Hiya

I'm keen to transition Little Mr Fidget to his gogo bag as he's into the stage of kicking his legs out of his wrap and then kicking all the blankets down to the foot of his bed.

The only thing holding me back is we've just started to leave one arm out when he's wrapped at night and moving to the gogo bag will mean both arms out - he's a bit like Bridget Jones on that magic mushroom omelette; looking at him you would think there's a trail of sparkly stars following his arm when he waves it around before eventually drifting off to sleep. Has anyone used a gogo bag and wrap at the same time? Or does he need to adjust to complete arm freedom before we start using the bag?

Second question is we live in Canterbury and I saw on the Merino Kids website apparently extra blankets aren't needed once they're in a bag. I would think though that South Island winters being what they are would mean he would need a wool blanket as the weather got colder. (It's a standard weight bag). What have other SI mums done?

Thanks!

Hey - I'm further south! I use gogo bag + blankets on top. I actually still wrap too as DD(6 months) has eczema so it stops her scratching. I just wrap her arms and leave her legs out. I use this method to wrap her, but fold the bottom muslin into a big triangle.
I think it'd be easy to just wrap one arm using this method and carry on what you are doing :-)

I would continue wrapping one arm for a while then try both out. My DD stopped being wrapped at a couple of weeks old, and in her GoGo bag from about 4 months. We have a summer weight bag, and in winter I had a sheet with light wool and cotton blankets as well, I just have nice thin ones so I can do smaller layers rather than a big thick one. It depends on how warm your babys room is as well, its better to have too less blankets than to much

Hahaha, that picture made me crack up, Jacob is JUST the same. He'll hold his hands at arms length, as it were, and move them round and round, with eyes following the whole time.

We use a sleeping bag (not a gogo bag, but pretty much the same, I'm sure) and a wrap at the same time. I put the bag on first, and the wrap on second.

I used to use the sleeping bag and wrap- just swaddled over the top.

Check out this link from the sleepstore for more info sleeping_bag_and_wrapping

I use the gogo bag and wrap over the top. I'm in christchurch and unless it's one of those crazy hot nights we've had, Luca gets a sheet and wool aircell blanket over top.

Later on, once arms are sorted you can get winter/duvet weight Go Go bags which you may not need extra bedding for...depending on the temperature in the room and clothing/pjs underneath.

See the temperature chart about halfway down this page - http://www.merinokids.co.nz/FAQ.html

We're in Wellington and throughout winter I used a sleep bag (standard weight) and a cotton wrap at the same time, + a heater (room was about 21 degrees) a cotton singlet, bodysuit and aio... (Probably over dressed her but it was quite cold!)

She wean from her wrap in spring and now we just have her in a bodysuit or aio + nappy (no singlet) and her sleeping bag. No blankets. She gets too hot plus kicks them off. She likes to stick one leg out the carseat belt hole iygwim too.

For a while, I just used a muzzie cloth swaddled around Jackson while he was in his sleeping bag. I also used the safety sleep for a while as well.

Jackson had some little merino PJs under his sleeping bag, and in winter we had an oil heater with a thermostat to keep the room warm. So we didn't use extra blankets and still don't to this day (Jackson is still in a sleeping bag now). However, I am pretty sure lots of people have used blankets over top without issues.

I'm in CHCH and we used just the winter weight Gogo bags for the girls when they were wee. We used to have them in a singlet with a thermal top and tights underneath as well as a small oil heater in their room :)

I am more south than you - use gogo bag with a merino swaddle to hold the arms over the top (just the arms secured under the bum) - and a woolly blanket over top.

We used a wrap & a bag when DS was younger. We used a Miracle wrap (just the bit for the arms) wrapped over his arms whilst he was in a Gogo bag. We then went cold turkey and stopped using the wrap - some find they need to transition slowly by taking one arm out for awhile, then both, but we didn't end up needing to.

Thanks everyone - it's awesome to have such a wealth of knowledge on tap!

LilNic, I love the mental image of a leg appearing out the carseat hole. I can just imagine that will happen here as well once his legs grow a bit longer!

We lived in Dunedin and had a winter newborn. We wrapped and then put Jude in the Go Go Bag (rather than the other way around). Blankets went on top (Go Go Bag was standard weight) - especially if it was a really cold night. As we were renting - our houses were very cold despite having heatpumps and heaters

Lol Alice my DD does the same, then she whacks herself in the face ... We live in Auckland so its been pretty hot so I just have her in a 0.5 tog bag and tuck one arm down beside her and 'wrap' it tight in next to her with the safety sleep, no other blankets at the moment, but come winter I will use a bag and blankets....
