    Posted: 08 October 2010 at 1:15pm
I am fast losing patience with our tv!!

We have had freeview for a couple of years with not perfect reception on the TVNZ channels, but OK. It sometimes would go all pixilated for no reason but always watch watchable - just annoying.

Last month I got Tivo, which in the first days was okish but not as good as the reception on freeview, which then just got worse until we had no TVNZ channels at all.

I had a guy come out last week (after advice from Tivo Support) to check our aireal, which he repointed towards the sky tower from Waiatarua, as we have a clear view of the sky tower and he was sure it would result in much better reception. He also re-wired the cables from the aireal to go straight to the TV instead of to a splitter box and then to the TV. End result - absolutely no channels on Tivo!!

Plugged freeview back in and hey presto - perfect reception.... for three days!! This morning it was unwatchable again as it was all pixilated.

This is driving me nuts!!

What is wrong with our tv reception!??

We get that when it's really windy or stormy ... but then we live in Wellington! What is the wind like where you are? The dish may need to be secured better, or you may need a better, sturdier dish.

Sorry, I just asked DH and realised you may have a UHF aerial rather than a satellite dish, seeing as the tech repositioned the aerial to face the Sky tower (as an aside, does the Sky tower broadcast Freeview? Seems a bit odd considering they are competitors...). But sounds like you just need to get the guy back to do his job properly!! (and you may need a bigger aerial)

Hi, thanks so much for your help! Yes it is a UHF aireal and as nice as the guy was who came out I can't help but think he doesn't really know enough about digital tv to help!! Apparently the sky tower transmits digital frequency which is what freeview and tivo get. Freeview is back to normal this arvo so maybe that was a temporary glitch but the tivo still doesnt work at all - I think maybe we have a dud tivo box. I hope so as I dont really have any $$$$ to throw at this problem!!!

did you get this sorted? We have just got tivo and it is basically unwatchable and is driving me nuts too! I'm not sure where to start to look at the problem, I think it gets worse when its windy. SO frustrating!

WE have a tv tech business. YOu need to get a tv tech out. You may need a satelitte dish. You DEF need them to find the reception with a satellite finder, not by just "pointing" it in the general direction. It may cost you about $200 but it will be worth it.

Yes we did! We repointed the arial ourselves and had perfect tivo reception. It would sometimes get a bit patchy in extreme weather but I think thats normal.

We have now moved house and need a new fitting for the arial cable into the tivo so plugged in bunny ears instead - perfect reception!

We;ve had freeview for about a month, and just lately it has gone crap. But I think it's just the weather.
We just have a UHF and DH pointed it the same way all the neighbours ones are pointing.

We were told when we bought the TV (built in freeview) That you ned a UHF not a satilite dish. AND you ned to make sure that freeview is actually in your area as some area's of NZ don't yet have the arials put in.

When NZ goes digital, they'll do itarea by area, not everyone at the same time, and Waikato/Auckland is last.

We brought a built in Freeview TV a couple of months back. we transfered to the digital reception a few weeks ago (after being told by a friend who is also in rotorua he had it with bunny ears)...

but we continually get glitches in the noise - ask in a mini static noise, or a silent blip. we thought it was the TV but DVD's and the old reception are fine... Anyone know what is happening?? I hate technology when it doesnt work properly!
