Topic: Artisits?? How to make black? Posted: 26 May 2010 at 9:49pm |
So this is actually a food question, but I figure food colouring/paint - works kind of the same
I want to make black sugar (for a road). I feel like I should know the answer to this... I have a packet of little liquid food colouring I used when I made finger paint (red, green. yellow, blue). So how do I make black?
Or is there a such thing as black food colouring??
TIA

I have never been able to make black only dark brown. I am sure you can get black food colouring as I have seen lots of ladybug cakes with black icing spots.

You can get black food colouring. It is best to use the gel colours though, rather than the liquid colouring as you'll get a better black from them.

Haha, I sound like an expert but I'm so not. Have been doing a lot of googling lately for DD's birthday cake

I used the liquid food colouring and got a very dark grey, I'll see if I can find the pic of his cake that i used it on...
Not a close-up, but you get the idea
ETA - I just bought mine from the supermarket, foodtown should have them (or woolowrths/countdown since they have the same stuff/sales)

soak black jelly beans in hot water until all the colour comes away... then remove the (now clear) jelly beans then add your icing sugar as normal. you can get black food colouring from the fresh choice/countdown/woolies chains if you want that instead

Use chocolate icing to start with then add the black. You get a better black that way. Also hunt out the paste colouring. You may need to go to a cake store or specialty cooking store to find the little pottles of colour but they are great. I think they are wilton brand. Or you could try grating licorice to get the road effect. Never tried it just had an idea. Betty crocker do toothpaste sized tubes of black but not sure if you can get them here. Good luck.

Yum!! Grated liquorice (sp?)!! Thanks for all these ideas!
Originally I googled, and it looked like a good idea to have black sugar sprinkles on butter icing to get the road effect, instead of black icing. So I was going to colour sugar, but now I've got lots of things to try. Yay Thank you so much ladies

Where in Auckland are you?
You can get gel food colouring from the Homestores I think. There's one in Milford and I think one in the Rialto complex in Newmarket and one in Sylvia Park.
Also there's Millies in Parnell and Ponsonby.
