So now that I have gone back to work, hubby and I have decided that we will start each having sanity money again, just wondering how many other people do this, what sort of amount do you have each week, and what has to be included in this, like lunches etc?
And how do you do it, do you get it out on payday or do you just leave it in the account and spend up to your sanity limit??
Its been so long since we did this im not sure what will work best.

We have sanity money but the amount varies depending on the week!

We get it out in cash once a week (DH is paid weekly) and I find that much easier than spending up to the limit on eftpos/credit, I find that when I have cash I'm less likely to spend it willy nilly because I can see exactly what I have left.

DF is paid monthly, he keeps sanity money for him self, transfers same to my acc and the rest goes to the house acc to cover bills, morgage, food etc, kid stuff comes out of this acc.
sanity money for us covers anything that we want/need that isnt brought in the food shop so if we want to buy lunch when there is food at home, its our money, same goes for clothes etc, anything we need/want really

We have $25 each a week - for lunches, coffees, snacks, library fines in my case , haircuts, clothes .... We also have a budget line called "household" which covers things like the doctor, chemist, some of my haircut, bigger clothes stuff, couples meals out (ha, the 2x a year when they happen!), Dan's haircuts, nappies, clothes.

Ours is conscience ruled, but we have our budget on the fridge and when we spend stuff we write it up - we've found it the easiest way to keep track of what we're spending rather than it being a "fess up" thing.

We had $60 a week each, but then tightened up to $60 a fortnight because we were not making much financial headway.  If DH wants to buy booze or buy Lotto, then it comes out of that money.  It's also great when you want to make a secret purchase like buying DH a present.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Ours is $25 a week, which only includes personal spending, no takeaways, nights out together, clothes (except for splurges, but necessities are taken care of) and anything else we agree on. It's purely spending money.

We have our sanity accounts loaded onto our Savings buttons on our Eftpos cards and I transfer the amount fortnightly along with our petrol money. If DH needs more for work (they often spring things on them at the last minute) he pays from our normal account and we decide later on if he needs to pay it back.

We'd like more, but we've just increased it from $20 each a week now I'm working more so we feel rich lol

Gosh better not let DH see this... ours is teeny compared to you guys BUT things are very tight right now and we are trying to stay afloat....

Ours covers coffees (me), beers (DH), lunches ... essentials are budgeted into our savings account. We both have our own accounts that our spending money is put into each fortnight and if special occassions are coming up then our gift amount is transfered in a month or so before hand...

Ours is $50.00 per week .. I transfer it over each payday into our respective savings accounts so we have eftpos access to our own money.

It covers any luxury items ... going to the movies, DH like to have coffee on campus so that comes out of his own money, and pressies for each other .. and other "crap" that isnt covered in our budget, like games for DH, my fitness magazines etc.

It doesnt cover beer as that is in the groceries or clothes, shoes, haircuts etc .. that all comes out of household expenses.

I did it .. 41 kgs gone! From flab to fab in under a year LFs weight blog

Ours is $50 each per week. It's only for lunches during the week and going to the pub. Everything else fits into different budget categories.

ETA: to answer your second question, we draw ours out as cash every Monday. That way we always know how much we have left.

Mine is $100 a fortnight out of this I pay for my cellphone, lunches I generally only buy lunch once a week, the rest I get from the supermarket. Neither of us drink.
Gifts / laybys we have a lot of birthdays in September and towards the end of the year so I try to set up laybys etc and stretch it out.

I have my wages split between my own eftpos account and the rest goes into the joint account to cover bills etc.

I have an extra $100 for food and petrol.

we have 10 dollars a week - this is purely for our own extra bits and bobs and doesn't cover clothing, eating out together etc because we have that in another part of our budget. My hubby doesn't struggle with this cause he hardly uses it! and i'm fine when i remind myself about our financial goals! he he. We do have it easier because we don't drink, smoke or play lotto!
