I'm at home all day with my 13 month old daughter I work in the late afternoon every second week but I'm mainly at home. I find friends with babies around the same age are doing more things at daycare so I'm just wondering what activities your kids do at daycare and also any ideas we could do at home. We read alot and we go to wriggle and rhyme once a week and swimming lessons on a sunday with dad, but is there anything else we could do that is fun and will help with her development and education?

Have you looked at a local Playgroup? Plunket have them all over and it is like daycare with all the facilities but you stay with them and it's free (or gold coin donation). Our one is awesome; has a playground, sandpit, water table (nice days), ride on toys, indoor area for toys, dress ups, kitchen and baby play, under 2's area, crafts and painting/playdough area. And tea and coffee for mums and you get to meet local mums with kids similar age.

The great thing about playgroup is that they can see what other kids are doing, play with a huge range of things, make all the mess there and then you go home to your own house. Usually everyone helps tidy up at the end. Your local Plunket will be able to put you onto one near you. They are usually on in the morning times and days vary.

Can you tell i love Playgroup?! There is no commitment, you just go when you want and don't go when you don't want. Don't have to be there on time, or stay the whole time. Our one in Mangere Bridge rocks so you are welcome to come there if no local ones to you.

There is Mainly Music which is usually run at the big churches - normally there is a small fee $3-4 to cover costs. There are several in your area.

We also love playgroup here. Lots of activities and different children of varying ages to play with.

I did look into playgroup theres one just down the road from me. The only thing that put me off was that we had to be there by 9 and couldn't leave til 12 at the time Caitlyn was about 8-9 months and didn't wake from her morning nap til 10ish. It did sound really great but even now Caitlyn goes to bed at about 10.30 and wakes up at 12.30 so wouldn't really suit that time either. But maybe I might look around for another playgroup. I'm in Takanini, do you have a few under 2's at your playgroup?

We have lots of different ages, from newborns to 5. Majority of kids from 18 months to 3.

We run it casually because we all understand that it is hard to come for a fixed period when the kids are little and it goes against the purpose of it being a friendly relaxed place for parents to come. I used to go to a PG like that, where you had jobs and couldn't leave till you had done it right at the end. I used to get stressed out with the kids desperate for their lunch and bed and me stuck there vacumming. It just stopped being enjoyable and so i stopped going.

We always just advise mums/dads to stay as long as they want, don't stress about not staying for pack up if child needs to be in bed/appt etc. Everyone's turn comes later when their child is older. It's not much bother for a couple to do the pack up. Because that is the atmosphere people really do make the effort to chip in where they can and don't end up resenting it.

Each playgroup is run differently so try a few and see which you click with. Some churches run them too. Sorry i don't know more about your area, but just phone your local Plunket nurse and they will tell you.

we go to playcentre - there's no strict rules on when we have to be there, and if you've got a little one that needs an earlier sleep, usually it's ok to leave early. WE just do a bit of tidying up somewhere before we go. there's quite a few young kids at our playcentre (like, virtually newborn babies with older siblings!)

At home - water play is easy, we use her old babybath as a little splash pool. Playdo on rainy days. Slime is really fun but is an outdoors game really. drawing with crayons. Reading books. block towers. walks around the garden looking at plants and birds and insects... amazing how much time that can take up! playdates with other kids, playground visits on nice days... sand - even if you don't have a sandpit, just some small container with sand that they can pour and touch.

I know you can feel like you're running out of ideas sometimes!

My DS is likely to be an only child for a while as we don't plan to have another baby for a few years, so its important to me that he goes to activities to spend time with other children. I have tried a few things and found my local playgroup and mainly music to be best, two different types of things, both with boys and girls of his own age. Mainly music is awesome because they get the music portion then the play portion as well. If we aren't feeling like going to a full on activity I sometimes take him to play at the park or beach and there are usually other toddlers there anyway so he gets that interaction. Or even at the mall there are things to play on as well as interacting with shopkeepers etc. So I think choose one or two activities you go to, I find it best when they are casual so we dont have to go if something crops up and dont need to feel bad. And just take her anywhere, they love to go out :)

Also with our playgroup it runs from 9-11:30 but we don't have to stay a fixed time, so often we arrive about 10 as Im not organised enough to get there at 9 often hehe have a look around and Im sure you'll find a more flexible playgroup

You can get really cheap passes to Kelly Tarltons for something fun - this one is weekdays only, and is only $50 for a year (under 3's are free)
Off Peak Pass

And you can get zoo passes too, we have both.

Sorry, just read clearer!

At home can be a struggle, esp at 13 months when they are not quite old enough for a lot of activities.

In the summer we do a lot of water play - sit the baby in front of a tray of water with some cups etc, and let them go for it!

Another recommendation for Mainly Music here - we have been going since Toby was 1. Lots of fun, you get to meet other families in your area and low cost. Don't be put off by the fact that it's run by a church if you aren't religious or are of a different religion - we aren't religious at all and it doesn't matter. There are one or two religious references in a couple of the songs (I'm glad God made me etc) but nothing major.

I know it sounds kind of lame but DS used to really like mundane things like supermarket shopping or going on a trip to the Warehouse for a ride in the trolley - you can kill a lot of time doing things like that which are free depending on whether you can control the urge to impulse buy!

Also Rock & Rhyme at the Public Library is good (and free). We've been going there since Toby was 6 months old. It gets really full in our area though so it pays to arrive early.

Good luck!
