Well unless people having been living under a rock shouldn't they already know this? haven't there been like a million tv shows and other news articles telling us that processed food is full of crap. I'm constantly amazed that people still don't get it.

Last time I was pregnant I had gestational diabetes. I did heaps of reasearch into cerel options, the best by far were weetbix and porridge. I don't give DD anything else.
It always cracks me up seeing that Nutrigrain add on TV, ironman food indeed!

that came across as a bit harsh cuppatea!
i think its good to be reminded every now and then. doing the grocery shop can be stressful sometimes when you are trying to budget and juggling the kids you dont always have time or remember to check labels.

I know what you mean, Bizzy! I haven't got to the point where I'm buying for J yet, but just shopping for ourselves I often just toss things in with the assumption they're healthyish. I'm sure it's just the same for a busy Mum.

Especially when the kids cereals have exciting toys inside them.
Its the same with 'healthy' cereals targeted at women Special K is one in particular that is loaded with sugar and fat that gets promoted as being healthy.
Weetbix in summer porridge in winter is what we have here, probably get rice bubbles once DD is old enough for it.

Totally agree Cuppa, but I think they don't think about it, I never used to, as long as it was yummy that was all that mattered to me, I guess that was also the joys of being DINKs
It wasn't til we started needing to be more aware of what went into DH's diet that we started realising jsut the sheer amount of crap that goes into cereals.
Porridge, home-made toast with home-made jam or rice bubbles, pancakes/waffles or if DH is cooking bacon & eggs is the standard fare in our house.
Bizzy, re stressful shopping, I know that I don't buy other "fancy" stuff, so I look at the cheapest of the items that I buy, ie cheapest ricies, cheapest porridge. It's easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer amount available so if you think, ok no fancy stuff then it's much easier to focus.

I used to buy the cheapest cornflakes which ever was on special then Dh complained they tasted awful stick with Skippy now.
With Porridge I do like the sachets I know they're more expensive I like the different flavours.

Totally agree, and I dont think its harsh, wasnt directed at anyone in particular, cuppatea tends to tell it like it is
Luckily the things that seem to be the best options are the cheapest!
But then its whatever you are comfy with, I dont mind my kids having a bit of sugar, Im more concerned if things have loads of salt and saturated fats and extra colouring etc
mmm I love those porridge sachets! especially the one they dotn have anymore with the maple syrup

Totally agree Cuppa
My other HUGE pet hate with cereals is how much they show as a servings size in the adverts, when in reality, it's a teeny tiny bowl.
Me & the boy have porridge. It's cheap, wonderfully nutritious, and you can have as much as you like without feeling guilty

It doesn't need to be stressful though, you don't need to check every packet everytime you go shopping, you just learn what is ok and what is not and keep to buying the things you know are ok and then you only need to check the new things you think look appealing.
Weetbix, porridge or toast is all the kids ever have, or sometimes they want my puffed millet but I don't like to share that as it's a bit expensive and the only gluten free thing I have to eat in the morning. I chuck a few sultanas in with the porridge or cut up some banana sometimes but mostly they just eat it plain and they've never complained cos they don't know any different. Lots of the cereals, even the porridge sachets, that have dried fruit etc are full of other crap so we avoid them.
My label checking is easy, first I quickly scan the ingredients and if there are any numbers in there they go back on the shelf, cos as far as I'm concerned numbers aren't food. So that rules out pretty much 98% of the supermarket. If there are no numbers then I have to check for nuts, and then I check the other ingredients, so probably only 0.2% of what a supermarket sells would ever make it into my trolley. So much easier when I go to the organic shop!

jeez am i the only mum who knows they're bad and still feeds them to the kids. Don't assume parents are ignorant because we allow our kids to eat a range of cereals. We know it's bad for them haha. And still let them have it sometimes. Just like chips, lollies, juice, fish'n'chips etc.
And out of all my friends i'm one of the healthiest when it comes to what my kids eat.

nope I would say plenty know and still choose to eat them, give them to their kids, and that's fine, my kids get the occassional treat that I know isn't the best thing for them and I eat things I know are bad for me now and then. It was the need for another article explaining it that I was getting at, because I think by now everyone should know and their shouldn't need to be another article telling people.

Those ads crack me up too... they might have your daily intake of iron & whatever else in them, but about a weeks worth of sugar and crap!
We stick to weetbix, porridge & toast (although that has peanut butter on it!).
I'm pretty sure when DS goes to MILs for the night she gives him crap cereal, cheerios or cocoa pops, but once in a while is ok.
I LOVE cocoa pops, but don't like having double standards.

I like the way my Mum does it with my younger brothers and sisters - during school time, they have a very limited range of healthy breakfast options. In the holidays, they can choose a box of rubbishy stuff, and eat that till it's gone.
