After nap help for younf toddler/older baby

At 12 1/2 months dd has two naps. she goes to bed at 7 and wakes at around 6.20.

She's tired again at 10 and goes down for about 1 hr 45 (sometimes 2 hours) and about 80 % of the time she doesn't settle and given its late in the day i then pop her the stoller and she happily goes to sleep until around 4.45 ish.

she goes to sleep morning at night without a fuss on her own.

I think she's moving towards one big sleep in the middle of the day, which is why the pm sleep is such a hassle, but the problem is that she doesn't last long enough in the morning to do that.

It seems that how she'll do it is to push the mornign nap back further and further, till she doesn't have an afternoon one and goes to bed a bit earlier for a while.

I'm curious to know how others managed this? Did you gradually extend the morning nap later and later or did you go cold turkey? How do I know when she is ready?

We have an added difficulty of being 200m from the fire station and given its still 1955 in rural Taranaki the $%^&ing fire alarm goes of at 12 6 days a week. I have white noise CD that blocks out some sound, but am nervous if she sleeps at say 11- 11.30 it will wake her.

oh and tried bed at 10.30 am about two weeks ago - disaster - overtired and wouldn't settle - and crashed out at 1.30 for an hour.

the transition to just 1 sleep every day took us about 6 weeks I just use to guage what time DS woke in the morning and what his mood was like to whether he would have 1 or 2 sleeps that day. So it was a bit random and I couldn't really plan anything for the days until the morning when I knew what he was doing but it worked ok. He generally had 1 sleep one day and then 2 the next but it worked well for us. (the days he had 1 sleep he would generally sleep 2-3hours)
oh and I use to put him down about 11 -11:30ish (I would have to keep him busy/distracted for probably about an hour before he went down'.
Now that he is on 1 sleep he goes to bed about 12 - 12:30ish and will sleep for anything from 1.5hours-3hours

I hope that makes sense

I always give him lunch before bed, so he is sleeping with food in his tum and not waking hungry.

Going through the same here. Some days I give my DS 1 nap (when it has to be that way to fit in with plans e.g. music group) and other days he has 2 (when we don't have set plans for the day).

If it is a 2 nap day then the first one is around 10am and I will cut it short (at about 1 hour 10mins) so that he is tired enough for his afternoon nap when he then takes another 1 hour or so (at around 2.30).

On the 1 nap day it is hit and miss as to how long he sleeps - could be 1 hour or just over 2hours. I give him lunch at 11.30 on those days and into bed around 12.

It is a tricky time and there are alot of days where it goes pear shaped and he is overtired and into bed early that night to compensate! But my DS has always been a bit of a puzzle to work out in terms of naps.

There was another thread on this just a couple of weeks back or so, there were some good ideas in there too.

We started dropping to one sleep on C's first birthday, he just refused his afternoon nap one day and was up from 11 - 6,30pm

If we were out of the house I found he could get to about 11.30am before needing a nap (we'd come home for this) but at home it was much harder work stretching the nap out till a bit later.

He also went back to two definite naps/day when we went on holiday about 2 weeks after he dropped the sleep! And took another 6 weeks - 2 months to go back to one nap after that.

When C was going down at 11ish I would give him lunch when he woke up, just made sure he had a big morning tea around 10-10.30 and included protein in that (eg cheese or a yoghurt). Now we have lunch at 11.30 then play for a bit longer and then bed by 12.30. C will sleep anywhere from 1.5 - 3 hours now (at 20 months) and then back to bed between 6.30 and 7pm.

No idea whether it would make a difference but we had also switched to breakfast first (about 7.30) and a bottle at 8am ish as well. Can't REALLY see why that would matter though

We have just been through this with DD and are now pretty settled one one sleep a day. When I started having trouble putting her down in the afternoons I cut her morning sleep down to no longer then 45min-1h. That worked good for a while. Now it's still hard some days to keep her awake til after lunch so most days I take her for a walk when she use to sleep in the mornings. She doesn't sleep in the buggy but gets enough rest to last til after lunch. If we need to go out to do something in the afternoon I put her down for a nap in the morning. I also find that if I give her a snack she'll last a bit longer. most of our days look like this:
8.30 awake, cup of milk, breakfast
10.30 morning tea/snack
12.00 lunch
1.00 cup of milk, sleep (2-3hours)
3.00 snack (if awake)
5.00 dinner
6.30 bottle
7.30 bed
We are not very strict with the times so a bit different every day, part from the bed time, sometimes she goes to bed earlier but never later then 7.30pm.
Good luck, it takes a while to adjust. Some days DD use to be so overtired I couldn't get her to eat her dinner but it does get easier.
Forgot to say DD is almost 14 months.

Mamma E our DD's sound exactly on the same timetable. Is it luck or training that babies sleep till past 8am? If DD wakes before 8 I leave her to play in her bed until its 'wake up time'

skp - probably good luck. Despite using lots of "training" the last sleep we have had is 7.15. We are cool with that as we have to get up at 6.30 anyway.

skp- I think it's just luck. I have never followed any books or tried to get her in to a routine it just happened over time. I did all the no no's, fed her to sleep let her sleep on me etc. She use to be a terrible sleeper, especially during the day, now she loves her bed.
What also helpes with waking late in the mornings is that I'm lucky enough to be able to stay home with DD. Many babies get in to a routine of waking early in the morning because both parents have to get up to go to work.

One thing I found fantastic during the transition time was to put my little man down at the same time each morning and afternoon (on advice from a developmental expert) - more importantly for the afternoon. For about a month he wouldn't sleep for the morning one but happily chilled out in his cot for an hour, chatting away and playing with whatever toy or book I'd popped in there with him. that gave him a chance to refresh and me a chance to shower uninterrupted and get a bit of housework done.

Just follow your babe's signs, as what works for some doesn't work for others, and the best advice I can give is to just persist!    12-ish hours overnight with 3-4ish hours during the day is good for that age I believe.

Update:

Am gentely pushing morning nap back by a few minutes every few days.

Day 1 - no afternoon sleep - morning sleep 10 mins later - 12 hours over night (2 hours day sleep). Going to bed 1/2 hour earlier tired but not grizzly.

Day 2 - no afternoon sleep (kept later monring sleep) 12 hours 15 over night. (2 hours day sleep)

Day 3 - as before 11 1/2 hours o/n, 40 mins morning sleep, 10 mins early afternoon (in car on outing) - 1 hour way home. (1 hour 50 day sleep) Grumpy in morning, but OK afte 12 and in afternoon.

Tomorrow I might try putting her in cot with curtains open for chill out, with toys etc. I was having great success with consistent times for naps, but doesn't want to sleep if has morning sleep is grumpy if wakes early.

Hasn't done more than 3 hours day sleep for a couple of months, is very happy so assume she's getting enough (14 hours seems pretty average for most babies round here of her age - one boy has 4 hours and is up in middle of night eeek).

A little rocky with transition, but we are rolling with it, have realised that daylight savings is one month away and by then I hope she'll wil be old enough to last another 40 mins up and go to nap at midday.
