Anyone watch 60 Minutes last night? One of the stories was about 2012 - encouraging people to be prepared.

One guy they interviewed about the 'End Times' theory said people either believe: This can happen. That'll never happen. Or hey - when did that happen?

Personally, I haven't made up my mind about which camp I sit in, but the story did make me feel a bit guilty.  As a parent of two young children, living on the West Coast of the South Island, I know I should be more prepared for a natural disaster.  After all, a major earthquake along the Alpine Fault could happen at any time.  Yes, we have enough food in the pantry to last a few weeks, and I occassionally remember to bottle some water, but that's about it.

So what steps have you taken to prepare your family for the unexpected??

We have a CD kit in the garage with our important docs in a ziplock bag, games, food, catfood, clothes, tarp etc. Everything except nappy stuff as I would take the nappy bag.

Only problem is some of the stuff expires this year (like the water) so it's almost time to replace it. Plus we don't have as much water as we should (because you are meant to have a lot)

I find the end of the world disasters a bit ridiculous.
Our main risk is flooding and being without drinking water - this happened back in 2004 and we had been away for the weekend and had a mostly empty fridge and pantry.
We've water in the hot water cylinder.  Enough pasta and rice to last a week, plenty of meat if the power goes off.  We've got a couple of rashun packs from DH's work. I always have flour which I can use to make bread if necessary.
We've the BBQ with a reasonaby full gas cylinder, plenty of torches and blankets.

This issue is more if I'm not home, ie: at work or out - as last time most of the main roads into Palmy and some of Feilding were cut off.   Our home is on a hill and safe enough. The world really will have ended if the water ever gets that high.

Eftpos was down at the services station and we were without running water for 3 days. Luckily I was able to get a hot shower at DH's work - being Air Force has its benefits.
Schools and kindys were closed as a result of the water issue - it was tougher on parents having to entertain kids for a week and having to take time off work for that period.

oh yes I should say it's not due to end of world stuff that we're organised. Rather the seemingly constant CD alerts for tsunami's that have been happening the last year (we'd be in the evac area if it happened at high tide)

The main consequence of natural disaster I found was being without water and power, our property wasn't directly effected. We did experience power cuts, and we were without running water for a couple of days, and the town sewage system got washed away.

Schools and kindys being closed for a week would have been the other major impact on the most people.
With Eftpos not working either due to power failure - no money, and who carries cash these days?

Some people did get their homes flooded, Dh and his work mates had to go help out and he said the smell of dirty water going through drawers of clothes was revolting, and the smell of sticky mud.

I have nothing. Althou I keep my pantry pretty well stocked so I should be fine if anything was to happen. I keep water in the fridge if anything was to happen and we have a hot water cylinder and a thing in the roof full of water so we have water.

The boys both have a bag that has at least 2 sets of clothes in it as their going away bag so that would come with us. All our documents are in a box that is easily picked up and taken with us.

I can't see anything happening in 2012 to be honest.

When the Manawatu had the floods in 2004 I wasn't affected but my family was. We let them use our place to do things and the only burdon we had was not enough hot water lol.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I couldn't get to work in the 2004 floods as the roads were flooded leading into Palmerston North and parts of Feilding were closed off. I was living in Bulls at the time and couldn't get to Wanganui either, parts of Marton were flooded too.

There were people from Scotts Ferry living in the Town Hall for ages.

Im not afraid of the world ending, but i have been trying to prepare for a natural disaster.

I have canned food, only about 25 at a time but i try replace them as i use them. I have 12L of water which isnt that much, i might buy some more next shopping day.

I make sure our gas bottle is always full so we can have gas heating or use the BBQ to cook if needed.

I have alot of spare blankets & pillows.

I make sure i always have heaps of nappies, i never let myself get to the last few of disposables.

Thats about all i have, i need to look at my checklist again.

Im always freaking out wondering when the big quake will hit Wellington

We are not prepared at all. it's one of those things that we have talked about but never got around to doing.

Food wise I think we'd be ok, as I do tend to overstock on some items

I guess now that we live on the beach we probably should give ourselves a kick up the bum and get organised.

Not sure how I feel about the world supposedly ending in 2 years... I guess if it's going to happen, it will and there will be nothing anyone can do about it...

