I'm trying to figure out how long DS can be in his car seat while we're travelling this Xmas.

I've spoken to two Plunket nurses, one said 3 hours, one said 1.5 then a min 45min break!

What have you heard?

Hmmm we have tried so far to only travel when he naps, so the maximum is about 2 1/2 - 3 hours. If he is awake, he needs more breaks but that is mainly due to boredom :-)

I watched on good morning the other day and the lady on there the baby whisperer said to keep to their normal routine when it comes to feeding. so when baby is due for a feed pull over to a safe spot and give baby a feed.

I do think 45 minute rest break is a bit excessive. when DD was little and we went to visit our parents we would stop long enough to feed her change her nappy and stretch our legs so around 15-20 minutes

Lily was 4 months on our first trip and we were told 2 hours is fine and then a 30 min break and then 2 hours... etc.

ETA: We kept to routine though and she normally did 2 hour sleeps and we stopped and had something to eat as well so that was our 30 mins.

I think it does pay though as one of my coffee group mum let her oldest stay in the carseat way too much and she had shoulder/neck problems from being slumped over asleep.

One of the nurses at the hospital told us 1.5 hours in the carseat at a time - then they need to stretch out to keep their airway clear

Would it work to stick to his routine so while he is asleep you drive but if he wakes you either take a break if he feeds when he wakes or you keep going until you get to the nearest town/rest stop and have a stretch etc... ?

We were told 1.5-2 hours then a 20-30 minute break. Also means you get a break from driving, and dont have to worry about stupid campervans for a bit! lol

well we went to palmy from auckland and it took us about 7 or 8 hours, and we stopped about....4 times I think, bella was 10 months then., and she pretty much slept most of the way!

ETA - one stop was for lunch, so we stopped for about 45 mins and the other stops were for loo breaks/snacks etc so only 10 or 15 mins.

I did the trip from Wellington to Christchurch when DS was 6 weeks old... tried to keep him out of the capsule as much as possible while on the 3 hr ferry crossing, then it was drive for as long as he would let us which meant stopping at Kaikoura for a feed and change etc... then got to Christchurch just as he was starting to fuss again (he pretty much slept the whole time in the car).

But in saying this, I later took him to a Chiropractor and he had a couple of issues with his neck and pelvis and I now believe I should have included at least one other stop along the way for a 'stretch'.

Thanks all, surprisingly the dilema has been sorted! My dad decided he didn't like the idea of us all driving, so has paid for us all to fly!!
