    Posted: 15 August 2010 at 10:01pm

So I had a really sore boob fri afternoon, went to after hours a couple of hours later with a fever and still sore boob despite feeding and emtying breast frequently, came home with antibiotics for mastitis lie i thought i would...

My question is is my milk on the infected side has gone yellowie, does this mean its getting better or doesnt mean much?

Also my supply on that side seems to have diminished, DD today has refused to feed on that side (possibly tasting funny since its yellow?) so Ive been expessing, but gtting like 10/20mls where I normally get 100+ mls... Is this just a coincidence? or should I be worried?

TIA

It can be temporary, or it can be permanent. Some breastfeeding mums end up drying up on one side because of mastitis - others (like me) have no problem with their baby accepting it once things are sorted - for me they got sorted quite quickly because I ended up in hospital on IV Antibiotics.

So just keep expressing and keep offering that side (first not second) to your baby and it will come right.

Try massaging your breast and putting warm cloths prior to expressing and also expressing in the shower.

Hmm, when I had mastitis and I had it for like 4 weeks or something, the milk was still looking the same (I ended up with abscess so was pretty bad)...I would maybe check with the Dr or ring the healthline to make sure it is okay. yellow to me sounds more like infected material coming out as well?? But I am not a nurse!
Maybe the blocked duct is stopping the flow so have you tried massaging gently towards the nipple while expressing, put a warm compress on before expressing too, both these help with the flow.

Good luck coz I know how crappy it is!

Yep Ive done the hot compress and massaging it out.  Im not sure if it helped, Ive poked and prodded my boob so much over the last couple of days that I cant tell if its got a lump and whether or not its a normal one!  If I do, then it hasnt grown and it hasnt got smaller either...  Ive had DD feed with her chin on the side where the lump is, but it hasnt helped either (if there is a lump)

Lol, I know the feeling, start to feel sorry for poor old boob ay!
Is it hurting less tho? If so then the antibiotics must be working....

Dont poke and prod ya boob too much as it will just get even sorer, just keep doing the hot compress and gently massage in downwards motions to the nipple all round your boob(in the shower is good) and then keep trying to feed Lilla off that side as baby feeding is one of the ebst things for it.

I got mastits after I stopped feeding Caden and massaging gently was the best thing.

Where the lump is just keep gently massaging, and if it doesnt go away then Id get that checked out hun as milk lumps will usually go away after some massaging.

Its not sore anymore, its a tiny bit tender, but wouldnt notice it if I wasnt feeling my self up every 5 mins

I have some 'lumps' in my other boob when its 'empty', so figured some bumps were normal, I just cant tell if this one is any more.  I havnt had a temp since Saturday night, boob isnt sore so ABs must be working right?

Im a little scared of not getting better and ending up in hospital again..  So over that place!

Thanks for the advice guys!

Have you actually checked the colour of your milk in the other boob? I found my milk colour changed as the composition changed and with different foods...

Mine had a yellow tinge so that was normal for me....

She might be fussing as the supply is a bit low but I would think if you keep offereing that breast first it should pick back up again..

Not sure about the rest as I was lucky enough to not get mastitis.

Hugs

Its def a different colour to the other boob, Ive expressed both sides (as figured if she wasnt taking one then I need all I can get out of the other) the infected side is noticably yellower than the other...  Havnt compared it today though

It's ok - sounds like you are on the mend. In terms of massaging - firm is better than gentle! I had a midwife do it for me in hospital and it was a bit painful but I'm sure it helped me to turn the corner.

Yip sounds like you are on the mend...just keep up the massage for a wee while after you finish the anitbiotics, I think I kept stroking towards nipple for about a month after I was so paranoid about it coming back. But if it is not hurting and you feel good then sounds positive!
Also if it was red before then if that has gone then that is a good sign too :-)
