I was at the doctors with Tyler yesterday having a check up and when he listened to his heart he said that it sounded like he had a heart murmur?  I have to go back on Monday to have it re-checked and if it's still there we will have to go to a cardiologist and have a scan done  Does anyone know much about heart murmurs? The doctor wasn't too helpful (not my usual doc) he just said that normally they're nothing to worry about and can be relatively common, but I still don't like the thought of ANYTHING being wrong with my babies heart!!

My son has an innocent heart murmur. It was picked up by the hospital doctor when he was 2 days old. No one seemed particularly concerned about it. My midwife heard it again when he was a week old. But because he was putting on weight, feeding well etc I was just told to bring it up with my GP at the 6 week check. Which I did. She referred me to the pediatric doctors at the hospital. He then had the scan done when he was about 7 months old. He was sedated using a oral medicine for it. It was basically a deep sleep he was in. The scan showed nothing wrong.
The doctor explained to me that the most common murmur is like noisy pipes. Where the sound is audiable but not caused by any defect or anything. This is what Sebastian has.
The other not serious murmur is where there is a small hole in the membrane separating the sides of the heart. The doctor said most of the time that heals by itself.
There are probably people on here who know more and can explain better than I can too. But I would think that you would have noticed some sort of symptoms by now if there was anything serious?
Oh, and I took Sebastian to the doctor a couple of weeks ago for something unrelated and the doctor remarked that the murmur is still there. Good luck!

Hi, I was born with a heart murmur due to a small hole. It wasn't considered a big deal even back then and I just had to have an annual check-up till I was about 7 years old from memory and by then it had healed itself. I remember my trips to the hospital and being upset that I didn't get to stay overnight in the cool childrens ward!

I have a heart child nic, and my best advice is just speak to the professionals, what a heart murmur is for your child could mean something else for another baby
Its scary to think something could be wrong with your wee guy, but hang in there
If he is feeding well, and gaining weight well etc its unlikely to be anything too serious though

Thanks for the advice everyone :) Been doing some reading up on it and was just at a playdate with my friend and she said she has an innocent heart murmur also.
Thanks raspberryjam xx - im of course thinking worse case scenario (trying not to!!) but will look forward to Monday to look into it further and get some answers, and he's always fed well but has never been a huge baby so will just have to be patient and wait and see

As another heart mum, I second what RJ says. It's always scary when they mention things like heart murmurs. My nephew has an innocent one, my son had a non-innocent (guilty?!) one. It's great you're getting seen quickly and that should mean you get answers quickly. Dr Google is not your friend.

Ask them if a scan is necessary since he will have to be sedated.
We were referred to a paed as Jack had a heart murmur. I assume Jack's was an innocent murmur as nothing has been done further. Basically the way the paed explained it to me is that as he grows not everything keeps up with eachother and his murmur was heard due to not all parts of his heart being at the same stage, does that make sense?? Probably not too late at night. Basically it is related to him growing and it relatively common

My first son has an innocent one too, diagnosed at birth.
When he was in hospital earlier this year it was still there.
No one has ever seemed concerned about it so we've never worried either.

We got it checked through the hospital, and they said something along the lines of a huge percentage of people have them, but 90% are innocent, and most people dont know they have them. It's that small percentage you worry about, hence why they get it checked though.
He still has it, and it doesnt bother him or we notice anythign different at all

I have a....non innocent one (lol!) and my heart is also upside down and back to front which oddly wasnt diagnosed until i was 17!! Obviously it hasnt affected my quality of life too much as i didnt even know i had it until then. I don't know too much about them in babies though, sorry. I hope everything is ok with your little one

Took Tyler to the doctors today as well for another check up and he said it was systolic murmur or something like that, but mild, (this was at Shorecare though so not the normal doc, we were there for something else) and so he just said to get a referal for the cardiologist to check it all out, but he didn't seem concerned at all, so here's hoping that the cardiologist tells me its nothing to worry about and we'll be on our way!
