My 6 month old son has HORRENDOUS eczema on his face, looks just awful :-( I have tried everything to help it including aqueous cream, fatty e cream, xma ease, pot of gold balm, etc etc but all to no avail. It is getting worse, so I went to the Dr yesterday who prescribed micreme. I am soooooooo reluctant to use it but really want to find something that helps. Anyone else had experience with this?? What were the results??

I have used it twice. I was told only to use a TINY bit as it can thin the skin. And to only apply it to nasty red patches, not mild eczema patches. It worked quickly - within a day. But just use a tiny, tiny amount.

I wouldnt be keen to use something like that on the face either, but then DD's bad ezcema was never on her face- other than when she reacted to a sunscreen, so I didnt have to think about wether to us it on her face or not.
Do u have any idea whats causing the eczema? Is it anywahere else of just his face?

Yes, my wee man was pretty much covered in eczema before we got onto a Dr who actually knew what he was doing! Hunters face was totally raw and he would scratch so much over night his PJs would be covered in blood which was just awful.

We got a mixture of cream made up and that the only thing that has worked for us. Not sure where in Auckland you are but we went to see Dr Williams at the Mt Wellington A+E after our PN recommended him. He doesnt take appts so you just need to ring and make sure he is there, and turn up. We had tried pretty much all the other things on your list with no improvement at all.

Good luck!

Thanks Huntersmama! My DS only has it on his face, nowhere else and the Dr has NO idea what is causing it. I am at a loss too

I will give the micreme a go I guess, and if I don't see any improvement over the next few days, I will take your recommendation and try Dr Williams. THANKS!!!

Well, fate has decided! Dr Williams isn't back on till Monday, so I guess I will give the micreme a go and see him when he is back!

My wee boy has developed eczema in the last couple of months too, the dr gave me hydrocortizone creme with the same warning, only use a tiny amount and inbetween times use aquaeous creme to moisturise, I found it works really well as long as I put it on every day, if I stop it the eczema comes back - its frustrating coz I really dont want to keep putting a steriod on my son as like someone said it thins the skin.

ETA Riley has it on his face too, I just make sure I hold him steady while I put the creme on as its on the side by his eye if that makes sense.

DS has eczema all over too. I have cut wheat from my diet for just over a week now and that has shown a marked improvement, although he does have a couple of really bad patches on his face, under his chin, which of course is made worse because of his constant stream of dribble.

I have been given 1% hydrocortisone cream and micreme for the bits on the rest of his body but was told to stear clear of putting it on his face. Personally I wouldn't put it on his face without speaking directly to a doctor about it, JIC.

I have been lathering him in bepanthen today to see if that helps at all too.

Amber has really bad excema all over her, front and back, from her vagina all the way to the top of her forehead (including behind her ears and on her scalp). We are using hydrocortisone cream (Locoid) which we can only use for 7 days max, then 5 days break, then 7 days again etc etc. We also use another cream which helps to protect the skin from the steroids to stop the skin thinning (if that makes sense). Within a day or two of stopping the hydrocortisone, her excema is atrocious again. We are waiting for a paed appointment to do intolerance tests to figure out what is causing it, as both girls have had excema since almost birth, but it is getting horrendous now and keeps Amber awake at times.

Our wee one has terrible excema as well, and again all creams dont work. Interestingly she was put on steroids a week ago for bronchiolitus and magically her skin cleared up, but we're not keen to go down that path so have been luck enought o be referred to a skin specialist. Will let u know how it goes and any advice, plans they offer

My wee one has eczema too. We have a 1% hydrocortisone for him which our specialist said is safe to use anywhere except his eyelids. I think the micreme is an antifungal too though - I haven't used that on his face but have used another antifungal + hydrocortisone cream on his chin.

Good luck to everyone with eczema problems - I'm sure you all know but there is often a link to food allergies so hope you all manage to figure out what your children's are.

1st_Time_Preggies - presumably your son has started solids recently? Could be reacting to something? My son got eczema on his face from wheat around 7 months.

My DD (13months) has always had bad eczema when she was NB she had it very bad on her cheeks I spent hundreds on natural products and they would all help for about 3 days then they wouldn't do anything!
My GP said I was being ridiculous not using a steroid cream he said you can safely use it a couple of times a day every day if need be. I use a .5% for most areas and I've got a slightly stronger one for very bad patches. I really recommend it and I use the fatty cream for prevention...

Feel sorry for al these wee bubs suffering :( I know DH and I hated it when we had it as kids!

Thanks for all your advice everyone. I am using the steriod cream now, very sparingly. Hope it will clear up but so far (only day two) only mild improvement.

Auntie Sarah, yes he is on solids now, but has only had a few fruit and vegetables, and my GP reckons it is unlikely to be that.

we bath DS2 in pinetarsol every night, then slather him with fatty cream and put 0.5% Hydrocort on the particulary bad patches, then in the morning I slather him in aveeno baby soothing moisturiser, this seems to have helped a lot. With the steriod cream it needs to be put on 5-10 minutes before you put moisturiser on that area.

My DD gets eczema too. I use hydrocort in a burst type way (use for 3-4 days then a few days break then again until it clears) we are almost at the point where 1-2 application clears any patches.

Oats in the bath helps any itching as will pinetarsol or baking soda. I use Aveeno baby moisturiser too after every bath and have found that this is doing a great job at stopping dry patches and minimises flare ups. She was covered all over her chest and tummy with her worst patches behind her ears, knees and in the creases around her nappy. Now we just have by her ears and around where her nappy rubs if she's in a disposable.

Hey there

As an excema sufferer of 30 odd years I have had 1 % hydrocortisone on my body most of my life. Eyelids and all. I don't know about the thinning of the skin as I could have a complete body of thin skin but I don't notice any areas of thin skin. Also what are the reasons for concern of thin skin. Just curious if I am going to split open. lol. I have used it on my babies nappy rash before too. Only thing to clear it up after a bout of AB's and a horrendous rash.

For me I had a two year break from dairy at age 8-10 as that was my trigger. Now that I have got it under control I moisturise like crazy. Our whole family use dove beauty bar soap in the shower and we use sensitive persil soap powder. The laundry powder is essential and I definately can not use the cheaper brands like surf etc. My mum used to dissolve a grated sensitve bar of soap in hot water and make a jelly and use 1/2 cup of this jelly to wash my clothes until I was about 5.

My kids are all fine and dodged the excema, asthma and hayfever that both me and DH have (DH no excema but has the other two). Although they do get a bit itchy in the dry winter months however I am quick to moisturise with rosken skin repair.

I do feel for your kids as I have been there and done that. My thoughts are go hard on it with whatever the doctor prescribes if it works. I think thinning of the skin a bit has to be better than the constant itching and risk of infection that excema presents. Surely the excema breaks down the skin somewhat.   Once it is gone keep the natural barrier on their skin with a moisturising body wash and moisturiser. Get the allergy tests done as you can eliminate a trigger. 5 is a time when they can grow out of it and again at puberty. I got another big flare up during pregnancy too so hormones have something to do with it sometimes.

Ooh kiwi just reading your comment about the laundry detergent - I was using persil sensitive for my son too (would reacty to anything else) BUT I now make my own using a recipe from here really easy to make, sooo cheap (especially compared to persil) and washes clothes well. I would recommend it to anyone with sensitive skin.

Thanks everyone for your advice and stories! I have been using the 1% steriod creme for a few days now and it seems to be clearing it! I also lather him in fatty e cream at every opportunity. He hates it, but it is worth it for the result!!!!
