Jamie is starting to refuse his afternoon sleep!

His morning sleep is usually pretty good.   I get between 1.5 and 3 hours out of him and he goes down easy enough.    I put him down about 1.5 to 2 hours after he wakes in the morning.

However, it is taking me an hour or more to settle him for his afternoon sleep and he wakes up less than 40 minutes later.    I have tried putting him down earlier and later and have had no success at all.   He's not hungry and he's been burped and changed, so I'm not really sure what he is doing!    He unwraps himself, rolls over, kicks the blankets off, yells out but doesn't scream or cry.

For example, today he woke from his morning sleep at 12:30PM, had milk and then solids, played for a while and then had a top up feed at about 2PM.   Put him down about 2:15, and he mucked around until 3:45. He woke again at 4:20PM, and is impossible to resettle.   It's quiet now, but it won't last!

He's not even 6 months old yet so surely he needs this sleep!   He's becoming very overtired in the evenings and will scream uncontrollably at bedtime, but thankfully and finally he will sleep for about 4 hours, feed, change and sleep for another 6-7 hours.

Oh and sometimes if he does have an earlier afternoon sleep, he will have another quick catnap at about 5PM, but only for half an hour or so.

Any ideas? I feel like Sam is missing out on me in the afternoons because all I'm doing is trying to get Jamie to sleep!

I find that Esme fights her afternoon sleep if I let her sleep too long in the morning. I try and get her up after 2 hours then in the afternoon I will keep her up until she shows that she is tired. He might need to stay up a bit longer.

Sometimes she will do a short sleep so if she looks like she won't make it til bed I'll try putting her down for a short nap before her bedtime routine.

Good luck as it is sooo hard when they don't sleep.

At this age Plunket told me no longer than 2 hours in the morning and no longer than 1 hour in the afternoon. Then you have a reasonble day and also a decent night sleep.

Wow! H does this now and there is no way he could have coped with 3 hours day sleeps at 5 months!

At 5-6 months H was still having 3 day sleeps and then 7pm-6.30am overnight... the last nap was a bit of a struggle - we used to go on lots of walks in the afternoons! Could you take both the boys out and have the baby sleep in the buggy while Sam plays?

yep - i'd wake after 2 hours in the morning. maybe also look at how long he's up for before going back to bed. if i have trouble setting for sleeps. In my base   it usually means that she's grown up a bit and can last a bit longer. Can also mean is over tired too - so hard to know which.
