Topic: Moving to Perth Posted: 26 May 2010 at 1:14pm |
We are moving to Perth soon (in 1-3 months) and I need to start looking for a place to rent. DH and BIL will be doing a fly-in/fly-out job at a mine in the middle of nowhere but we'll be based in Perth.
Does anyone know what areas of Perth should be avoided? Or which areas are good? I imagine there is only the one airport they would fly from so if it was fairly close to it that'd be great.
I know it'd probably be better to ask on an Aussie forum but I haven't found any that are as easy to use as this one

Depends on what style of life they like & what the budget is.
Do they want to live coastal, do they prefer the country. We were paying $350 a week for a two bedroom duplex in Southern River in the kennel zone. kennel zone is for people with dogs
personally i would not live in Balga, kwinana, Midland, Mirrabooka, Girrawean, Parts of Rockingham, parts of Arimdale, Redcliffe.
The airport is not far from Perth, we were about 20 minutes from their airport in Southern River, Les is in Canning Vale.
Rentals tend to get snapped up quick, if they have a roster that is two weeks on one week off they would be better off closer to the city - Mandurah is an hour from the airport.
Hope this helps somewhat

Great thanks ladies, gives me a good starting point. I'm going to contact a couple of rental agents to see if they can find something for us too.
I think the mine is out in an area called Christmas Creek, which is miles from anywhere

We live in Rockingham, it's pretty nice (although like AandCsmum said, there are some not so nice areas), we are close to the mall and the beach. About 40 mins drive from the airport.
Most rentals in this area seem to be done through property managers. It's a pain to try and organise a place when you aren't here though, they sort of have open homes for rentals for about 15 mins so if you can't go, tough luck!
We are paying $325 for a really big 4brm house in a nice little suburb. Bargain really.
Fremantle is really nice but really expensive to live there!
Kwinana is yuck!
Mandurah is really nice, that's why I like Rockingham, it's kind of between Mandurah and Perth/Fremantle.
I can't find any aussie forums that compare to OB either

I use to live in Subiaco and Wembley and both of those areas were good.
I also had family in Midland and parts of that were rough so I wouldn't live there.
Good luck with the move!

Hi
We made the big shift last month and arrived in Perth on 6 April, since the moment we arrived I was on the hunt for a rental and we finally move into one on Friday - we decided in South Perth prob about 15-20 mins to airport, central but nice and safe for me and DD - and lots of areas to go walking. We are paying $350 for a 2 bed townhouse
It has been an absolute mission - we applied for 4 other properties and were not accepted. You can try liaising with an agent but don't be offended if they don't seem helpful - the properties have open homes at set times and at each one there could be as many as 10 other people - all of which could apply for the same property - it is a very different process to NZ thats for sure!
My husband also has just started in the mines - Area C which is 140km out of Perth - he got home today - it was his first time out and it hasn't been easy but I now have the benefit of him being home for a week.
I have also joined a playgroup - which is only just started and is made up mainly of people from NZ - really good bunch of people, PM me if you would be interested in joining when you get here.
Sorry if I have scared you re the rental issue - before I shifted across my brother warned me how hard it was and I laughed him off - home owners ourselves and really good references from prior but yep still not that easy

Thanks for that Chris, If you don't mind me asking, where were you staying prior to finding the house? I'm thinking I might have to stay back in NZ for a little while longer (we have dogs) and SIL and DH will have to stay in a motorcamp or something.

The best aussie site to use over there to ask for advise is Essential baby
I met quite a few people on that forum and were very helpful.
The airport is fairly close to the city so you will find that any suburb around there will be too expensive for the unsavoury types to live......oh avoid mirrabooka!!!!!!
Link to similar site to OB

I agree with everything that has been said by the other ladies, finding rentals in Perth suck! DH and I moved back from Perth 2 years ago. We were both doing fly in and fly out of Perth too. I know exactly where Christmas Creek is, its a fairly new mine, we worked for 2 years at a mine "just down the road". Good luck with the move.

We stayed in 2 holiday type properties, the first one I arranged online from NZ and when that one ran out I found one online from perth gum tree- highly recommend this site for finding a short term rental - alot cheaper. Unfortunately neither would be suitable for dogs and also both really small - granny flats.
