My 4.5 month old DS self settles. He has always gone down to bed at night (6:30pm) without any problems, occasionally he'd cry but only for a minute or two.

When he goes to sleep during the day he also cries for a minute or two before falling asleep.

But as of the past few nights, he has cried for AGES (20-30mins) when going down to bed at night. It's definitely the wind down cry with lots of pauses in between - I'm just wondering why he's suddenly decided to do this?

Anyone else had a similar experience?

Hi, sorry to hear you're having probs with your little one.  I don't have any advice to offer tho but am wondering if you've changed his bedtime routine at all, or have changed something in his cot/bedroom?  That could be why he's so upset?  Or is he still hungry or just wanting a cuddle?

Sorry I couldn't help - hope you get it sorted soon.

Nope no changes whatsoever. And he's definitely not still hungry. Nor is he the cuddly type - can't get a cuddle out of him for the life of me!!!!

Can't seem to figure it out.

Same thing happened here! T self settles and always used to go down at night happily - no protest whatsoever. But when he got to 5 months old he began to do his winddown/protest cry when we put him down at night, or else he would talk away in his cot and shout out at us every now and then. I put it down to him doing more during the day so taking longer to wind down at night.

I have exactly the same thing happening here too...normally DD is good at self settling, and always has been, but she has started hating bedtime recently and crys/yells at us for about 20mins each night. I'm pretty sure its not overtiredness, wind or hunger. I joke to my husband that she just hates going to bed and wants to stay up with the grown-ups, 'cos I remember feeling like that as a kid

I'll be watching this thread for answers on how to fix it

Koby has been a bit like this the last few nights, it's like he is not tired, and just wants to be held. i tend to leave him a while to self settle because he does eventually find his thumb and put it in there. If he keeps it up, normally we pick him up and give his back a good rub for a while and he nods off finally.

Well it's good to know I'm not the only one!!!!

It's not toooooo bad I guess as I know it is a wind-down type cry, it's just weird that it's happened all of a sudden. I wonder if it'll also stop all of a sudden - that would be nice!

I think that they just go through phases like this. My DS has had times where he settles without a peep of a noise and times when he cries off on and on for 20-30mins. Right now we are having a bit of a crying phase yet 2 weeks ago he was fine. Perhaps teething or overtiredness play a role but I keep telling myself that the phase will pass again and as long as I have checked that he isn't unwell or in pain then that is all I can really do.

Could be his age as they get much more aware around the 4 month mark. Or is he working on a milestone (crawling, rolling, etc) as this can disrupt sleep for awhile. Keep perservering and I reckon in comes right in 2 weeks tops.
