Hi, I am new to this site and was hoping someone can give me some ideas....I had a d and c on the 18 august due to a blighted ovum (I should of been 12 weeks) I havent had any blood tests since then, but have done a few tests to check my level was going down...I had a few positives then finally 2 negitives about 5 days ago...but I decided to do another and positive....two more since positive...I have rung to nurse and she says she doesnt think its left over hormones from the miscarriage...I have been worried about there being some tissue missed from the d and c but she doesnt think so...has anyone else been through this? Thanks

Hi Kiwigurl, I too had a D&C due to a missed miscarriage but haven't had any tests to check has your cycle gone back to normal? It's probably a little early to tell. My cycle went back to normal, so have just assumed that everything is OK.
If you are worried I would ask your dr for a blood test to be sure.

I can imagine it would be an exciting/nerveracking time, contemplating another baby so soon, although I have read in numerous places that you are at your most fertile after a D&C so maybe - and if so congratulations!!
I can only talk about me and what I would do, but I think for my own peace of mind I would keep pushing for a blood test - but patience is definitely not a strong point so would want to know either way.
Keep us updated as to how you get on, and feel free to just 'brain dump' on here when ever you want - the girls are great, and I have found it grea to be able to get things off my chest without having to burden those closest to me...specially since my Best Friend has a new born and I know she feels so bad for what I ahve been through

First of all kiwigurl so sorry to hear of your loss. I to have had a blighted ovum and found out at our 12week scan, I had a natural mc tho so mine was a bit of a drag. I had a few hcgs done to check it dropped which it did. I would have thought the drs should have been checking your hcg as how would they know this isn't a new pregnancy??? Then again I think the hcg can be in your system for a few weeks. Did you use the same pg tests each time?

So my advice would be to push for a blood test if you can.

All the best and let us know how you got on.

Thanks for the hugs.. The negative tests were quickstream and the positives are first response (the little stick ones) I would def think it was just left over hormone if i hadnt of had those negatives earlier...I will have to wait out over the weekend now anyway..

Hugs hun... what a tough place to be!

It is a hard one really as both could be very likely!

By quick calcuations its coming up to 4 weeks since your D&C and it can take up to 6 weeks for you to get a period after a miscarriage so it could be your hormones still evening out. That said, you could have slipped right back into your usual cycle and ovulated and it could be a new pregnancy.

I personally would be bypassing the nurse and seeing my GP and demanding a BT with a repeat in a couple of days to see if the HCG is increasing or decreasing....

Will keep everything crossed for you though and welcome to Ohbaby.

I agree with Mel, you probably need to get a couple of hcg blood tests to check which way it's going... quickstream aren't nearly as sensitive as first response (despite claiming to be) so that could explain the mixture of results. How long between tests? maybe you could do another quickstream, seeing as you have got a couple of BFNs on them, then if it is pos I would think it is most likely a new preg...

What a confusing time for you

I think a couple of women on here recently had a D&C and the hcg stayed in their system for some time afterwards, so i agree with Mel, your best bet would be to get at least 2 seperate hcg bloods done, a few days apart to see if it is rising or falling... a rise would indicate a new pregnancy, whereas a fall would show your still settling back down after the procedure...

Its also very common to get pregnant almost immediately following a miscarriage, so dont be too surprised if this is the case... oh and for what its worth, I was getting questionable lines on a quick brand test, yet a first response showed a very clear positive, they appear to be a bit more sensitive than the quick branded ones

Thanks for your replys everyone. I have just taken another test and the line is much darker than this mornings one, very obivious line now...but dont know that lines getting darker def indicate rising hcgs...might be in my imagination but by boobs are feeling a bit sore..

Hey kiwigurl, so so sorry to hear of your recent mc.
I hope I can shed some light on things with my story.

I had a mc and had a D&C done on 6th May. Then around mid June I still hadn't had AF and I was always had a very regular cycle of 29-30 days. I did a HPT and it was positive, that was on the 15th June. That's 40 days after D&C. I didn't think it was likely to be left over HCG so I was over the moon thinking I was pg again. I had just had a checkup BT done on the 13th June so I went and got a BT done on the 16th to compare the results to see if HCG had risen. But it turned out it was left over HCG being picked up on the HPT. Happy one moment and gutted the next. Coincidentally my AF started the next day just to top it all off!

So yes it is possible that HCG will stay in your system a long time after a m/c, even if it's a D&C. I didn't have any left over residue from D&C either to explain why HCG was still there. Sometimes the body just takes awhile to adjust.

Some useful info for you - a HPT will pick up your HCG if it's 5 or higher. So they are very sensitive.

In saying all that, if your test is getting darker, that is a very good indication that the HCG is increasing. I would have thought they should be doing BT's to check things anyway. So I would be definitely going to see the GP and asking for BT's.

Good luck! (and let us know what happens! )

ETA - just realised it looks like I have an amazing memory for dates! Nope, I went and hunted in the threads to find the dates to make sure I gave to you right time frames

Thanks for your story Bobsta, sorry to hear of your loss...I am def trying not trying think of this as a new pregnancy in case it is those old hormones...it just seems so weird, I wouldnt even question getting a positive still at this stage unless I hadnt got those negatives...I did ask the nurse if it could be left over tissue that was "building up" again but she said no, she even said I shouldnt be getting positive tests this long after the d and c (which I know is incorrect)

The first test that I did that was positive (which was yesterday morning)took right to the end of the 10 minutes to come up and it was pretty faint. Then another this morning a teeny bit darker (about the same time to show) then the one this arvo (had to squeeze out a few drops) was def positive at 5 mintues and I can see the line from a distance...so I have one test left and I am going to wait until sunday am and surely if it is a new pregnancy it will come up really fast?? Then I will go to the Dr on monday morning.

That sounds like a good plan. Yeah I have learnt that nurses will tell you all sorts of things that can be complete rubbish. I can't believe she is saying that you can't have leftover HCG, BUT, she won't do a BT for you either to check things. Is she just a nurse for decoration or does she actually do nurse things at some point??!!! Honestly, I would have thought she might like to help figure out what's going on, being in the business of helping people and all that!

Might pay to book an appt with the GP, they should be a little more onto it and organise bloods for you given what you have been through

As a nurse I can say that not all of us are useless but some really are, it's like any profession.

If you were a patient at the Medical Centre I work at we would have done at least 1 set of bloods to ensure your levels were dropping. But if you rang me and gave me that info I'd get you back in for a repeat urine test in clinic and bloods. I'd say it's best to see your GP. We had one woman who had a MC and we tested her levels every few days to check they were reducing and she had one where the level was crazy low (17 or something) and so we told her that it looked like she had almost cleared the HCG out of her system. 4 days later she was in to see the Dr complaining of nausea and sore boobs, we repeated the urine and bloods and she was pregnant again 3 weeks after her MC. The low test result was when the levels were heading back up again!!!! So sometime we give incorrect results based on the information we have (wouldn't have expected her to be pregnant as she had told us she wasn't trying for a baby in the first place, so low level fit with heading down!).

In defense of the nurse the info she gave you is correct, in MOST cases you wouldn't be getting positive results this long after a D&C but as in Bobsta's case not everyone is the same and some people take a lot longer to clear the HCG out of their system. She should have recommended you have bloods done or that you see the Dr but every clinic has different procedures and guidelines and I don't know what theirs are. As I said before we would have done bloods before now anyway. And it would be best to see your GP.

Good luck I hope it all works out ok for you.
