My DD is having her tonsils and adenoids out this coming Tuesday and will be admitted overnight. I am just thinking about what to pack and just was wondering if anyone could suggest something to keep her occupied.

She is going in at 12.30pm and is first on the list for theatre. Op is about an hour so she should be out by 2pm I'm guessing? But will be in recovery for half an hour or so then transferred up to the ward and she should be discharged about 9am the next day. I'm not sure whether she will feel like doing much later on in the afternoon and she will be in a 4 bed room, most likely with older kids. I have some books and a new toy (mini doll and ambulance), plus her PJs, teddy, toiletries...anything else I should take or that might be good for her to do lying in bed?

Im sure Tauranga hospital kids ward is much flasher(cant think of a better word) than Gizzy kids ward- and they have a play room, play specialist and tv's in the rooms here, so I wouldnt worry about taking too much else- I would take a colouring book or blank scrapbook and some felts cos DD loves those and they dont take up much room and can occupy her for ages.
When DD had minor surgery at starship last Jan-she was 4, they had really cool story posters with photos and simple story explaining what would take place before and after surgery, like being weighed, measured etc. The play therapist then saw here and she played with the oxygen masks etc so she was confident and happy as when we actually went into the theatre.
DS had minor eye surgery here in April last year but he was just 15 months.
The worst parts were not being able to eat and drink- If shes having surgery in afternoon Im guessing shes allowed an early breakfast? If the letter and instructions are vague- ring the ward and check cos being nil by mouth from the night before til the afternoon is gonna be mega hard on a little kid.
If u can, take another adult with u too, so u can take turns distracting her cos there is a lot of waiting about, and it gives u a chance to go eat etc without doing it in front of DD.

It was truely horrible seeing her being put under the anethetic- you are allowed to hold them until they are asleep, but when they give them the gas in the mask thing they can shake, fight, then go floppy and they get this horrible blank freaked out kind of stare in their eyes, then they lie them down and u have to leave. That part is heart breaking.

Hope it goes well for both of u, and I hope some of that helps!

Thanks for that Kellz. Yeah I am a bit worried about her being nil by mouth but thankfully its only from 7am till her op in the early afternoon. I'm a single mum so I'm not sure how I'm going to manage eating my lunch without her getting upset about not eating but hopefully she should be ok.
She has now met the play therapist and the lady was lovely and has shown her around so that's given me a much better idea of what to expect.
Thanks for the info
