Topic: Backup photos Posted: 23 April 2010 at 10:19pm |
Not sure if this is the right place to post this or not but just wanted to remind everyone to back up their photos! Just got an email from one of the ladies from my antenatal group...... they got burgled yesterday in broad daylight whilst she was at our antenatal catch up! The thieves took off with her husbands guns, a scanner, 40" Plasma TV etc and 2x laptops. One of which contains pics of their wee girl. She hadn't yet gotten around to backing up the photos so all she has now are the photos she'd put on Facebook.
I feel absolutely terrible for her and her husband. I'd be sooooo upset if I lost all my photos of Isla.
So please please please make sure you make copies of your pics. I'd hate for anyone else to go thru this cause our bubbas grow so fast and photos are essential to capture all the precious memories

DP was so paranoid about our pics of Jude (especially the very early ones) that they are backed up on multiple CDs, Flash Drive, External Hard Drive, laptop and desktop computer..... And also on his parents computer.
Have read somewhere that some people are relying on places like Facebook and Photobucket to store all of their photos - please don't rely on them as your only back ups (besides the fact that they are not as good a quality once you have loaded them onto Facebook), it's not safe!

That same thing happened to us, and I kept meaning to 'get around to backing up' but never did.
Thankfully it was before Keira was born, but I still lost a whole heap of great photos. So now I upload on Snapfish, external hard drive, discs (have one set here and another at my mums) I think if someone will steal your laptop they will definately steal hard drive also.

Ohh, good thinking. I think I'll make that my plan for the week. I'd hate to lose any of our pics

What do people use to back up? I sync our computer with the ipod every few weeks and burn photos to disc. Maybe I should get an external hard drive?

External harddrives are probally the easiest option. You even download a backup program to do it all automatically at a certain time each day/week etc. Just make sure you hide the HD when you are not using it.

I'd do external and CD as my mum used an external as back up and it crashed and she lost heaps of photos too! We have all our photos on multiple computers and on CD as well :)

StaceyL - I'm the same! Isla is only 2 months old today and I have 1700 photos of her already! It's quite ridiculous really! My friends hassle me for the amount of pictures of her I've put on Facebook but in reality, theres barely any ofher on there! Only the REALLY good ones lol

I recommend Google Picasa - free, heaps of storage and all automatically backed up.

Thanks for the reminder. I must get on to backing them up somewhere other than the computer. I am like flake and always get our photos printed before I delete them from the SD card in the camera.
You guys make me feel better as I feel like I'm the only one that has a ridiculous amount of photos of our son. I take my camera everywhere and take photos even at home. DH checks the camera out most nights to check out what we have been up to during the day!
