Topic: Bleeding for three weeks? Posted: 16 July 2012 at 8:54am |
Hi there, I'm new :-)
Me and my husband are not TTC yet but was hoping some of you may have had similar experiences and may be able to shed some light on my problem... I don't know if this is just a hormonal imbalance, or something to be concerned about.
My last period came 10 days late - I thought I was pregnant (nausea, very sore breasts, emotional, just 'felt' pregnant) but the tests were negative. But then I started spotting for 2 days, then I had extremely heavy (gushing) period for three days - extremely painful (my periods are often quite sore, but not that sore, and not that heavy).
My period seemed to stop for a few days but then I started spotting again. The spotting gradually increased and I had some very bad pains which (at first) I thought were early ovulation pains (at this point I was at 'day 10' of my cycle). But the pains have lasted a week now - they come and go - sometimes it's like really bad period cramps (doubled over in pain) sometimes it's a tight/stabbing feeling on my left side. The spotting has now increased to being like a dripping tap. So right now, I am at 'day 18' of my cycle.
Before now, my periods were very regular and always 28 days apart - would always last 5 days. I have had a copper IUD for 1 year with no problems. I would appreciate any feedback... thanks so much :-)

Hi nzk88, I really put off going to the doc because it is expensive etc but sometimes it is really good to go even if for piece of mind. A good friend recently had an eptopic pregnancy and it was very serious, if you just visit the doc then you can cross anything bad off the list. All the best and hope you get an answer

Hello, thanks for replying because I'm getting quite scared. Just not feeling right - quite dizzy and black rings under my eyes now, the bleeding has got heavier. I'm feeling very shaky and weepy. But I'm supposed to be working - so am going to the doctor after work.
I will let you know what happens - it may be useful for others if this happens to them in future.

hi nzk88 - definitely go to the doctors! hope your afternoon goes okay. as far as i'm aware, any appointment made that is related to possible pregnancy is free anyway - so you have nothing to lose but everything to gain. hope the afternoon goes by quickly and you get some answers soon.

Definitely go to the Dr, I may be wrong but I always thought ectopics don't always show up as positive preg tests?
My last miscarriage I "retained product" and my bleeding was very similar to what you are describing. I also had severe pain like contractions as bits of tissue and blood clots passed through the cervix. (sorry if that's tmi!) It didn't stop til I went to my ob/gyn who put me on a "chemical" (provera for two weeks) d&c to clear the dead tissue out (baby was gone but the placenta had grown in through my c-sect scar -placenta accreta).
Perhaps say to your doctor you thought you may have been pregnant but now the bleeding won't stop, emphasise the side pain and gush-iness, s/he's more likely to request an investigative ultrasound than if you say the preg tests were negative. Then when you go for the ultrasound make sure the sonographer thoroughly checks both fallopian tubes (they won't always for suspected mc, they'll just check your uterus).
Hope everything goes well for you and you get this issue resolved, you need to look after yourself.

Thanks for replying - nice to have some good advice because no one else has been taking me seriously! I know it sounds strange, but we weren't planning on getting pregnant - but then I had the pregnancy symptoms and it's almost like I could feel it. Suddenly, I had this strong maternal urge - I felt like I was floating, like I was in love, and I really wanted the 'baby' that I was so sure was was there. But then, suddenly (when the bleeding started, around the same time my breasts stopped hurting) it's like I felt a life drain out of me. I felt so sad - funny right, considering I never wanted to be pregnant?
I kept saying something wasn't right but the Doctors just disregard me because the tests were negative. And my husband/friends just give me the 'drama queen' look! But who knows - hopefully the doctor will be thorough. Thanks for your advice and I'll be sure to mention these things to the Doctor :-)

I agree, get to the Dr. Did u have a pregnancy blood test for hormone levels? Sound to me like it could be a misscarriage/eptopic too. Bleeding can come and go like that and be very severe like the others have said.
With the symptoms of dizzniess and everything else u have I would leave work asap and get to the dr. I hope u get answers soon.

Hey all :-) Thanks so much for your concern. This whole time I've been feeling really embarrassed, like I've done something wrong. Doesn't help that hubby is the strong silent type - emphasis on 'silent'! Nice to have the support :-)
I went to the doctor after work (I work from home, and hubby had the car so had to wait for him) and they told me to go straight to the hospital. There they did some examinations and took blood tests, but couldn't do an ultrasound until morning so sent me home for the night with some medication. I went back this morning for an ultrasound and more tests. The ultrasound showed nothing bad but they said it could be similar to your situation, tictacjunkie, and I had retained some stuff. They said there is risk of infection so have given me antibiotics, Provera and some painkillers, and asked me to come back in a week or sooner if I don't feel well. They were a bit vague though, so I can't really confirm what happened.
It's all a bit surreal though and yesterday feels a bit like I dreamt it! I went to the hospital book store and for some reason came out with a book I already own. La-la! xo

If they've given you a say 2 week course of Provera it should stop the bleeding fairly quickly, you don't bleed while you're taking it, then when you stop the provera the bleeding will start again, but hopefully this time it will get rid of everything, and you should go back to "normal". My ob said it's like "resetting" it.
Hopefully they did tell you that, but all to often it is just younger staff getting the info off senior staff and they don't always pass on/ understand the full story.
Best wishes to you, I hope you feel mended again soon. My bleeding after the provera course was heavy-ish and quite "chunky" for lack of a better word, but it only lasted slightly longer than a normal period.
Then I got preg again a few weeks later and she's now 20mths, .

Hey guys :-) I've been taking the Provera since Monday night but the bleeding is still quite heavy. Sorry for TMI but it's golden-syrup like and settles at the bottom of the toilet. I don't know of that's OK or not. I also keep crying but don't know if thats hormonal or just me!
I also think whatever I've been through is nothing compared to you all - and I have a huge amount of empathy for anyone TTC or struggling with fertility xo

It can take a couple of days to get into your system for some people. And the mucus-y golden syrup stuff is what I had after I started taking it too, it went almost clear before it went completely, just the hormones changing again. If you're still bleeding by Friday I'd go see someone then.
And yeah, stupid hormones are probably to blame for the teariness too!
