Topic: Dropping morning sleep Posted: 14 December 2010 at 9:09pm |
I know this has been asked heaps before, but can't find anything in the search.
Any tips for dropping the morning sleep? How early did you do lunch before putting them down? DD's morning sleep is currently around 10:30 or 11am, but I'm not sure she could go past that time. I'm very keen to drop the morning sleep as she's not sleeping well in the afternoon (she has a sleep around 2:30 or 3pm ish). She wakes up grumpy.
Any tips greatly appreciated.

Jackson has just dropped his morning sleep at home and that is only because he protested more than usual last week for his morning nap. I did try a few months ago but it was a disaster so just waited for him to do it himself.
Our routine goes a bit like this:
6.30/7am - Wake up - Has a cup (ish) of milk
7.30/8am - Breakfast
11am - Lunch (or parts of it, yoghurt, fruit, crackers)
12pm - Nap
1.30/2pm - Afternoon Snack (generally the rest of his lunch, sandwich etc)
5.30pm - Dinner
7pm - Bed.

Similiarly I split lunch into 2.
wake 6.15 - 7am
First lunch is at 10.30 - 11 ish
Nap is from 11.45 to about 2 ish (sometimes longer can nap for 3 hours if very tired).
Second lunch around 2.30
snack 4.30 pm
dinner 6pm
bed 7-7.30
Dropped afternoon sleep, which had become 1/2 hour at 4ish and pushed morning sleep back in 10 min bits over a week.

I did the same as Millymollymandy when dropping a sleep - pushed it slowly later and kind of split lunch into two. For quite a while it was lunch at 11 and sleep at 11.30, and in the past couple of months moved to lunch at 11.30 and sleep at 12
When we dropped the afternoon sleep ds had really early bedtimes for a few days to adjust - like 5.50pm one night!

How can you tell if your baby wants to drop a sleep. DS is being a pain for his afternoon sleep but still tends to go down early in the morning for a morning sleep....makes for a LOOONG afternoon. He generally wakes at 6-6.30 so I don't think I could really stretch him out til midday lol...but am beginning to wonder if I should keep trying with afternoon sleeps or not!! Seems kinda young to be skipping them.
But then he skipped his afternoon nap and slept through 6-6 last night for the first time in ages....

Nutella - a friend said if they go three days resisting the pm nap them they are changing. Plus when they transition from one to two they will do one some days and two others, depending on how they are. Afternoon nap resistence started here at around 11 months - way earlier than i expected.

We are just doing this now. Generally DD would go down around 9.30am for her morning nap and 1pm for her afternoon nap. But she was starting to resist one or the other. So rather than just pushing out her naps on the days I thought she could manage I would hold out for as long as possible for her morning nap - to start with she'd only get to 10.30ish. If she didn't sleep for long enough I'd put her down late avo - around 4 - and would wake her before 5.30 if she didn't wake up herself. It hasn't affected her night sleeps in fact she is almost sleeping through finally! Her morning nap has moved later naturally and we are settling into a routine again.
Now our days generally go
7 am feed
8 am breaky
10.30 am big morning tea then feed,
11.30 amish nap til when ever
Lunch when awake usually between 1 and 2
3.00 pmish afternoon tea then feed
4.30 pmish short nap if needed (bedtime will be later by about 30 mins)
5.30 pm dinner
7 pm feed and bed
Some days she has an earlier morning nap and an afternoon nap I find I am going by her tired signs more again rather than a routine at the moment. But she is starting to get herself back into one which is great. On the days we are at playcentre she can last until we are ready to go which is usually around 1 which makes life much easier.

We were the opposite. Jackson started resisting his morning nap (usually at 9.30am). He has always only done 1 nap at DC so the transition for us wasnt too bad. Albeit when I tried a month or so ago it was a disaster.
We were getting 2 naps at home till 15.5 months old.