People have been saying the world is going to end for millenia, and it hasn't. If it does can't exactly do much about it can I.

I'm a bit meh about the whole 2012 thing. I'm a bit meh about the natural disaster thing too, but mainly because I live right next door to a very well equipped early childhood centre, and literally a minutes walk from the very well equipped for many people inlaws.

I think water is a key thing and is something we have a lot of since a water main burst in our street one morning and we didn't even have any water to make a cup of tea. It just takes something small like that to make you realise how unprepared you are!

After watching that mocumentary they did on earthquake in Wellington, its being away from home that worrys me most. As I won't be able to reach Dh and if eftpos / atms are down won't have any money.
Most supermarkets only have milk and bread supplies for a couple of days, and most of that comes from Akl. We've had instances of trucks being unable to get throu the dessert road.
Being caught up in a natural disaster - made me realise how unprepared we were and how even minor disruptions can have a big impact.

while i am all for having supplies if something happens ( i think most of us would have resonable supplies just with whats in our kitchen cupboards, freezer, fridge etc) the whole emergency thing relies on being able to access your supplies thats not guarenteeed in any natural disaster.

Also concerned about all the fires open, mulitfuel etc being encouraged to be pulled out and use heat pumps. What happens if the power goes out at least if you have a fire you have a heat source and something to cook on too. They can't tell me that it doesn't happen look at what happened to inland canterbury a few years back in the middle of winter after a heavy snowfall many had no power for a few days.

Someone freaked me out the other day when they said "what about the kids, who gets them if they are at Daycare". I hadn't even though of that.

DH and I now know that I go to the kids and then on to my Mums and he meets me there.

I don't have a survival pack as such but keep a fairly well stocked pantry, a full gas bottle on the BBQ, and have candles, lighters, torches and batteries around. Documents are kept in one drawer so easy enough to grab in an emergency.

We were living in Palmy during the 2004 floods.  I only noticed something was amiss when biking to work over the Manawatu River and seeing a huge railway container floating downstream .  Freaky how such a relatively small amount of rain could cause so much flooding (we regularly experience worse rainfall on the West Coast).  It was eye-opening seeing how unprepared and disorganised people were .... DH worked on the local radio station and had to try to sift through conflicting reports from Civil Defence/Council/Police etc as to which roads were open or closed etc.

Bobbie, it sounds like you're well prepared .  Must check out the Civil Defence website and start getting organised.  We live pretty much at sea level too.

Peanut - that's a good point about who would collect the kids.  Do you have a back-up plan just in case you can't get to them for some reason?

Hey, does anyone own one of those wind-up torches that doesn't require batteries?  That's something I've been meaning to buy for a long time ...

The thing I remember about that mockumentary about the Wellington earthquake is that people who were prepared were getting robbed by people who weren't. So I don't know if being well prepared is an asset or an invitation to get your head blown off.

I was living in Feilding with my parents during the 2004 floods. We were lucky in that we have always done a lot of camping so had a heap of things stocked up for that, we did get off fairly lightly, the garage and two rooms off the garage were flooded, but we had no running water or power for a long time. My parents have a generator though so that kept us going, along with the BBQ and we showered at family friends for the week. We lived on one of the main roads into Feilding and was heaps of fun seeing army trucks, fire trucks and CD vehicles driving through the river.

The only thing that we ended up needing was water. Was interesting when we could eventually get into town and seeing all the stocks that weren't in the stores, bread, milk and water.

We don't have any plan for if something like this were to happen, we do have a few odd bits and pieces around from camping that we could use, but yeah things like water we would need to stock up on

my survival kit involves a portable camp cooker but no gas cylinders and our spare blankets and photo albums/passports etc being kept up high but thats about it. I keep meaning to get everything together and put it in the loft in a couple of water proof bins but never get round to it. I always have heaps of food in the house and a large amount of alcohol come to think of it but the biggest risk here is another flood so just having our valubles high is the major cos if it floods it will be half way up the walls - well thats where the house has its scars from the last time (1984). If for some crazy reason we were stuck in the house because of a freak snow storm I know DP has a generator i guess if it came down to it our place is pretty well set up that we could improvise and get by without having a kit set up as such
