What do you do with a child that wakes up tired?
Last night my DD woke at 1.30-big feed, back to sleep. 4.30-mini feed, back to sleep. 7-mini feed, back to sleep half an hour after going down- was just talking to herself. She then decided to wake at 8.45 after only having 45mins. I left her for 5mins to try to get her to resettle, she just got wound up. So i got her up and she was super tired. Yawning, stretching, rubbing eyes, jerky movements. So I offered her my breast, she had half a dozen sucks, then changed her and put her back to bed. She grizzled and grizzled and grizzled for an hour! I went in about every 10minutes and patted and shushed her and she shut up almost instantly, but went back to grizzling once i left. Finally I ended up rocking her to drowseyness and she went of to sleep. She does this all week, then in the weekend she is PERFECT and DF doesnt believe me when I say how difficult she has been. Night sleep is no issue, she has always been great, settles herself easily. Anyone have any ideas?

I had a shocking day sleeper too and found a hammock really good for helping to settle easier. I think you can hire them if you want to try before you buy?   I just loaned it to my friend who has a baby with reflux and her baby is finally sleeping during the day without her having to drive around in the car!

Otherwise I used to carry Cooper in the sling or go for lots of walks.

Funny about the weekends though, can you write down everything you do on the weekend eg timings of feeds/sleeps/ways she goes to sleep/outings and see if there's something you do differently on those days?

I tried white noise yesterday for the first time. found free mp3 online...was like flicking a switch....DD calmed instantly and fell off to sleep in her bassinet. Vacuum worked too - only it was too noisy for me to tolerate!

I do absoloutely nothing different on the weekend, we always start the day whenever she wakes up, and if she wakes up tired the whole day is just stuffed. It is very draining trying to get a baby to sleep. Im not much of a walker, and half the time she wont go to sleep! Grrrrr at least she is good at night i suppose

Aethalia DS has been a shocking day sleeper since day one - although he has been a fantastic night sleeper since he was very young so I just went with it!

However, we use a mobile for his day sleeps now, have you tried that? He LOVES it and gets excited when I put him down lol. It goes for 15 mins and he is usually asleep in the first 5-10 mins.

We also only used to wrap at night, until recently and tried wrapping during the day as well and he is sleeping a lot better.

Edited to make sense

My DS was, and still pretty much is, a terrible day sleeper. If he sleeps for an hour that pretty good!

Could it be that you are more relaxed on the weekend with DF home and bubs is picking up on that?

Our problem early on was no routine and once we got that sorted it was a bit easier. DS is also very nosey and likes to see whats going on. We took down his mobile and moved everything out of his line of vision. Now hes a bit older he loves the mobile but it was too much for him when he was younger.

My DD does this sometimes too, although its early days for her yet. I was trying to stick to the routine of Sleep, Feed, Play & Sleep - but with her waking after only a short nap she wouldn't be hungry and would still be tired. So I persevere with the settling techniques until the next feed time rolls around. Somedays this means up to 2 hours of grizzling - then I feed, change, couple of minutes play, and she will reset and go back down for her nap. Making her wait for the feed means she is properly hungry, which then means she feeds better and sleeps better the next time she goes down.

Just re-read your post, and realised that all this doesn't really help any - except to say I'm in the same boat! Also, I find she is better on the weekends when DH is home - mostly cos she loves to fall asleep in his arms, and he loves to let her!

it sounds like she's only snacking and then only snoozing. You need to try getting a long sleep so she is rested and then spacing the feeds further apart so she has a good big feed. Full tummy should mean longer sleep, but the 45 min thing is pretty common too. They go through a 45 min phase and it could just be that, but they don't usually sleep for long if snacking. Then too tired to feed, and too hungry to sleep and you're stuck in a vicious circle.

I remember having issues with DS between about 3 and 6 months and it used to drive me crazy.  Both my kids have been great at night but every so often have issues during the day.

Have you come across the Sleep Store website?  I have always found it really useful for helping me think through any sleep issues.  There are articles for every stage of development and almost every sleep issue.  I think the website is www.thesleepstore.co.nz but if you google Sleep Store it will come up.

I remember those days like it wasn't 18 months ago at all!

We used the hairdryer on cool with one of us hidden to settle him to sleep, and occasionally white noise, and then when it was coming up to 45mins since he fell asleep (the magic 45 min sleep cycle) I'd occasionally stand by his bassinette and literally pick up one end to give it a good deep rocking motion. sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't!! The idea was to help him learn to SELF-settle and also to sleep through more than one sleep cycle.

Our iPod is on an iBass and we put the same sleepy music track from the end of the Baby Jazz CD on loop. That has helped and although his 2nd birthday is looming, we still do it. crazy huh!
