Topic: Where baby sleeps Posted: 31 October 2010 at 10:02am |
This might seem like a silly question but as a Mum to be it's been on my mind.
I have a baby on the way and we live in a 2 storey house where the bedrooms are downstairs, but the living area is upstairs. I will be spending most of the day upstairs only coming downstairs to do washing etc.
Baby will be sleeping in our room at night in his bassinet next to our bed for 6 months, then he's got his own room to move to downstairs. I also have his changing stuff, clothes etc set up in his room.
So my question is, if I have the bassinet upstairs all day and he has his sleeps in there, and then bring the bassinet downstairs to our room when we go to bed, is that going to work or is it going to be too unsettling? I don't want to leave him by himself downstairs with a monitor or anything.
As I said sorry if silly question but Im just hoping this is going to work? Cos I don't see how else to do it with the layout of my house. In time I want to get a bedtime routine going ie with a bath, massage, story etc if I do this then put him to bed upstairs will it still work? I can have him in the dark upstairs if I need to until we go to bed, as he could be around the corner in the dining room where I could still see him if I was in the lounge.
Once he's in his own room it'll be a bit easier cos I have a baby monitor etc but I don't want to use that with him downstairs till later on.
Sorry if this is a silly question just working out how it will go in my mind

OMG your 35 weeks already!?
We are the same in the 2 storied house with rooms down stairs but everything else up. We still have DD in our room in the bassinet at nights (and Ive just moved her into her cot for day sleeps (down stairs with the monitor) but up until 2 weeks ago we had her sleep in the pram upstairs (was great cos could move her to the bathroom if I wanted a shower, outside to hang out the washing etc) I had thought about moving the bassinet but after doing it for 2 days I couldnt be bothered any more!
Or you could look at getting a 2nd bassinet off TM? But yeah the pram worked well for us (I would prob still be using it but we went away for 2 weeks and thought it was time to get her used to the cot since she will be in it soon, we havnt had any problems with her sleeping in it, she goes to sleep fine )
Sorry bit long winded, but hope it helps!

I thought about having a second bassinet but then I wondered if that would affect how he settled, being in a different bed at night to during the day? Or do they not notice? hehe cos my Mum has a Moses basket she bought to have at her place and offered for me to have it here for upstairs so I could do that.
That does help thanks :)

It hasnt seemed to have made any difference with DD. She was doing 7 hour sleeps stright at night when she was 6ish weeks old.
The moses basket sounds like a good idea, just try it and see what works. They are really cruisy when they are new born so even if you chop and change things a bit they wont be too disrupted and will adapt quickly (well Lilla did, might not be the same for everyone (Hmm considering we spent every other week at the hospital for the first month and a half I guess she didnt have much option!))

I had DD's sleeping in bassinets in the lounge during the day and in our room at night until they were 9 wks. (the bassinets had wheels so were easy to move).
When I moved them into their own room at night I put the bassinets inside the cots for a few weeks so they got used to the view and they transitioned to the cots with no probs.
But I still have them sleeping in hammocks in the lounge for day sleeps (they are 4 months) cos they won't sleep in their cots during the day (which has me beat cos they sleep through the night in their cots just fine.)

Our bedrooms are upstairs and our living areas are downstairs and have a moses basket which we transport downstairs every morning and back upstairs every night. DS has been fine with this arrangement and there have been no problems whatsoever.
I know what you mean about not wanting to use a baby monitor while he's so little- i'd be wanting to check him anyway, so it wouldn't work!!
All the best with it- i'm sure you'll find something that works really well for you

We have a 2 story house but our bedrooms are upstairs and living is down. Jackson we straight into a cot in his own room from the day he came home from hospital.
We bought a hammock for day time sleeping downstairs and during the day he would sometimes sleep in there. Otherwise he was sleeping in his cot upstairs. We had a monitor so that helped, as well as regular checks. I didnt mind going up and down the stairs cos his change table and nappies etc were all upstairs anyways, so even when he did sleep in the hammock I had to go upstairs to change him.

The Moses basket sounds perfect for during the day! My son slept in a carry cot during the day, and I could place him wherever I was, and he usually slept fine. When they're so little, its not usually an issue where they are sleeping.

