Just wondering what other people do to minimise the mess?

DD 17 weeks usually has a fair bit of nappy off time on the change mat which I put down on the floor, its been great, just throw the wet cover (i use an old fashioned cloth nappy) in the nappy bucket and mess is all gone. However she is just starting to roll over which means she doesnt stay on the change mat for long!

What can I use down on the floor that isnt going to be too much laundry when she wets it but also is going to protect the carpet while she rolls around? She loves nappy off time so I dont want to stop doing it.

We used a lot of towels....now we just have puddles which we blot up (and thank heavens we didn't put the new carpet in yet) because Jade rolls EVERYWHERE and we can't put towels/cloth nappies etc everywhere.

I used a big square of PUL (from greenbeans) that fitted in under Jakes playpen. Minimised the mess and I could just give it a wipe instead of washing it constantly. I had 2 so when I did need to wash it I could rotate them and I put velcro on them so I could attach them and make a big mat when I wasn't using the playpen.

Oh yeah as Jake got older and began using the potty the PUL went under that to catch any mis-aims (he's always pee'd standing up) then it got used over his sheets during naps incase he had an accident then I could just remove it and the bed was dry for night-time, it got used as a 'picnic' mat for when takeaway nights so the kids didn't make a mess, a mat for when he was playing with bowls of water and now I use it for Tys bare bum time so its multipurpose!

i use an old plastic table cloth from the $2 shop - put a cloth nappy over it - works well, can make it small or big depending on how much she is moving and I just pick up the wet cloth nappies and wash them, wipe the table cloth down with disenfectant :-0

You can buy a special nappy free time round mat that is designed to soak up wee from baby shops. I bought a round one about a metre in diameter that was really good.

Hehe before Chelsea was mobile my mum went to a pet store and bought some dog toilet training mats! So we used those for a while. Now she just crawls around and I follow her with a cloth

I use the Huggies disposable change mats, they are a big square. As long as its not a huge wee you can get a couple of plays out of it...

I use bassinet or sheet mattress protectors - have two, one for nappy bag and one for nappy off time at home - just chuck em in the washing machine when they get peed on.

I think you can get that plastic mat stuff from spotlight. I think people often use it under the high chair to catch all the mess?

I just let DD roam, she onlyhas nappy off time once a day if that for about 20mins. She has only ever pooped once and I was there watching and had wipes right by so caught it in that kinda gross but better then being on the carpet. I figure the carpet can handle it and just chuck a towel on it if she wee's. Its not as bad as coke or something spilling if you ask me and besides the cats pee on the carpet sometimes so whats the difference?

Thanks guys - I got a round vinyl tablecloth from the $2 shop for $3.99 - its 1.8m across so should be big enough to contain everything for a while! When she gets properly mobile I think I will just keep her out of the lounge and in the family room which has wooden floors - probably not great on her knees but its wipe clean!
