So darling son (1) has never been the best solids eater, but went through phases of doing quite well.

Now, he refuses to eat solids. He cries when put in the high chair. He'll take a few bites of food then want out.

It started when he got rotavirus about 3 weeks ago. He's having about three bottles a day, and I'm trying to reduce those, but even with not having a bottle first, his solids intake isn't really increasing.

Any ideas? He won't eat off a spoon but is good with chewing etc.

How about snacks on the go? and then have him eat them picnic style on the floor. Or sitting on your knee. I would keep offering lots of small amounts often. Like fruit pieces, mini sammies, crackers etc

What about just offering him small amounts of what you are eating? H wasn't a great solids eater until I started just giving him bits of what I was having - say, bits of muffin at a cafe, or toast dipped in egg etc - and he loved it. Turned out he just didn't like baby food and prefers food with more flavour.

Don't make a big deal out of it, just say something like 'let's have lunch now' and feed him bits, and don't make a fuss if he won't eat - sometimes H is more of a drama queen them ore worked up I get about things!

Hope that helps x

My one year old's appetite goes up and down all the time. Drives me nuts but she's cool with it. Doesn't affect sleeping so I'm thinking she gets what she needs. The giving some of your food idea is great as they love to copy.

I have found that her one sign of teething is a reduced appetite, a few days of not much down then - there's a tooth.

Sometimes in desperate times we have resorted to putting tomato sauce on stuff and cheeky monkey laps up the food, goes against all my principles but it works a treat.

I'd say he's still recovering from the virus. Just cause he looks well on the outside his tummy might still be all up the wonk.

Don't force him, he'll come right in his own time, maybe get some probotics to help his tum heal? I presume that Rotavirus will do some not so nice stuff to his insides?

Thanks. I wasn't too worried but went to Plunket for our check and they said he wasn't eating enough, rah rah rah, and he'd only gained 100g in 3 or 4 months. I was so proud of him eating a whole yoghurt for lunch, but they said he should be eating much more!

A big bah hum bug to Plunket. Shoulda Woulda Coulda. Every baby is different Bec and as long as Alex looks and acts okay I would just go with the flow. Granted Ryan eats like a horse but he also loves to have his snacks on the go. I'll put some snacks on the floor and just let him go for it while he toodles around playing with his toys.

I agree with Mollycat about Plunket.
DD has never been a good eater and still isn't. She'll go through stages and will eat but not that often.
I think giving him a go on food you eat might help, DD will eat better if we are eating at the same time .
I'd keep up with the milk intake for a while and just see how he goes.

I have never had this problem, but a friend of mine did... when her ds got sick, she kinda reverted backwards and would only eat pureed foods... so you could try mushing the food up a bit more perhaps until he starts feeling better.
And I agree with previous comments about plunket!

The other day we gave Cooper one of those Only Organics squeezy packs, but let him suck it out and squeeze it himself. He loved it! He even sucked back the kumara and apple one, and it's hard to get much in the way of veges into him so we were pretty impressed and I went and bought a bunch of vege kinda flavours.

The only thing is the top is a small part and says potential choking hazard on the back, so I guess it's not what you're meant to do, but if you're supervising probably ok

Another idea is to just let him have finger food and play with food again. DS is currently off his food for the most part but will often accept it if it's him feeding himself. He's been sick for two weeks so that's why he's not into it. It's very frustrating!!!

Ummm did they not think that being sick with the Rotavirus would have made him lose a reasonable amount of weight!!

Maybe up his milk (bottle or boob) to help him get some good nutrients in to him.
