Topic: cold wet days Posted: 08 June 2010 at 2:45pm |
Winters here along with those wet cold crappy days.
What are some ideas for those with toddlers who have so much energy to burn but are stuck inside and get bored way too easy?
Im a mum of two girls who are 2 & 7months,
would love to chat with other mums who have children of similar ages, and those who have ideas of what they do with their child/ren on those wet days when stuck inside

sigh, I can relate!
We went to Junglerama this moring (indoor play place).
Swimming is another option - my girls are the same age, but if you go with a friend who can help, you can manage all the kids between you.
At home - baking, playdough, puzzles, drawing.
TV when you've had enough! I've always limited the TV watching, but had a bit more recently with all the rain - Hi5 or similar at least gets them up and dancing, and with Dora and Diego type things she is learning a bit. The other day I realised she had learned the names of all the colours in Maori from kidzone
I'm going to join the toy library too get a few more toys to keep us entertained.

We go out every morning to playgroups, pram walking group, preschool gymnastics etc and that takes the edge off. Unless it is absolutely pouring down I let him play outside once we get home. If its wet outside but no longer raining I let C run around in his undies and a polyprop or polarfleece so he's warm but the wet doesn't bother him. On cold days I just rug him up and let him play outside anyway. He jumps in puddles, skids on his knees on wet grass, and his swing, slide and seesaw dry off the first time he uses it anyway. Cold is less messy than wet.
If the rain sets in and we've already been to playgroup or somewhere and he's still full of beans we usually head for a child friendly cafe, go for a long walk around a mall, or go swimming or to the library.
At home he gets the squabs off the couch, foot stool and coffee table and makes his own obstacle course or rides his ride on bike around. Otherwise he likes to jump off the coffee table onto me for hours on end. By about mid afternoon he can sit still long enough for blocks, cars, drawing etc. If they are happy to be inside but just need entertaining you can do playdough, puzzles, duplo, dancing to music, reading stories etc.

Hi ladies
thanks for all your ideas,
With my 2yo already do the following:
*draw with chalk on her big chalk board,
*draw/write with pencils on paper*
*play with play dough & wev tried playing with different baking mixes she enjoyed that this arvo
*iv had puzzles out, although i think im going to need some younger aged ones then the ones she has, all she was intrested in was tiping the peices out of the packing an onto tip the next lot out wasnt at all intrested.
*we do the whole counting numbers & alphabet learning
*& she has a whole toy room of toys to play with/ride on
She also has a play house which i guess would be similar to building a fort inside?
she gets very bored quickly and finds it hard to sit still shes a very on the go wee girl with soo much energy to burn.
she absolutely loves the tv & movies this is the one thing that really keeps her entertaind and she can sit still with however with movies she insists that they be changed every few minutes, whether its the whole fun of taking them in and out of cases im not sure lol.
DJ - How are you finding it with the two girls? i see theyr bout just over 2yrs apart? my girls are 21months apart.

My DS1 loves to line up all of his cars/trucks/boats/motorbikes in a big long train and then we count them. Takes a while to makes sure we've found every single car etc, and then he sits at the front and pretends to 'drive' the train.
We often sing and dance to music (or zumba )
Baking
Reading
Puzzels
If its not too wet or cold, then we go for a walk around the block.
Play indoor soccer.
Painting
Hit a balloon around with an empty handy towel roll
Make forts/tunnels
Have a teddy bear picnic
Educational computer games
Play chase, but instead of just running around, we crawl, do the bear walk, jump etc
That's all I can think of for now. Hope some of this helps!

Here's what I do with Jackson, he's 2
- Go to McDonalds and play at the indoor playground (I just grab myself a coffee)
- I buy the budget dried spagetti and he loves sliding them into my coffee warmer thingee (it has a small hole at the top) he also uses them as pick up sticks, or eats them, or they end up all over the floor after a fight with them
- His little tikes car indoors.. I have the spray and wipe container with just water in it and he sprays it/pretends to wash it
- I bake, and give him a small bowl with dried macaroni to mix around to keep him entertained
- Rugby indoors
-Balloons
- Take all the cushions off the couch and turn the lounge into a gym.. he loves that!

There are a few thigns I keep aside for rainy days ina wee box in the laundry.
Balloon volleyball is good here (a couple of balloons) then when that is over, or even before, I draw all over the balloons for them, they love it
I keep crayola washable felts for rainy days (normally its just crayons/pencils also craft scissors, different coloured paper and stickers (as oppsed to colouring books and plain paper) Sellotape goes down well
Also the old standbys like
Lego/blocks
Train set
hotwheels/city car mat
DVD's as opposed to playhouse disney

It's ok! My girls are 23mths apart. I love the interaction between the 2 of them - there is nothing like the sound of them laughing together The small one screams a version of her big sister's name when she sees her which is very cool - no Mum mum or dad dad for her!

making the fort is much of the fun. depending on your floor you could draw pics/hopscotch on it with chalk (works great on wood/concrete floors). Scavenger hunt around the house with prizes.

We get LOTS of wet days, not so much of the cold though. Except for thunderstorms I still take C outside to play or let him out in the front yard while I read under the verandah or join in if he wants me too.
Lots of the things we do have already been mentioned. If I feel like we need to get out of the house we'll go to a cafe for a fluffy and toast and then walk round the mall, find an indoor playground to burn off some energy. Impromtu playdates with friends (we're lucky there's lots of young families in our neighbourhood so sometimes we just visit the neighbours coz there's always someone around!). Once the rain has stopped we go out for walks, go to the playground or just for a ride on the train. C gets a huge thrill from being allowed to sit on the seat instead of staying in his pram

Second the bath!!! Jake spends a good hour or 2 in the bath. I regularly top it up with hot water and more bubbles and he has bath pens and stuff.
I find hes into changing the dvds constantly too so I just stick him in front of the computer now and put short youtube clips on - jousting (hes into knights!), veggietales, pixar clips, etc and he gets 15 minutes at a time then hes got to go do something else which I find good coz it gives him and me quiet time each hour through the late morning (he has an hour outside every morning after breakfast) and it means less tv time overall coz its only 2-3hrs from when he comes inside til lunch then naptime (yay lol) which means about 45 minutes of 'tv' each day.
Other than that its mostly what everyone else has suggested!

This last weekend when it was cold and wet, we stayed home and:
made huts and went on bear hunts with the torch (in the middle of the day )
had a bear tea party
went "shopping" with the plastic food
made gingerbread animals and got DS to help stir the mixture and ice them (and the floor )
puzzles
playdoh
stories
a fun filled weekend for all

Our favourite thing to do is to get dressed up, turn up the music and DANCE!
We do a lot of craft, drawing, glueing, painting.
Playdoh.
Baking
Taking photos.
Making our own Hot chocolates and fluffies and watching the rain.
Facepainting (although I have to use warm water in winter :P )
Wrap up warm and walk to the beach and the park (so different on a winters day)
If I get really desperate for some quiet time we pull out the computer games and DVD's
We don't tend to out much as I haven't driven before but occasionally we would catch the bus up to the mall and library.
