Hiya,
We are going to Fiji for a family holiday in July - at which point our daughter will be 7 months. We are spending one night on the mainland (Nadi) before heading out to an Island. So will go by taxi I expect to hotels etc. Would I need to take my own carseat?

They won't have car seats in the taxi's or the mini buses... the norm seems to be that you hold them on your lap. We've been twice and I've never seen anyone taking car seats...

Where are you staying in Nadi?

You definitely won't need one on the ferry or on the island..

Yep the norm is holding them unfortunately! Things like that are alot more lax over there.

If she's on the little side she'll probably still fit in a capsule at that age. You could take one if you're worried about it.

I've been so many times before but never thought about it since was pre being a mummy - but I did wonder given the Fiji general relaxed attitude

I don't think I'm comfortable having her on my lap - given the way they drive and the apparent lack of road rules! Might have to see if I can hire a compact-type seat to take. We only have a hire capsule, and she isn't a small baby ;-)

We were wondering the same thing except we are going to Rarotonga. Is it easy to hire a capsule or carseat over there? Or would we have to take one on the plane from NZ to Raro? Or would you just hold your bub on your lap in the taxi? Never been overseas before so have no idea about these things! TIA

They are real lax in Raro as well... so I would guess it would be difficult to hire a carseat over there because I dont think many people use them. You can definitely hold bubs on your lap, if you're comfortable with that. There is really only one main road you will use in Raro that goes around the outside of the island, and the traffic isn't too bad over there, so I would say that would be fine. But again, it's up to you.
Sorry, I have no experience with Fiji, but I know in general they are pretty lax on seatbelts/carseats etc in the islands.

The other thing about even taking your own seat - will they have seatbelts to strap the seat into the car/shuttle bus? We've arrived in Thailand/Malaysia a couple of times to minivans with no seatbelts. I wear Callum in the Ergo on those occasions. I don't like it, but I feel more comfortable doing that (and keeping him still) than the alternative.

We;re off to raro in June and I don't think we'll bother with taking a car seat. I'm not entirely comfortable with that but doubt there will be seatbelts to strap them in, and am not sure about taxis in raro?? When we were there you just got the bus (one goes clockwise around the island, teh other anticlockwise) and I'm pretty sure they don't have seatbelts.
