 Topic: Dummy Fairy: Your experience please!

Has anyone here done the dummy fairy? DS1 is 2.5 and we have been talking about getting rid of the dummy for the last year but just haven't been motivated enough to do anything and it seems kind of daunting. He only has the dummy at night (although if he had his way he would have it a lot more) but I know it's long past time to get rid of it - I can tell it is affecting his speech and his teeth.
I'm just not sure how to go about it and would be grateful for any shared experiences. As I understand the dummy fairy idea, we explain to him that we are going to leave the dummy in the letterbox or similar and the next day there will be a present in there instead.
We have a few dummies - do you get rid of them all at once? What sort of gift did your fairy leave behind - does it need to be something quite substantial to get the desired result???
Of course any ideas other than dummy fairy would be much appreciated too!

Yes get rid of them all at once! Or you could hang them all on the xmas tree & they turn into presents for xmas day?

We did this, we built up to it over a couple of weeks telling him the fairy would be coming to take it because he was a big boy and the fairy needed to give it to a baby that needed it. We were really surprised that when we did get rid of it he was fine, adjusted no problems right from the start. I think he would have been fine no matter how we approached it. He found a few more as the weeks went by but wasn't interested in using them. I don't think the gift would need to be anything substantial.

DD gave up the dummy just before she turned 4 she was really sick with high temps and didn't want it so made the process so much easier.

It was actually a lot easier to get rid of DD2yrs dummy than I anticipated. A few months back one of her two remaining dummys got a hole in it as she was biting it instead of sucking sometimes, so I showed her the hole and explained it was broken. Told her she had one left, and once that was broken the dummys were all gone. She seemed to understand, and not too long after the last one got a hole in it, and that was the end of that. I read somewhere that a good way to get rid of them is to purposely put a hole in them, as they don't like sucking them once they have a hole, which seemed to be the case with my daughter. Good luck!

Thanks everyone!
Today I was talking to DS1 about how Christmas was coming up. I told him that if he wanted, on Christmas Eve we could put his dummies in his stocking and Santa would take them away and leave presents instead (he loves "presents" no matter what they are!). I asked him if he wanted to give his dummies to Santa and get presents and to my surprise he said yes. DH and I are going to try and have this conversation with him every day between now and Christmas to really commit him to it and I've got an advent calendar so we can count down to when we are going to give the dummies to Santa. Fingers crossed!
@P&E's Mum - I have heard the same. I was told that you snip the end with scissors to make a little slit and then after a few days if they are still sucking on it you snip again at right angles to make a crossshape, and they apparently really don't like it. However I tried it with one of DS1's dummies a while back and he was so distraught I didn't do it again. Maybe he was too young...or too old!

P&E's Mum DD didn't mind if there was a small hole in it just as long she had a dummy otherwise she would given it up months ago.

ohhh we did, and it worked but the only problem is it only worked for one he's still got a couple that I can't get off him. So i'll be trying the dummy fairy again VERY soon.
