Topic: Breast feeding and no period Posted: 17 March 2011 at 6:50pm |
Do many women get no period whilst breastfeeding? My baby is 3 months and I have not yet had a period....is this regular for alot of women? or only a lucky few.

It is very common, my bubs is 8 months and still no period. Also know people with babies over 1 that haven't had them back yet either. Am enjoying it while it lasts!

Yep - I went almost to dd's first birthday without one! Only had one and am now pregnant with number two. Hope I last that long again without one!

Enjoy!

13 months old here and still no period!
ETA: We're still BFing round the clock so that could be why.

Prolactin (the milk-producing hormone) suppresses the hormones that are responsible for the normal functions of the ovaries, so that means no periods. I have only known of a few women who got their periods back within the first few months. Most who are breastfeeding don't have periods for some time (or until they stop breastfeeding). It is normal and expected (it's also okay to get it back sooner; everyone's different).

Yip, same here. DS is 13 months and b/f and still no period. He only feeds three times a day and not overnight so I must say I am a bit surprised. But certainly not complaining!

I got mine back the week after I fully weaned DD at 11.5 months. I thought it might take a while to come back, but there it was the very next week (I weaned very gradually though - only feeding once or twice a day for a last few weeks).

*Sigh* I wish mine had of stayed away! I got mine back at 3 mth, 4mth & 3mth respectively and they were all fully BF. They were all sleeping through the night about 3-4 weeks prior though, so I guess that may have been why?

I got mine back when Jack was about 11mths but he was hardly feeding then. I finally weaned Ben at 16mths and got AF back about 4wks later

Like others have said, totally normal. DD is almost 13 months old and we stopped BFing 2weeks ago and still nothing. GP told me it normally comes back 6wks after ceasing BFing. Not looking forward to it tbh lol, been great not having it!!!

It's amazing how different we all are. I got my period back when DS was 3 months old - despite being breastfed day and night on demand (a lot!).
My mum never got her period back until she had fully weaned us. With my sister that meant 3 years! So I was very surprised to find I was the complete opposite to her.

Mine came back with each of them 2 weeks after I dropped down to one BF/day -- so 10ish months with both.
