downs)

Toys don't bother me as much as paper clutter and pencils/pens etc... and bits n bobs. My Dh keeps telling me to get rid of them but you always need paper and pens!

I also love photos and being a budding photogrpher I have lots of photos I love to show off - solved that with a digital photoframe

Still have alot of photo albums but gettingsomething to store them in.

I am on mission DECLUTTER - so any tips people have I would be interested... theres 6 people in this house so alot to sort through!

good luck poster 1 with your decluttering too

Have you thought about getting rid of some of the younger aged toys. I know DD had some toys for her 1st birthday that ive put away because she has outgrown them

Or just put them into storage. Does he really play with them all maybe you need to sort through toys that arent getting played with and just keep the ones he uses

Also what are you using for toy storage????

I have those cheapy shelves from the warehouse. I got 3 2 shelf ones for $26 i think. I then screwed them together and put in containers in the cubes to hold the toys. It actually holds alot of toys.

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for all the helpful tips. DS is 19 months and for storage we have a couple of book cases and 4 large toy chests (scattered around the house). I do like the idea of having some plastic drawers from warehouse in the cupboard and about storage under the bed. A lot of the toys have been given to him so I struggle taking any away but this is ridiculous. We have a large garage so a lot of this stuff will have to go down there. AND don't even get me started on my DH he has just as many toys! I'm sure I don't have anything of mine in this house. Quite frankly I would love a 4 bedroom house with 2 living areas. I'll keep pushing DH on this idea.

Toy rotation works really well we used to do that with DS. As he has got older he plays a bit differently. He will now get out trains or cars or lego etc and he know that only one thing can be in the lounge at a time.

However we have another one due in a couple of months so I'm preparing myself for more clutter again.

Oh and every now and when DS isn't home I cull the toy box. I only get rid of the things that are broken or hardly played with. He has NEVER noticed

Inside the house we have two cane toy boxes and a toy table. DD also has a large outdoor playhouse and this has outdoor toys in it. If there are too many toys to fit in these areas then it is time for a cull. DD and I go through her toys about once every six months and choose toys to be gifted to children in need.

Be brutal. Generally we all only use a portion of our stuff regularly, and the rest is just using space - clothes, shoes, toys, linen ... all sorts! I'm really brutal - I can't stand tripping over things and not being able to find stuff. Cuinn has one toy box that I don't let overflow and one drawer under his bed for soft toys. That's it. Oh, and a standard sized bucket of lego. He looks in the drawer under his bed about once a month, and otherwise, just faffs around in his toy box or outside. He's got a bit of stuff outside - a kids wheelbarrow, a climbing frame, a rocking thing, but I'm of the opinion that the house is our house too and I like to be able to have my space as well.

I say be absolutely brutal. Watch him for a few days or a week, see what he's playing with and what he's not and just box stuff up and store it. Same goes with your own stuff - clothes you hardly wear, linen you don't use (we have 3 sets of sheets (for summer and winter, so 6 in total) for example - 2 we rotate on our bed and one on the guest bed) and just pretty much everything - it'll help you create space in cupboards and in your own areas as well and hopefully that'll help! You'll have to be brutal though!

I do rotations but also we have collected so much over the years and heaps of it isn't even of interest to the kids. Over these holidays we gave away a whole heap to the local budget advice/food bank and I intend to go back soon. Same with clothes...

He absolutely doesn't need all these toys, that's why I've asked for helpful tips on how to manage this chaos and get rid of some of it.

We hardly buy him anything and I'm forever telling family and friends that he doesn't need anymore toys, but it just keeps on coming. I'm going to have to be brutal :-) That's my mission for this week and forever!

With 3 boys we have way too much stuff & I notice they turn lots of toys into weapons, items we have spent $$ on are no longer a phone or cash registers they are weapons of mass destruction.

I have sold good ones on TM & donated or given away others.

DS2&3 are mad on stuffed toys which drives me nuts as there are so many of them, I am trying to put them away so they will forget about the ones that have no meaning....lost cause at the moment..

Send out an email to people who usually buy toys & say you are trying to build up an account for him & instead of presents of toys which he has way too many of, it would be really great if they could contribute to that instead...you could say you are using it as bike fund or a pre-school activity, swimming lessons etc.

Storage ideas, if you can fit bins under beds or stack them in a wardrobe then they are out of sight. We have shelves in the laundry where I keep a few toys & the art box, the kids can reach them & know to put them back there. I have 2 sets of 3 blue plastic draws in there also & each draw has a certain set of toys in it like toy story, lego, cars, trains etc & they are the ones that are played with the most, so easy to put away & keep tidy. We try & have the toys put away at night so the living room is not 1 big toy room.

DS1 has a bookcase & desk in his room & keeps toy on there & in his wardrobe but it has to be tidy.

DS2&3 have 2 toy barrels, a couple of boxs, big plastic set of 3 draws & shelves for books (I so need to get in there & sort it out).

We have a storage cupboard where I store games.

I get rid of broken toy when they don't know & I sort out toys when they are not around.

A family member often gives me crap, toys that are nearly broken or are, clothes that stiff & have holes in as she gives all her good stuff to friends so I throw them in the bin...if the kids don't see them.

For me life runs smooth when there is not clutter & if I don't have to sort out mountains of stuff, like toys & paper. Sometimes I am so temped to stick the stuff lying around in a big bag & throw it away looking forward to the inorganic rubbish collection lol
