Hi ladies, our DD is about to turn one. We've got the grandparents asking what substantial present to get her. It's our big chance (xmas is a way off!)
so thought I'd ask what was a big hit between 1 and 2?

We're not really into big plastic toys but I'd love any advice.

My ideas so far are a bit dull but probably "safe":
- a year zoo membership (though could be too young?)
- a member to toy library
- a wooden walker or some such walking/ride on device

Thank you!

My parents got my first a table and chair set. http://www.woodentoysnz.co.nz/index.php?cPath=28&osCsid=5b8c28d3931840d3f188d83f732f565c They are quite expensive but REALLY well made and just beautiful. The kids use it every day. We figured at 1 he didnt care what he got so may as well get something "useful". I cant remember what they got our 2nd.

My kids both love the little arm chair I got. It's not a fold out couch type thing but a proper little armchair.

ditto the water/sand table things! although plastic the step2 brand ones are really well made and will be played with till about 3yo.

tbh my vote would be for the toy library membership tho, cos my boy loves getting new toys every couple of weeks and that my house isn't completely full of plastic crap!

Too young for the zoo i think, maybe for next year. I used to take my boy and he just chased the chickens. She'd probably prefer farm animals at this stage where she can get in and feel them. Ambury Farm has a free petting zoo, or Butterfly Creek also do those annual memberships.

Wooden toys are always good since they last, we got DS wooden blocks. I guess not a huge price tag on them but they are more expensive than I expected. Could be combined with those walker things that the blocks some on. DS loves his, the only trouble is that they end up all over the house lol.

for Amy's first birthday my parents bought Amy a wooden trolley and blocks from the Wooden Wheel in Warkworth. Amy is almost 5 and it is still used by both girls often and is in great shape. I have never seen such a good solid trolley as this.

Wooden trolly

It is the "large cart" and they got it with the coloured blocks

Tri-ang bike You can get them from toyworld too - and there are pink and white ones - but this was DSs favourite 'bike' from about the year mark onwards - in fact he still scoots about on it now. They last FOREVER (and yes sorry its plastic)

Another thing could be a lovely wooden dolls house - which over the years you could add to with special furniture or dolls

A toy box
