 Topic: Recurrent/persistent ear infections

DD has been getting ear infections over and over and over recently. She's had 3 courses of antibiotics (both amoxycillin and erythromycin), and now she's complaining and pulling at her ears again, and the doc says seeing as it's not responding to antibiotics, its probably viral and we just have to wait. Poor baby.
Not only does it make her sleeping worse (and it's crap already), it also prompts her to bite when BF, so it sucks all round.
Any one with similar experiences or ideas? How can I make my poor baby's ears better?

I've heard of people taking children to the chiropractor and having some adjustment done which has helped with ear infections.

we had this for DS when he was 10months- we were at the doctors every single week - if it wasnt for a new infection, it was the follow up the next week to see if it was clear or not. We tried different vitamins just to boost his immunity in general and so forth but no luck. Eventually after 5(?) months of this (we were at the point he was building huge immunity to many of the antibiotics)we got grommets put in, and while he continued for another 2 months to get ear infections they no longer bothered him in the slightest (just his ear oozed). He's now 3 years 3 months and theyre just falling out now, he's had maybe 2-3 more infections since that bout after the grommets but again no pain..
Grommets saved us.

We are going through this now. DD has just finished her 4th round of ABs and is sick again today with a cold, red throat, fluid in the ears and one ear is looking red according to her dr. Luckily she is (almost) old enough for decongestant medicine (meant to be for over 2yrs but dr recommended it) so hopefully this will help.
Meanwhile, I started a thread not long ago (actually about ABs and yellow teeth issues) and Babe suggested using garlic oil in her ears. I have the capsules as I couldn't find the oil alone. Will let you know how I get on.
I did mention the garlic oil plan to her dr and he thought I was a bit crazy  but some drs don't believe in natural remedies and I guess he's one of them!
ETA; I found THIS thanks to Dr Google about how to use garlic for a baby's ear infections.
ETA(more) So Jody's decongestant has knocked her out pretty well, her afternoon nap has been going for nearly 5 hours!! So, I have been googling away Came across THIS site as well which has all sorts of interesting ideas. Some sound great (vinegar, garlic, tea tree oil, breastmilk), some not so great (how do you feel about putting your own urine in your child's ear.....?), very interesting read people's experiences with home remedies.

If you want to go the specialist way, I recommend Dr Cabraal or Dr Stegilhous(sp?) at Totara House. Either one is wonderful but I think Dr Cabraal is better with younger kids. If you can see one of them.

I took my son to a cranial Osteopath at 10 months after about 8 ear infections. After three visits he never developed another infection.

Luke and Zavier had constant ear infections - we would be taking them at least every second week to the DR for months. They also had reflux and that I think was part of the reason. The ear specialists at Greenlane thought they required grommets, but the ear specialist at North Shore didn't want to do them, he reckoned it would come right, and (touch wood) they haven't had then now since just before turning two - on the downside we now end up with tonsillitis every month, guess you can't win them all!
I found that making them sit up for bottles helped with the ears, and just giving them pamol and ibuprofen, it helped dull the pain for them. And they seemed to come right after the first day of amoxcil too.

How are you getting on with the ears T_Rex?
My son has had almost non-stop ear infections this year, we had 10 days then 20 days on antibiotics, ended up on a type of phenergan which helped ease things but hasn't cleared them. Saw an ENT specialist today who said this has been the worst winter in his career, he's seen so many kids and adults with similar infections. We're booked in to get grommets next month.
Chiropractic didn't help us but it does some people!
One thing we found great was elevating the head of the cot - phone books under the mattress - and this stopped the screaming every time he lay down.

As a baby, when I was teething I instantly got ear infections..Infact even now as I'm cutting a wisdom tooth my ear aches.
I never got gromets tho coz once I stopped teething the ear infections went away..
I was always ABd up for them tho..
Sorry I'm no actual help but thought it could be similar reason for these other poor bubbas
Hope my DS doesn't take after me!

Fingers crossed we've been ok for the last week or so... long may it continue! I'm hoping summer will help, if it ever arrives
