Just wondering if anyone has had a vbac and been allowed to be induced?

I've been told that I won't be allowed to go overdue as induction is too risky if you've had a c-section. This worries me a little as I know it is normal to go overdue as the dates are always and estimate. I really want a natural birth this time so would love to hear from those of you who have been in this position.

Thanks in advance

I wonder what they mean as surely wouldn't need to be induced until 10 days or whatever?? I would have thought they would allow you to wait until then to try for vbac and then you would need to just go for c sect...but I don't actually have a clue haha!

I *think* they don't do induction cause labour can be "harder" ie faster stronger contractions rather than building in to the strong contractions & that can rupture your scar?

I think they will sometime do certain types of induction but not others (e.g. may do prostaglandin but not synto .... or the other way around). I think mamanee may have been induced with #2?

OK, according to Dr Google, they don't like prostaglandin (higher risk of dissolving scar tissue and not able to be reversed) or synto inductions (inducing strong contractions), but do consider Foley catheter inductions (some info here). I'm pretty sure that's what one of the girls had - yup, see here for Renee's thread before it was done.

No they don't generally do inductions and they don't do syntocin as labour can be stronger and increase your risk of rupture. Instead you'll be offered a date, most likely around 41 weeks, for an elective c-section therefore giving you the chance to go into labour yourself.

My mw told me its case by case.. they dont like to do it but you can get it signed off by an OB if they think its acheiveable.

As for being overdue, they cant MAKE you have a section and you will discuss all this when you meet the specialist at 36 (ish) weeks.

At the moment (given all is well with me and baby) I will be refusing and elective and waiting until 40+10 and if they wont induce then I will have an elective. As Paws said, most will be ok booking you in for an elective at 41 weeks to let you give you time to go naturally.

I was upfront from day one with my MW though and she is very pro VBAC so that helps.. though of course baby and mine health is still the foremost important thing

I was to meet the ob on my due date and discuss when to book a c-section, (luckily I went into labour before this) usually they like to do it a week after your due date, but as melnel said they can't make you so you could go up to 2 weeks over if you really wanted, providing there is nothing wrong going on.
There are some obs that will do a prostigladin induction here in Tauranga, but you will be monitored pretty heavily.
Good luck, I hope things go well for you

Yeah I went 10 days over with number 2 and was to be induced.   My first c-section was an elective for breech presentation so my midwife was fairly confident that it would be like a first labour and going overdue wouldn't really matter.    I didn't really agree and wanted him out as soon as possible after my due date, but he wasn't interested in making an appearance then.    As the thread I started said, the foley cathetar was the route they were going to take to induce me, although it only works if you are about 0-2CM dilated. I was already 4CM by the time I got there, so breaking my waters was the next step. (Midwife refused because she was a mean hippy).   All in all, I wasn't induced at all, other than a stretch and sweep ath the hospital, which put me into labour a few hours later.   26 horrific hours later I was 6CM, exhausted, not dilating properly, and begged for a c-section, which I got.   Hopefully you get your VBAC though, and there are options for you to deliver naturally if you go overdue.

I was actually offered a synto drip when i had my VBAC as i stalled at 5cms for about 6hrs, i fully refused it and got the epidural instead lol. Generally they wont induce but will try and help labour along, breaking of waters or stretch and sweep but i hate the stuff about you have to have the baby by this date or we will book you in for an elective! With my 2nd VBAC i went 18 days overdue (by scan date) and i refused a NST at the hospital and birthed a very healthy baby boy at home.

I was induced in january to attempt VBAC - used the gel and then was meant to go on the drip but the delivery ward was full.
Ended up with emergency section with failure to progress but my OB never said I couldnt try.

it was his idea to induce me 2.5 weeks early.

I was told with mine that they would do the foley catheter induction method which is where they expand your cervix with a catheter and then after 12 (or 24, I can't remember which) hours they take the catheter out with the hope that your cervix stays open enough for them to break your waters and set things off that way. Apparently it is 50% successful (as in 50% they are able to pop waters) but I forgot to ask what happens if that fails. I think but don't know for sure that they will not do the gel because the contractions can be too intense and the risk of rupture is too great, but they will give the drip as I nearly ended up having that and they will do stretch and sweeps as well as I was due to have one of those the day after I went into labour.

I can't see why they won't let you go overdue as it would just mean giving you the c/s later if need be. I went 5 days overdue, and I have a friend who went nearly 2 weeks overdue and neither of us where told we couldn't do that (both trying for VBACs)

Thanks ladies, that give me confindence that I'm not being silly putting my foot down when/if the time comes to let me go overdue. I'm happy to see if I can go naturally within 10 days of my edd but of course won't if me or bubs is at risk. So far so good though My MW has said that from 38 weeks she can do a few things to try and get hte ball rolling so to speak. I'm not sure what those 'few things' are but will ask closer to the time.
