My family is relatively new in NZ and back where were from, babies as seen by paediatricians for routine wellnes checkups. Ive noticed that its not usual here because well babies are either seen by plunket nurses or GPs and I heard that we need referals to see a paediatrician.

I am aware that I can go to them privately but Im not sure if I can find a wellington paed willing to see my baby. Im curious if does any body here go to paeds for their babies for routine wellness checks? Any recommendation? I cant seem to find contact details for private clinic in the internet. How much is the usual rate for paeds these days?

Thanks in advance

I think it may be difficult to find a paediatrician, as I'm not sure if there are many working in private clinics. You may need to talk to your GP to see if they can recommend someone; they may have some contacts they can put you in touch with.

It looks like its around the $200 mark to see a paediatrician privately. However I'm not sure how you go about this, as you really only see a paediatrician here if there is an issue.
I know that in America you see a paediatrician, not a GP. I worked with a dr who was a registrar that was going back home to usa to be a paediatrician, but in nz, they wouldn't be one, as they hadn't done enough training. So what I'm saying is a GP will have done similar training. If you have further health issues then they would refer you on if needed.

No you're not alone in wanting to see a paediatrician for a wellness check - Dr Hashard Patel does wellness checks for babies under 6 weeks old. He's in Courtenay Place. It pays to get a referral through your GP as then he'll have all your background notes. Your GP will have his contact details, or check the White Pages.

We're with Dr Vaughan Richardson, who I recommend, he's in the same building as Dr Patel but it may take longer to get an appointment, we saw him for reflux and allergy issues.

Thanks for all your replies. Really appreciate it.

My bub was seen by Dr. Patel when he was 6 weeks old when we were referred by our midwife for a free routine check. I did manage to find his number in the plunket book that he signed but I am unsure if the paeds here do accept wellness check for babies (he is now 7 months old).

Well, actually I need to have him checked for his constipation too. He was prescribed drops but that doesnt seem to work. He's been taking less milk (around 500-600 mls a day) and doesnt like solids or taking water. So my concern is that he might be losing weight. I know the routine is to got to the GP first but I will feel less anxious if a paediatrician see him. I feel that GPs sometimes dismiss some stuff easily. I've heard 'that's normal...', 'he'll grow out of it...', 'its just a phase...' too many times and its no consolation for a first time mom.

Anyway, I tried calling Dr. Patel/Richardson and was directed to a voice mail. I hope they get back to me soon. In the meantime, I set an appointment with his GP.
Im just hoping its not this hard for us to privately get peadiatricians here :( Especially for wellness check. maybe its just me but I find comfort when I know that my baby is seen by someone who really specializes in babies.

Hi Kazzle!

That's great. So does your baby see him for regular checkups? I tried calling his number. Looks like his a very busy man and is fully booked way in advanced. But I'll definitely give it another try.

Hope we can get a slot.

Cheers.

yeah we see him regularly, due to food allergies etc. (although i dont need to see him now, unless im really worried about something)

he is normally booked about 1-2 mths ahead...he is only in town on a wednesday, in mana once a month...if you to book at mana you need to ring them there

2330805 (mana specialist centre)

and he will see you...bascially cos you will be going private...if you are willing to pay their fees they will see you.

Hes not a bad pead...but is slow at getting some things done...but other than that we have had no problems with him
