My DS is 8 months old now, and has always been relatively good at self settling. He USED to go down for his naps and night time sleep quite well, sometimes a grizzle or two but nothing major. He is still waking for a feed, usually once a night but can be anywhere between 10pm and 5am. After this feed he goes straight back to sleep.

So, the last few weeks, he has started to really struggle to go down for all sleeps. Basically screaming his little head off the minute I lay him down. Eventually he sleeps, but has also started waking up crying as well. I have taken him to the Dr to check him over and he says there is nothing wrong (I thought perhaps it was his ears).

Then the last few nights he has woken, fed, and then the MINUTE I lie him down in his cot he cries hysterically. The first two nights I thought it was teeth as he usually settles so well. Eventually I brought him in to bed with me and he fell asleep after a lot of patting.

Then last night he did the same, but only cried for a few minutes before falling asleep. Tonight he woke 45 min after going to bed, I fed him, then he he started crying again after I put him down in his cot.

Anyone else been through or going through this? Is it a phase? I have started to worry that he is just "playing" me so that he can stay asleep with me, but is that giving him too much credit??

Could he be teething? Their teeth can be really sore when they are lying down. My wee man can be happy enough when he is up and about playing in the day and distracted but when he needs to sleep he finds it hard or else he wakes up crying. It usually lasts a week or so and then it all settles again.

Lily is doing this too and I'm not sure if it's because she worries when I leave the room or if it's teeth (I've noticed 2 new ones on the side of her mouth) anyway she does this a lot, esp during the day and is also doing the 45 min wake up after going down for the night (but I've noticed it's only on the nights she has bad day sleeps).

Lily has also started getting panicky when I leave the room during the day, even to go toilet!

Is this happening for you as well? The worry when you leave the room?

Don't they start going through separation anxiety at that age? Sorry my memory is shocking and I can't remember. Maybe that is the cause of the sleeping problems

DD also started crying at bedtime at night when I put her down a couple of weeks ago. I didn't know what was wrong - figured it was teething, but felt so helpless because she used to go to bed with few problems.I found that a 5 minute cuddle on her feeding chair in her room after the last feed seemed to work. As long as she gets that cuddle she is fine!

We have a version of this going on with our 8 month old as well - went from previously self-settling really well for her day naps to not being able to settle herself at all without much cuddling. She wouldn't cry a whole lot (except if it happens at night), just lies there squawking and fidgeting despite being obviously really tired where previously she would have just relaxed and gone off to sleep. Things are improving for us after a couple of weeks of this and I put it down to a developmental phase / anxiety thing maybe combined with teething (although she has yet to get any teeth!).

What seems to be working for us is extra cuddles before putting her in bed so she is more relaxed (but not asleep), and patting her until she is doing her blank staring before leaving the room. At night, if she wakes within an hour or two of being fed (so is not hungry), it seems to work to give her a quick cuddle then settle her to sleep in her bed rather than letting her fall asleep on us - she cries a bit in the cot, but when she goes to sleep she stays asleep, whereas if she falls asleep on us she invariably wakes crying as soon as being put in bed and it can take over an hour to get her back to sleep!

I know it feels like a big backwards step to having to go back to actively settle them, but it seems to be working for us and we are gradually being able to reduce the amount of settling we have to do. I actually think she has just kind of gotten over it by herself though rather than anything we are doing. I'd say just give him a few weeks to see if he sorts it out for himself.

DS did this when he was just starting to crawl. I also put it down to a developmental phase and kinda just rolled with it. If he wanted to be awake in the middle of the night practising his mad crawling skillz, then so be it. It only lasted a few weeks and then it was back to normal.

Maybe I'm a sucker....

I just leave her to it and she doesnt settle after 5 mins I go back in and try re settle her.

I do a bit of the tough love now days, seems as I know why she's crying, I can tell the diff between her crys now(shes 13 months).
