Heya

I'm new and we have just decided to stop birth control and see what happens! This is all new to us so I've done a bit of reading and see I should take about 400 mcg folic acid when ttc and up to 800 when pregnant.

So I know there have probably been heaps of FA questions but I'm just wondering which brand you guys recommend/use and what the cost is like? I saw somewhere you can get a $3 prescription from your midwife??

Ring up your GP and just ask for a script for FA, its 800mcg and it will cost $3 at the chemist for 3 months supply. Brands don't matter, its just the mcg that matters.

800mcg is the minimum recommended amount to be taking. You cant overdose on FA and whatever your body doesn't need you just pee out so its better to take the higher amount than a lower amount like 400mcg.

I personally was on 5000mcg as I had a spina bifida bub and there are even higher doses than that which are occassionally given out.

Oh, thanks very much :) Will get onto that.

What gets done at a prenatal check up? I might as well just go in and get the whole thing done. But I have a male doctor, so just wondering the details so I know if I want to go with him or book an appt with a female doc.

Cheers :)

Hey Waikatochic,
They will do bloods, basically checking for Rubella immunity and stuff, nothing to be worried about and definitely get the script for Folic acid, so much cheaper - how exciting!!! I am in Hamilton, so if you have any quesitons just yell!

Thanks Monkeys! I'm farming near Hamilton, so we are pretty close! Which clinic is your GP at? I just signed up at Hillcrest.

If I go in to the Doctor do you guys think I should get a pap smear and breast exam at the same time, since I've been on the pill for a while. Just to make sure everything is good to go!!

On that note, do any of you get your smears etc done by your male Doctor, or do you all request a woman?

Nice!! We are out Huntington way so I am at Rototuna for the Dr.
Personally I would get everything done - get your $$$ worth!! I have always had a female, so can't comment on that one.
I think if your smear isn't up to date they will suggest doing this as part of your TTC tests anyway
GL!!
If you feel like you are going to start charting then pop over to the charting thread - they ladies there are great and really have kept me sane on more than one occasion!
