I am planning to go back to work 3 days a week in early Feb. In late Jan we are moving from Wellington central out to Pukerua Bay which is a 35min train ride or off-peak car trip from the city (not sure on travel time in peak traffic).

I have been offered a place at a daycare near to our new place but after visiting I am not so keen on it. I'm sure it would be ok (as in safe and well-organised) but the staff didn't really seem to have their hearts in it and the children didn't seem especially happy.

It looks like I might be offered another place in a centre I'm much happier with - staff are better trained and more mature, they have a 1:3 ratio with a primary caregiver assigned - but we would have to drive into Wellington and then through to Karori which is out of the way and could add 30-45min onto the travel time in peak hour by the time we double back to work.

Not sure that the Karori one would be a goer but we might be able to find a daycare where we could zip on and off the motorway reasonably quickly on the way to Wellington (e.g. Tawa or Johnsonville) or maybe something at the opposite end of Wellington CBD from where I work. None of the day cares I would be happy with are particularly convenient.

Does anyone have any insights? Is it better to settle for a conveniently located ok daycare or take the extra inconvenience and go for a high quality day care?

I'd go with what I felt most comfortable with regardless of where it was.

An extra 45 min travel at each end of the day adds 1.5 hours to your child's day and yours- is that really feasible?

I refuse to believe that there are only 2 options open to you, perhaps time to do more research...?

maybe you should pop in and look at the first one again.one visit might not be enough to really get a feel for the staff and the environment. If it was me i might prefer one that was closer to where i worked. then you could spend the travelling time together and pop in and see her at lunch if you need to. it would also mean you were closer if anything happened. Could you contact your employer and ask if they know of any good daycares used by the staff?

If you live a 35 minute off peak trip from work, I'd go for a daycare that's close to your work, rather than your home.

I decided on picking a daycare that was closer to work than home. That way if T was sick and I needed to pick him up, I'm only 5 minutes away, rather than 25. Also, if I get stuck in traffic at the end of the day, then he's in the car with me, rather than me stressing about being late to pick him up.

I am opposite to the others. We went with a daycare that was close to our home rather than my work. One reason is that it is likely that you will be in your home longer than you are in your job. If anything happened in your work that meant you had to change jobs you could find yourself taking your child to a daycare right across town from where you need to be.

I would research others oin your area and also visit the one you have been offered a place at again. Sometimes things happen (like a child needing changing at the same time as another child has got sick or split water or something) and the daycare seems like some children are missing out. Visit at another time of day and the one thing I would say is that if they allow you to come at anytime (rather than making an appointment) then this is a major plus. It means that they are confident in their centre.

I would not be happy leaving my child somewhere that I was not confident with. Theyre just too precious. However, I also wouldnt be keen to travel an extra 30-45min to go to a great centre. I'd also look at all other centres in the area, or even at options such as in home daycare etc etc, and try and find somewhere you are happy with that is close to either home.. or work.

In my opinion they btoh have benefits.
Close to home = less travel time for the wee one (we all know those car rides can be nightmares esp if theyre tired or hungry!)
Close to work = if they are sick you can get them quickly (then of course you are faced with the travel home, but at least theyre with you)

Hi. I have my son in home based care close to our home (in Hutt Valley) and was travelling daily by train into the city to work. I found it much easier to have him closer to home as 1. think adding that much time onto each end of the day is way too much, especially if there is the possibility of getting stuck in traffic and 2. found it was easier to get family/friends to pick him up if I couldn't get home. Then they could take him home and look after him there.
Have you considered home based care? My son loves his carer and the hours can be a bit more negotiable than at childcare centres.
If you do want a centre in town though one of my friends loves the Early Years in Leeds Street.
What end of Wellington are you working?

Hi Alexmum. I will be working in Thorndon so Leeds street is better than Karori but still out of my way. That place has a really good ERO report though.

Wow, living in Pukerua Bay and working in Thorndon, Karori is one heck of a detour! I can't help on acutal centres but between your place and work you've got Plimmerton, Porirua, J'Ville, Tawa, Churton Park, Newlands plus the north end of Wellington. Surely there must be other options? Hopefully one of the other mums on here has kiddies in centres in those areas and can recommend.

Timed the drive to Karori in peak hour traffic and have decided that it will definitely take to long to get there and back. I'm going to see about six different centres this week so hopefully will find one I like which is reasonably convenient and which has a space.

Vanillabean you could have a look at Daisies in J'ville.  They just had their first ERO report last year and it was great.  I know they have a waiting list but it might be worth a look.  At least that would make for an easier drop off than Karori.   They may at least be able to give you an indication of what the wait might be like.

Thanks Happymumma. Daisies is one of the six I'm seeing this week. Their website looks fantastic plus I have a friend using it who is very happy with it. Pretty expensive but I guess that would be because of high ratios and high percentage of qualified staff. Still will have to wait and see if they have a place.

Cost includes food and nappies which makes it slightly more manageable - I love the fact that I can drop my two off in the morning with no extra supplies!  They have a pile of clothes for each and do any washing required too.  I've been pretty happy with their care and both my littlies love it.

Good luck finding a place that you like that has the space you need.  I'm sure you will!

The other place I had heard good things about when I was looking was a place called Carrigane (I'm pretty sure that's who they are!) also in J'ville.  Not sure what they're like now but two years ago they had a great reputation.  I would definitely say trust your instincts though.  You will know what seems right to you.