When they're that little they sleep anywhere lol so you could even buy a sling and he'll settle in that. We don't have a 2 storey house but we used a bassinette and a pram indoors lol (it had a bassinette attachment) and I'd wheel her around the different rooms if she fell asleep in that hehe
I think I'll be more relaxed this time about leaving bubs in our room in her bassinette...or I'll just wear her. You'll figure out the best way as you go. It's not a silly question and it's always good to hear what others do in similar situations!

I was worried about DS being in his own room during the day with a monitor and I'm in a bungalow hehe
We have a cariboo bassinet which is quite large but easy enough to move around so during the day he would sleep in that in the dining room area and at night we would shift it down to our room and we never had any problems. Then night sleeps moved to his room in the bassinet, then at 8 weeks he did night sleeps in his cot and not long after all sleeps were in his cot. After all that he never had any problems going to sleep anywhere!
All the best for the next few months, exciting!!

Our house is same layout but we had the old school bassinets that had like a moses basket so I'd just bring the moses basket where ever I went, although we did have a monitor so sometimes she would have her day sleeps in her bassinet in our room downstairs while I was upstairs.

Hey; i will just say this. Don't stress the small stuff !! Since having our girl and having all these plans on how and where she would sleep (in lounge in the day bedroom at night etc) i have learnt that it's best to just take cues from your baby.
My girl never slept for more than 10 mins at a time in her bassinet. At two months we gave up moved her into cot at it worked better. For the first 2 months i could only get her to sleep for any decent stretch during the day by letting her sleep on me.
I would not wish a non sleeping baby on anyone. But my point is once your bubba is here in your arms you'll have a better idea of how things will work.
If i could do it again though I would first try starting sleeps in bedroom instead of lounge. But i understand logistically that is difficult for yoU?

Not a silly question!!
Our house is the opposite, living downstairs, bedrooms upstairs. So DS sleeps in our room in his bassinet at night, and downstairs in the day. I've got a portacot set up down here, but he doesn't really like sleeping in it, so he spends his naps in his swing in the living room.
I tried carrying the bassinet up and down every day for a week or two, but it was just a pain! Now I pop him in his swing and he goes right to sleep!

Thanks for all the advice, very helpful.
Have decided to try the Moses basket upstairs, bassinet downstairs at night at first and see how we go, but I'll be open to adapting it if it doesn't work for baby. I've got the Moses basket set up here now, all it needs is a baby in it hehe
Ive got a change table set up in his room downstairs so thinking I might get some baskets and put some nappies and things in them and a change mat for upstairs so I don't have to go up and down all the time. I'm sure I'll figure all these systems out hehe :) thanks again

Thats what weve done Lisa, I have all DDs clothes upstairs (since we bath her upstairs) and nappies upstairs, although we have the change table down stairs. Only used it in the middle of the night when we changed her nappy (dont chage it in the night anymore, havnt used it for a couple of months!)

Hehe my lounge looked like a bombsite until recently because I moved all of DDs clothes upstairs to the lounge! Only just put them all back yesterday but during the NB stage where you often have several outfit changes a day it was mega handy! And second the basket for nappies/wipes etc and change pad/mat or even just a towel is good too!
Where is your bathroom out of curiosity? Ours is upstairs with the lounge/kitchen etc and I ended up moving the change table up to the bathroom as it was much easier (plus DD has a tiny room...)
Emma same here re the change table until I moved it into the bathroom - now I use it for baths (taking her clothes off and often lay the towel on it to put her on after her bath and give her a quick dry before I take her to have a massage/get dressed.

The bathroom is downstairs annoyingly lol do have a toilet upstairs but I don't think the change table would fit in there. I thought maybe I'd use it during the night but I guess we'll see how we go. Im not too worried if I don't use it so much as Im not that happy with it, doesn't seem so stable I should have got one of those nice wooden ones.
Hmm thats interesting about the clothes, maybe I could get some of those plastic drawers or something to put newborn clothes in upstairs for the meantime.
As you can tell I love systems and organisation LOL hence trying to figure that out now

Once they roll etc, I had a lot of people tell me that it's time to stop changing them on the change table otherwise you constantly need 1 hand on them includig strapped on!
Dw you'll figure it out though!
