    Posted: 30 August 2010 at 2:49pm
Hi all. I had a miscarriage at the beginning of August and my partner and I have agreed to start TTC but I was wondering how long it is advised to wait after a m/c to start TTC? I spoke to my GP, gynaecologist and a midwife and all gave me varying wait times. Anyone want to shed some light? So nervous about TTC again but want baby number 2 so badly!

HI there,
I too had a MC at the beginning of Aug and am currently TTC.... because I have PCOS I was told that I should start trying straight away, some people say that you should wait however I feel that I will just leave it to my body to tell me when it's the right time!
So once I had the one person tell me to just go with trying I did, and am currently in TWW .. although am not hopeful this month - is my first month charting though, which is helping me understand my body more
I say just do whats right for you and FX we both have a BFP soon!

I know what you mean, I think alot of why they say you should wait is because of the emotional toll that a MC can have on you, and to get you back in the right frame of mind.
Some people also say that you seem to be more fertile after a MC - so for me on the off chance this could be the case for me, we were straight back into it.
Honestly babe I say go with your gut - it tends to work for every other aspect in life so why not TTC too!

Do what feels best for you! For me it was straight away and it happened straight away- no af between! It's not easy but then I don't think time would have made a difference to me.
GOODLUCK & BABY VIBES COMING YOUR WAY!!!!

I was told to wait 2 cycles post mc, the ob likened it to composting your garden!!!!! He also said the chance that I would mc again if I conceived in that 2 months was higher but did not necessarily mean I would mc, if that makes sense. It was soooo hard to wait as I wanted to TTC again straight away.

I agree with the others and would go with your gut feeling hun.

I hope you get your BFP soon ladies *blows babydust*

Thats one of the reasons why I was charting.... I was told to use the day of MC as day 1 of the cycle, which I did...I OV'd on day 20, and am now 8DPO.... my issue is that with the PCOS my cycles are not consistant so I relied on the charting... also being first one post MC even if you are normally quite regular you may not be this month. FX - you and me WILL be in the May 2011 thread

I started charting after my mc too as I did not know my fertile days. Also I thought it would give me something to focus on while I waited those 2 cycles

How do I chart? Sorry if that sounds stupid haha but my son was conceived easily. We decided to start TTC and first try got pregnant with him, same with the m/c baby. Maybe willpower is my required ingredient for conception? Haha.

Hi Mum2Ollie, sorry to hear you've lost a pregnancy.

The advice I've picked up is that you should use condoms during sex until mc bleeding has stopped due to risk of infection (higher risk if bleeding as cervix is still cranked open a bit, is my understanding)

I've been told to wait a month before ttc this time. Seems protocol for post mc advice varies from area to area. Last year I was told to wait 3 months before trying again. I think thats more the advice after a d+C as its supposed to scrape quite thin (I had miso though)
New research from the Uni of Aberdeen supports ttc sooner rather than later after mc (although 2 years ago they seemed to have been saying the opposite. But the recent study from what I have read of it sounds quite extensive, with a sample of 31000 women or something of that magnitude, with more followup as to outcome and going full-term/birth methods etc?)
The reason for waiting a month is just to make dating a new pregnancy easier, and waiting longer if emotionally you need to grieve.

My understanding is that 1st cycle post mc is quite often not your 'usual' cycle, but I guess with PCOS there is no such thing. Last year it took 5 weeks for af (I think) but I reckon my body believed it was still pregnant till about 3 weeks post mc. I don;t know if this is different for if you have mc spontaneously or had to induce it after a few weeks though?
Temping is dead easy, all you need is an alarm set and a bbt thermometer. Look for these in the chemist as they are more accurate (to 2 digits past the decimal point) than the normal everyday thermometers.
The idea is to take your temp same time everyday, same place (I think mouth is commonest), always after 3 hours unbroken sleep (if you have that luxury with your little one!). When you ovulate, you will see a temp rise of anything from .1 of a degree (mines usually .5 of a degree), only thing about charting is that you don't know you've ovulated til afterwards.
I found using opk's AND charting much more reliable - easier to 'plan' bd around.

You can chart for free (or pay if you want) at fertilityfriend, they can email you tutorials that tell you LOADS of helpful stuff too. theres also the taking charge of your fertility site, where charting is slightly different inputting (but same outcome!)
The Charting Girls thread in this form is also recommended, laydees are really supportive and helpful and happy to answer charting questions as they arise. Totally recommend you have a wander in there and maybe post if you decide to chart, you'll learn all kinds.

Good luck!

Spanky covered that off beautifully!!! I set up my chart on fertilityfriend, but I must say there is so much info on there that all of the dumb questions I have got along the way I have just asked in the charting thread and the girls have always been able to help
I agree on the OPK and will be doing this from next month as they hadn't arrived yet

Woah Thanks spanky! I'm going to check out fertilityfriend now. We didn't have sex at all until the bleeding had well and truly cleared off.
Monkeys, Where do I get OPKs in bulk... Lol

seeing as I'm still here, I'll answer as well: baby4u website for me. Also got some off trademe, sometime preggy people list their leftovers. got some half price but not used them
I like to think the leftovers might retain some preggy luck ;-)

If you had a natural m/c (no D&C) you can TTC right away. Otherwise go with what the dr says. Your first cycle or two could be out of whack - mine went to five weeks so the ov date would have been a bit odd.
