Currently my DD is sleeping even worse than usual because she has such a snotty nose, and then I'm taking an hour or so (that I really really can't spare!) to get back to sleep after each waking because I'm coughing so much.

Any bright ideas of things I can do to help her coughing and congestion, and to help with my coughing. I'm BF, and the chemist didn't want to sell me anything on that basis

3 hours sleep is not enough to go to work on!!

I saw this on someones facebook and stole the idea and its brilliant. Put a crock pot of water and some vicks in it and leave it on in the room all night.

My mum is a big fan of vicks on feet and that does seem to help too. We just put a layer of vaseline on first.

We are having the same problem and we have a vaporiser which is fantastic. We also use vicks on the bottom of DS's feet and on a tissue down the front of his top during the day.

The heard about the crockpot idea too which is supposed to work great.

Our vaporiser doesn't stain or wet the walls but yes the steam does make the room feel very wet and the windows run so we have the dehumidifier on all the next day and we've never had any issues.

I assume the crockpot would do the same thing

The window is quite wet in the morn but the walls aren't. We just air it out really well and wipe down the windows in the morn

Stupid question - but do you leave the lid on or off?

I leave it on with a teeny gap for the steam to go out

I think I might be the one who suggested the crock pot for coughing that Kebakat is talking about I use it with no lid on and a teaspoon of vicks, its seems to make less steam than the vapouriser (I borrowed one once) and I just wipe the windows down in the morning then put the dehumidifier on and let some fresh air in as well at the warmest part of the day. I just make sure I take the crock pot out of the room as soon as DD is up so she cannot touch it.

Vicks on the feet works really well here too, and a we also have a small oil heater on low to keep the temp at about 18 or so.

saline drops up the nose for baby works well. Can get it at chemist or on percription but is really expensive so we make our own. Got recipe from internet.!

1 cup of cooled boiled water 1/4 teaspoon of salt. mix well. just put 2 or 3 drops in each nostril. Can be done every 4 hours. but we don't do it that often only once or twice a day. works wonders.Store for 24 hours then throw away, make more if needed.

heaters good too in the room and vicks baby balm is great too.

For you: the honey propalis( can't spell but it's the honey ones!) throath lozenges from cornvita are fab and safe for BF.

my kids where in hospital at 2 mnths with severe broncilities and RSV (respitory virus) they gave us loads of saline drops (still have some) but we got told to use them whenever we needed as it is only water so no harm...all it does is make them sneeze so the boogers come out.......as they both had to be suctioned .

I fill it almost to the top and put in a tsp of vicks or a few drops of karvol, then put it on high no lid. And yes its okay for dinner the next day but the vicks sticks to the sides so you have to wipe it all out then give it a good wash...and vicks sticks to your scrubbing brush so def wipe it out first.

I second the Karvol. They did wonders for DD's stuffy nose. I didn't get anything out of her nose with saline drops as it was all in her nasal passages. The Karvol drops are really strong. Put a tissue full in your room too.
