So DS almost 12 months has been down with a stomach bug since Wednesday night and is still vomiting with diaroeha (?). He's been to the docs today and wasn't dehydrated enough to go on a drip this morning, but is still vomiting pretty much everything and isn't having many wet wee nappies - just the big D. My question is, how long can this go on for? I'm scared of seeing him like this for this length of time as he is looking gaunt and not like himself.

Whats he eating/drinking? Daniel would puke up all food so our doc told us for 24hrs just to give fluids only to give his tummy some time to recover and then after that he was only on rice bubbles for all his meals for a couple of days and then banana, took ages for his bowels to come right and had to reintroduce everything slowly.

He's pretty much only having water and a wee bit of formula... we tried solids on day two (a wee bit of pear and a slice of dry toast) but it was vomited back up and then again on day four (a wee bit of banana and a wee bit of pear) but the same result. Today he hasn't had any solids just a mix of water and formula but he's vomited that all up. To complicate matters he won't touch anything with a hint of juice/pedialyte etc.

I don't want to keep going back to the doctors as was left today feeling like a right twat.

I would just go to A&E tbh, it doesn't sound nice and not many wet nappies isn't a good sign right?

On the back of the Plunket book it says to get help if they are vomiting at least half of their feed after each of the last 3 feeds, has vomiting and diarrhea together, has passed less urine, drunk less fluid...

Like the above poster mentioned, it's scary but best to get help quickly.

Is he getting plenty of fluids?

We had to give just water in small amounts, as in a sip or two at a time pretty much all day. Milk was a no go. If he had lots of water it came straight back up, we couldn't give anything with milk in it for a week or so could it just made the most foul nappies. It does result in a hungry bub though, but we just did that for 24hrs. But Daniel is older so maybe ask healthline if that would be ok to try before giving it a go if you want to.

DD didn't have a tummy bug but refused any fluids for four days when she was 8 months old. I had to forse feed her pediayte with a syringe.

Maybe if you try that, but very little at the time, start with 5ml every 5 min for a while to see how you go.

Give health line a call to see what they think. If I were you I would take him back to the doctor.
And you are not a twat, you know your child better then anyone else so don't let the doctor make you feel bad, it's his job to help you.

Good luck and hope your wee man is feelig better soon.

Aw Bec, poor wee boy. I'm not sure what I would do, definitely little and often on the liquids and pedilyte through a syringe might be worth a try. Ring healthline and see what they say, I know we were saying about trying to keep them out of hospital if you possibly can, hopefully you can get some fluids to stay down.

I really hope he's on the mend soon!

Healthline will just tell you to take the advice of your GP if you have seen them in the last 24hrs unless his condition has worsened.

This article is quite good:

Article

If he's not tolerating sips of water or Pedialyte every 5-10mins (you can try the food they mention in the article but if he doesn't take it or just vomits it up stick to fluids) or his wet nappies are significantly less or he's becoming weak, you need to go and get urgent medical attention and get him on a drip etc. You can also check for dehydration by looking at how much saliva is in their mouth. If he has a fever, that will also make him more dehydrated - so keep the fever down.

Kids get dehydrated quickly so keep an eye on him - poor thing!!!
