Topic: When to start using a pillow? Posted: 08 June 2010 at 5:22pm |
My toddler is nearly 17 months old, still sleeping in a cot. When should we give her a pillow to sleep on? (Once she moves into a bed...?)

Neither of my girls use their pillows, the both have them but sleep below them. The oldest is almost 5.
You could probably try giving her a small thin pillow and see how she takes it, I wouldn't worry about it too much yet though.

My MW said, they're old enough for a pillow when they're old enough to ask for one.

My boy has been on a pillow since 6 months to prop him higher.
I would give one when they start using the throw pillows or when they go into a big bed.

I wont be giving DD one until she is in a big bed.
They dont need a pillow & its safer without one.

Jake went into a big bed about 19months, and we put one along the side (more so he knew where the edge was) for the first few months. From about 2 we put it at the end of the bed (under his head) but he quite often slept down the side of it. Hes 3 this month and he still doesn't always sleep on it.

Caden had a pillow from about 10-11 months, but he never really used it.
These days he sleeps with the pillow over his head

We started using a pillow for DS at about 16 months, as we had been told that using a pillow teaches them to sleep in one spot, rather than adventuring around the cot, so it is good prep for a big bed. We found it worked perfectly, and within 2 weeks he went from sleeping any which way he possibly could (some times he would even hang his legs out between the bars so he could sleep sideways) to sleeping in one position all night. We havent had any issues with him falling out of his big bed, except for the very first night. He now loves his pillow, and brings it into our bed in the mornings to snuggle!!
